A smart and comfortable money belt. Fancy toiletries in travel size, Molton Brown or similar, for a little bit of luxury if she is staying in hostels etc. A travel journal. A kindle if she doesn’t already have one. A lot of ‘basics’ like plug adapters and little padlocks if she doesn’t have these things already.

Monzo card, or similar, with some cash on it.

Earplugs. Huge great pile of them in a handy bag.

One of those Patagonia dresses that wash and dry in three seconds flat. Ideally a nice looking one.

I'm quite jealous of her!

This lovely little power adapter with usb points.

It's on my list: fed up with packing adapters that don't fit properly and poke their prongs in my luggage and this will allow me to charge my phone, iPad and power pack all at once.

I went travelling at 19 solo last year so have a few ideas (feels so long along ago since I have baba now). My mum never gave me a present as such but she lent me her ultra light yet warm down jacket with zip up pockets and inside pockets for hiding stuff that rolled up small to fit in the top of my bag when it was hot out which was definitely one of the best things I had with me. Somebody I met had been given a subscription to iTranslate by their parents which is an app that translates voice clips in different languages. In terms of stocking stuffers, if she is doing the hostel thing I recommend a multi plug adaptor as she will likely only get one socket to charge things which is a nuisance given most of backpackers travel with multiple technologies - also a decent soft shackle (the flexible wire ones) combination travel padlock as she will lose a key (even keeping it on a necklace doesn't prevent you from losing it as I learned the hard way) and a lot of lockers are awkwardly shaped for hard shackle locks. A travel towel that rolled up small and dried quickly was an absolutely lifesaver as well. Dry shampoo all the way. Portable chargers are definitely a win - I got 3 small ones from Poundland. I'd personally avoid bum bags/fanny packs as they scream tourist to pickpocketers and instead go for a money belt that goes underneath her clothes. Also some thin drawstring gym bags for keeping dirty clothes separate - I mistakenly thought I'd use carrier bags which are the loudest things in the world when you're trying to pack things up early in the morning to catch a train and will wake everybody in the hostel room up no matter how quiet you try to be. Also flip flops for the showers!!!
Also not so much a gift unless you put money on it but tell her to get a Caxton card as means she can free cash withdrawals from ATMs internationally.

Also if she is going to Istanbul, get her some harem pants! It was so hot but a lot of the locals stare at you if you wear shorts during the day so I had to pop into a shop and buy some when I was there. Different if you are older (the 30 year old women at hostel didn't have the same problem with locals staring) but I was 19, slim, short blonde hair and covered in tattoos and it was during Ramadan so the harem pants definitely helped a great deal - they were my first pair and now I own 5 and wear them all the time due to comfort.

Packing cubes.
Cloth bags to pack shoes and laundry.
A bag which fits on the suitcase handle and under a plane seat. (Check dimensions.)
A travel towel, eg Dock and Bay.
Memory sticks.

A big scarf which she can wear in places of worship and can also be a sarong, table cloth, etc.

Maxi dresses are also very handy.

A combination padlock for lockers. I had a key one when I went away. The key is still in the gulf of thailand somewhere, and I spent all evening trying to find a bolt cutter

SandAndSea · 25/11/2018 12:02

A carabiner and a water bottle which will hang from it.

SandAndSea · 25/11/2018 12:03

A small but good torch.

A fancy luggage label for her backpack.

Sleep headphones which sitvflat against your head to block out noise, but also double as an eye mask to keep the light out. I recommend these for people with partners that snore too.
