Firstly, apologies for having loads of Q's on this board. I am nearly done and will leave you all in peace.

We are planning on having a relaxed buffet on Boxing Day. I don't know what though! What goes on yours?

So far I think it will be:

Turkey breast slices (we are not having Turkey on Christmas Day)
Pigs in Blankets
Left over desserts from Christmas Day
Sausage rolls

TrickyD · 26/11/2018 13:20

Well, prawn vol au vents won't be part of our buffet, because JusRoll only supply the cocktail size to wholesalers like Booker. I discovered this after fruitless searches in Tesco, Waitrose and Iceland by phoning Jusroll. And yes I could mess about making them myself, and yes the party size are available, but I like trouble free small ones. All very annoying.

ChubbyMummy12 · 26/11/2018 13:23

nickievans1987 · 26/11/2018 16:30

We do a buffet on boxing day too. Ours will have:
Leftover turkey and gammon (hopefully)
Cheese and crackers
Pate
Breads
Salad
Smoked salmon
Prawns in marie rose sauce
Baked camembert with roasted new potatoes (because I'm pregnant and can't have camembert unless cooked 😭)
A couple of packs of some kind of party food I'll find nearer the time

Also just thought I should possibly get some crisps and nuts too...

When did Boxing Day buffets become a thing? We've never had one! Boxing Day is selection boxes and left over turkey and mince pies.

Our family had Boxing Day buffets when I was growing up in the early 70s - I don't think they're a new thing. I guess you would only go to the bother of doing much more than putting out leftovers, cheese and chocolate if you are hosting guests, though.

Much as I like Christmas Dinner, it's the Boxing Day Buffet I look forward to the most! And I like to include a lot of the 70s favourites - vol au vents, cheese and pineapple hedgehog, sherry trifle etc.

swapsicles · 26/11/2018 16:53

Hopefully leftovers otherwise I'm going to the pub!
Got to work at 6am til about 3/4 and probably no break as it's bound to be busy. The joys of retail!
Can't you lot stay at home? 😊

MeVoila · 26/11/2018 16:55

Always home made coleslaw with the turkey.
Also we like grated carrot and cashew salad.

fromtheshires · 26/11/2018 17:46

I never knew the buffet was a thing either. I have always had a sit down roast on both Christmas and Boxing day! The only leftovers we eat on Boxing day was meat from Christmas day and the desserts we never managed to get through on Christmas day.

Perhaps its just both sides of my family are incredibly small so its always been done this way. My parents visted each set of grandparents for a meal on one of the days (alternated each year) and I guess its carried on into my brother and I as well.

For larger families or blended families this will probably be an unrealistic approach.

SilkenTofu · 26/11/2018 17:50

It is not so much a flashy buffet. It is more to use up leftovers and add a few bits in. There isn't gong to be any pomp and ceremony. We will be in our chill out gear, watching movies with a buffet to graze all day alongside the 10 million boxes of chocs we have. No guests.

This is how we want to spend our Boxing Day.

We have a big Boxing Day buffet as we don't see family on Christmas Day. Each to there own Smile

Arrowfanatic · 26/11/2018 19:20

Left over Turkey

And every box of bung it in the oven frozen party food that Tesco sells.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 26/11/2018 19:46

I'm cooking a beef roast dinner on boxing day but we are having a buffet Xmas eve.
King Prawns
Smoked Salmon
Salad
Crackers
Cheeses
Pate

Notso · 26/11/2018 20:53

Shamelessly lurking for ideas, we usually have turkey and ham pie on Boxing Day but not eating Christmas Dinner at home this year so not cooking turkey or ham.

VictoriaBun · 26/11/2018 20:57

Cheeses, pickles, chutneys, nice breads or crackers. A few M&S buffet selection chuck in the oven thingies. all evening long

shamalawa · 26/11/2018 21:47

Boxing Day - my favourite day!!!

We will have

Cold meat
Smoked salmon
Cream cheese
Cornichons
Silverskins
Homemade Coleslaw
Tomato salad
beetroot goats cheese salad
Pickles
Green Salad
Potatoes - wedges?
Mac n cheese
Homebread bread
Baked Camembert
Pate
Sweetcorn salad

Yule log
Mango passion fruit pavlova

That's my list so far but am sure I'll add to it!

OneStepMoreFun · 26/11/2018 22:21

@mrsm43s is right. A Boxing Day buffet has to have a bit of a seventies vibe about it. That's why I always do old fashioned potato salad in mayo with chives and spring onions. And Carr's water biscuits with Stilton, none of your hipster seedy wafers.
Just remembered the sherry trifle too.

CherryPavlova · 26/11/2018 22:28

I do Boxing Day drinks with canapés rather than a buffet.

Smoked salmon blini with wasabi mayonnaise
Homemade guacamole blinis topped with a chilli prawn
Mushroom vol au vents
Blue cheese and walnut Choux puffs
Cheddar and fig chutney mini scones
Sticky mini sausages
Christmas dinner tian
Roasted vegetable skewers
Arancini
Chicken satay skewers
Stuffed baby tomatoes
Figs, honey and goats cheese wrapped in Parma ham.

Then Christmas pudding tarts, brownies, mini pavlova.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 26/11/2018 23:32

I love love love Boxing Day food.
Loads of cold meat - turkey, ham, pork, with bubble and squeak.
Loads of pickles ( picailly and red cabbage for us pre 80's kids) and chutney.
Cheese bread and pates.
Pretry much any desserts left over and the bloody Christmas cake.

Out on the table from lunchtime turnstile it's gone really.

Hope that helps! Not cheap, but they are great quality, we use them commercially

TrickyD · 27/11/2018 00:23

Thanks, Canihave, you were certainly not kidding about the price! I might pass on those, but very kind of you to help.
