Recyclable wrapping paper

As I’ve recently discovered that most wrapping paper is not recyclable, I want to move to kraft style paper. Difficulty is confirming that kraft paper sold as wrapping paper is recyclable - link for hobbycraft below. What do we think?

Check your local council website. Ours recycles most wrapping paper as long as it can be torn ie not foil plastic type.

I bought one from the range, similar to yours there, and it says it is recyclable and recycled. Our council recycles all paper and card etc unless like above it’s shiny or plasticky.

Interesting. Our council doesn’t say anything but I thought I’d read that the plasticky cover on all wrapping paper (even that you can tear) renders it non-recyclable. Hopefully this one will do. Don’t have a Range near us so will pop into hobbycraft and take a closer look!

You just need to avoid plasticky paper or ones covered in glitter. As long as it scrunches and holds the shape when scrunched it can be recycled.

I got some lovely red kraft paper from Ikea with some candy cane type string for my wrapping this year.

Yes - if it's shiny or glittery it can't be recycled but if it tears like normal paper it can be (into low grade stuff, so composting is another option). If it says 'gift wrap' it may well be plastic.

Lidl and IKEA and M&S usually have good stiff paper that makes wrapping easy (another reason to avoid plastic ones)

Hello,
All wrapping paper sold by www.bethekeeper.co.uk is 100% recycled, made entirely in the UK using non bleached consumer waste pulp. It's also non coated so totally recyclable, there's not a lot of Christmas designs but they are beautiful, hope that helps. W x

I have got two big rolls of brown paper from amazon which claim to be recyclable. My friend who is a sustainability officer told me it should be fine as long as it’s not shiny (it’s not). I have some stamps and ink and pretty ribbons to glam it up.

Lazybonita Last year I used brown paper with the red and white twist string that you can get. It looked lovely.

This symbol on wrapping paper means it’s paper/plastic blend and can’t be recycled. This was from Lidl last year (Code 81)

This link has the full list of all recycling codes even for paper/card.

Depending on who you are giving to, reusable is better than recyclable. In my family we bought a couple of metres of gold, red and green crushed velvet. We cut it into various sized pieces and wrap all our gifts in them and tie with contrasting ribbons. They look beautiful and festive under the tree. And after opening them on Christmas day, we fold up the material and save it for next year.

Thanks all - going on a hunt tomorrow for some which has been recycled already. Trying to be more conscious of this all but it is such a minefield!

I've bought brown paper for friends presents though I worry they won't recycle it.
For family presents the same gift bags have been doing the rounds for many years
