1980s throwback tree

Every year since DH and I have lived together, I have bought and put up the Christmas decorations. I enjoy it, he isn't really bothered. I like the tree to be tasteful, with soft white lights and matching decorations in a colour theme, usually gold red or green or a combination of those.

Dh hankers for the Christmas decorations of his childhood. Coloured lights with foil flowers, tinsel, wooden rocking horses and Santas, baubles, those satin thread covered balls, and those paper fold out garlands and bells/balls on the ceiling. And Christmas cards on a string.

So, I have the tree, and the old multicoloured lights. I know where to get the wooden horse/snowman/Santa type decoration. Beyond that I'm stuck. Would you have multicoloured baubles in the same colour as the lights? What colour tinsel? And has anyone seen for sale the satin thread baubles and paper bells/garlands (other than eBay, because they seem to be selling for a fortune on there, presumably to other nostalgic 30/40 somethings).

I'd like it to look 80's-tastic without looking a complete mess but desperately need help!

I should add, I've done the tree my way for 18 years now, so he deserves a little bit of 1984 style this year.

I really want to get it right, though I know it's silly 😊

You defo need lametta and chocolate Santa’s etc to hang on the tree!

CoperCabana · 21/11/2018 20:14

Multi coloured tinsel. Pink, red, green, blue, gold, silver should do it!

Eminybob · 21/11/2018 20:18

Ooh, those chocolate liquers in the shape of bottles that hang on the tree.
And paper chains (the ones you had to lick and stick together yourself) hanging from the ceiling.

1980stat · 21/11/2018 20:19

Copercabana I have mentioned lametta to Dh before as that's what I had, and he said that his family weren't posh enough for lametta 🤣.

Different coloured tinsel you say? I can do that (we've never even had tinsel before).

I can definitely do paper chains. Well the kids can!

Oh i LOVE this thread

LovesLaboursLost · 21/11/2018 20:22

Do you mean the honeycomb type paper bells? They’re quite fashionable. Hema has them I think, maybe M and S?

KittensAndCake · 21/11/2018 20:22

I would love a 1980s tree 😍

VictoriaBun · 21/11/2018 20:24

Get yourself on Amazon and look up - retro Christmas decorations. You will thank me ! or perhaps not

Nissemand · 21/11/2018 20:27

Nooo.

For the proper 80s look, you need silver tinsel.

Maybe green or red or gold over the picture frames and shelves Xmas Grin but only silver on the tree.

Then multicoloured glass baubles, for the properly satisfying crunch when they fall off a drooping branch and hit the floor.

And you need those concertina style foil ceiling decorations from the £1 shop.

Ffsnosexallowed · 21/11/2018 20:27

You need these! Amazon have some great retro decorations

This sounds like what our tree looks like every year but I didn't realise I was paying tribute to the 80's Grin I don't really try and colour co-ordinate- our tree is full of a mish mash of multicoloured decorations, many of which have been made by the dcs or indeed were mine when I was little that my mum has given to me. We do have plain white lights, (and no tinsel or lametta) but the rest of it is a compete rainbow.

I do love beautiful subtle colour matched trees when I see them elsewhere but I really couldn't imagine ours being anything other than multi coloured. I hope you (and your DH of course!) end up loving your 80's tribute tree!

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 21/11/2018 20:32

You need some of these.

And the molded plastic Santas that hang on doors.

Pound land and Asda sell garlands those silver bell things etc

1980stat · 21/11/2018 20:33

Yes, the honeycomb paper bells. And also a dangly thing for the middle of the ceiling that opened out and hung down. I'm thinking that was a foil type job.

Tinsel over the pictures, yes! And those foil baubles are ace!

I have already bought myself an authentic 1980s Christmas jumper on eBay, too. I need a mock perm. Wrapping paper hasn't aged much has it?

Sorry I can't do short links, always forget how but I think these are the baubles you are after at an okay price

CoperCabana · 21/11/2018 20:39

Lol at lametta being too posh!

Nissemand · 21/11/2018 20:48

Wrapping paper has totally changed!

It used to come in single sheets from newsagents and markets, very thin, not glossy, definitely not glittery or shiny. Xmas Shock .

I remember a black sheet with Father Christmases on it, and a royal blue one with Santa's sleigh.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 21/11/2018 20:55

You need a silver and white plastic tree Grin with Barbie on top dressed in a doily dress with a tinsel halo

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 21/11/2018 21:00

Just put “vintage foil christmas decorations” into ebay search and glory in the tack which i totally haven’t just put a bid in on oh no not me

starlight45 · 21/11/2018 21:02

Angel hair. My mum loved it. We had tinsel and lametta. Multi coloured lights. Glass baubles, all different colours and shapes.
I have a gaudy tree. Just tinsel though. We also had foil chains coming from the corners of the room to the light in the centre.
