What To Buy - 3 month old baby

I have a 3 month old to buy for, and just wondered what you think new mums would prefer as a gift. Clothes, toys, books, or something practical? I will ask the baby's grandma, as she will have a better idea, but just wondered what MNers would prefer.

I had a three month old one Christmas and I appreciated 6-9 and 9-12 month clothes a lot (but be aware of season). Books and stuff were great too.

blackcat86 · 24/11/2018 17:16

Clothes in the next size up (6-9months), sensory toys, small projectors are always a win (the ones that project stars etc onto the ceiling, vtech toys. I have also got DD (14 weeks) a peek a boo elephant which is basically a toy that sings and plays peek a boo.

Fatted · 24/11/2018 17:17

Nothing! If you have to get something, money or vouchers put towards clothes, or clothes the next size up

Equimum · 24/11/2018 17:20

When DS was tiny, I really appreciated clothes to grow into, and toys to grow into. It’s a long time until her first birthday! DS2 was four months for his first Christmas, as we received a few things like a push-along walker and a little tractor that moved when you pressed the funnel. Both were too old at the time but very popular by early summer.

candlefloozy · 24/11/2018 17:32

Clothes or something like a Clarke's voucher

Sweetiedarlingletmein · 24/11/2018 17:37

I would personally prefer vouchers. My DD was 10 weeks old at Christmas and lots of people bought clothes in the next size up which was lovely but she was tiny so didn’t grow into them until the summer. They were all winter clothes so a lot didn’t get worn.

Leeds2 · 24/11/2018 18:00

I do understand the problem with clothes not fitting/being the right season. But I don't want to buy vouchers!

But nappies/formula/wipes etc. Babies that young are oblivious to Christmas, better to provide essentials that baby needs ad this will benefit the parents more

Sweetiedarlingletmein · 24/11/2018 18:34

Maybe do some things that don’t need a size then. Dribble Bibs (you can get some really nice ones) a nice hooded towel (not baby size, go for a toddler one with an animal hood or something) and socks will be used all year round so they’d be good. Teething toys might come in handy too.

stridesy · 24/11/2018 20:03

Is it a boy or a girl? My sil got us loads of clothes from mothercare which was great however they were dresses that were quite stiff and once they are crawling not overly practical. Nice outfits as I got a lot of second hand bundles so was nice to have a few good outfits. You can always put the receipt in there. Books to read to like the gruffolo set.

NerrSnerr · 24/11/2018 21:35

I agree that socks are always useful. The 'That's not my' books are good. Lamaze toys are good for that age too.

4forkssake · 25/11/2018 03:18

What about a grobag in the relevant tog & size (so maybe a 1 tog in a 6-12 month or 2.5 tog in 12-18 months). They were life savers for our DC who kicked off their covers. Or a voucher (I know you're not keen but some parents prefer to choose their clothes style) & a small teddy like a jelly cat style. I've also bought teddy's for little ones to match their names if I can find one, so maybe you could see if there is a teddy with the child's name.

DrWhy · 25/11/2018 03:50

Bathtoys, toys for them to grow into (stacking rings, balls, soft blocks, rattles), hooded towels, star blanket, grobag in the right tog for the season they will be that size. If you so clothes as others have said, think about the season. We have a newborn and our lovely in laws have bought a selection of clothes in different sizes including a fleecy sleepsuit in 6-9 months.,.. if I can’t get it changed it won’t get worn, some of DS stuff was passed on unworn for the same reason.

coffeekittens · 25/11/2018 03:57

Bath toys, that’s not my books, sensory toys, baby grows in the next size up, a nice pram blanket, my DD had a really loud and annoying fisher price dog thing which she adored.

DrWhy · 25/11/2018 03:58

Oh and vouchers really are good, I like choosing baby clothes myself, I’d actually rather have vouchers than clothes a lot of the time.

Bluerussian · 25/11/2018 04:09

One small thing, something really lovely, and a voucher or cheque.
You are nice person to be thinking of this so deeply, so many people don't.

I would possibly go for a keepsake type gift such as a special tree decoration as it's the baby's first Christmas or perhaps a nice money box or a book.

Also there are some great wooden toys you can buy for when s/he's slightly older: blocks/stacking toys, jigsaws, Noah's ark, pull along toys and so on.

Or you could go for something like a music box such as www.daisydaisydirect.co.uk/christening-gifts/djeco-musical-box-rabbit-the-the-garden-dj06072.html

Or a cute mobile like www.daisydaisydirect.co.uk/mobiles-art-cards/djeco-wooden-mobile-baby-animals-dd04388.html. I really like that but have no one to buy it for!

flowerycurtain · 25/11/2018 07:09

I've bought my new niece a set of books. She'll grow into them! May add some little booties if I see some cute ones.

Bandol · 25/11/2018 07:23

I have got my new niece a large (100 x 100 cm) personalised hooded towel. It's bigger than baby size - my DS is 7 and uses his still.

GreenDinosaur · 25/11/2018 07:29

Jellycat do a really nice soft ball that makes a satisfying Boing! noise. It's pricy for a ball but a great gift.

AJPTaylor · 25/11/2018 07:32

I always bought friends kids a bucket of wooden building blocks from ELC. I still have ours, including the cardboard bucket 23 years later!

TwoGinScentedTears · 25/11/2018 07:35

A terramundi. Beautiful objects that you save £1 or £2 coins in. When it's full it holds £200+

clevername · 25/11/2018 07:37

Sorry to hijack, but what do people think about a present for that age group that is definitely for the future? I've got two new babies in the family to buy for and I've bought them each a copy of the Dr Seuss book 'Oh the Places You'll Go' as part of their present because it's such a wonderful story (especially for the parents). My DP thinks I'm mental because it's far too old for them. Any thoughts?

Redskyandrainbows67 · 25/11/2018 07:47

Books are a wonderful gift. It’s not long before you need them and you are supposed to read to babies anyway!
Voucher is a miserable gift - def get a present.
Personally I would buy done classic beautiful books and a toy - bath toys are often forgotten

reluctantbrit · 25/11/2018 07:59

Toys for 6 months +, bath towels like hooded ponchos are great esp if they go swimming with the baby, the usual ones are pointless,

Books but I would stick to baby/early toddler books. We read a lot but I would have struggled to find space for anything more advanced to be used in years to come. Also, not everyone likes the typical classics, DD hated Peter Rabbit and I hate Dr. Seuss.
