Family board game recommendations!

I'm stumped. Over the years MN has given us

Exploding Kittens
Pandemic
ticket to ride
carcassonne (star wars)
Risk
One night ultimate werwolf (Confused - I still don't get this game)
Labyrinth

I'm now stumped. We have to have a family board game. Considering Scotland Yard? DSs are 11 and 13.

MNHQ Update
We appreciate this thread is a little old now, but if you’ve come across it while on the hunt for similar recommendations, our guide to the best board games has been recently updated to reflect current availability and new releases. It’s been compiled based on advice from Mumsnet users as well as consumer reviews with fun for the whole family in mind. We hope it’s helpful! Flowers

<a class="break-all" href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameboardgamegeek.com/16992/tsuro" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Tsuro is a very easy to learn but great game.

I also like Takenoko.

DadJoke · 19/11/2018 09:13

Would I Lie To You board game
Jurassic Jumble
Munchkin
Dungeon Dice
Tiki Mountain
Code names
Pictionary
Who’s in the bag

DadJoke · 19/11/2018 09:14

I second Takenoko - such a beautifully made gentle game

AutoFillUsername · 19/11/2018 09:15

Sorry! (V competitive, we love it)
Dixit (quite a creative, reflective game that you either love or hate)
Quirkle
Bananagrams

GrouchingTiggerHiddenSomething · 19/11/2018 09:21

Popular in this household;
Munchkin (card game with good sense of humour - lots of versions available)
King of Tokyo (dice rolling game where you are a monster attacking Tokyo)
Takenoko (more gentle panda/gardening themed game)
Sushi Go (quick and easy card drafting game)
Magic Maze (cooperative game with no talking!)
Camel Up (betting which camel will get around the track first)
Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle (cooperative deck building game)
and we've just got
Clank (also a deck building game but not cooperative)

I've not heard of lots of these so thank you so much. Takenoko has a few votes so I'm off to google!

Telestrations and The logo game are our favourites

PlayingForKittens · 19/11/2018 09:52

Telestrations is good fun.

Gloom? Brilliant little card game.

Can anyone recommend a family game where...

-you don’t have to draw anything
-it’s not really confusing with lots of cards (Codenames)
-you don’t have to do lots of lying (One night werewolf!)
-not too rude (CAH).

I like Logo but once you’ve played it a couple of times, you know all of the cards.

I like games where you are answering questions, thinking of words or guessing links-like scattegories, Linkee, Trivial Persuit (I know!), Tension etc rather than role playing ones where you have to con other people into thinking you are a villager!

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

canihaveacoffeeplease · 19/11/2018 10:09

Veeeeery old school, but we used to love Totopoly horse racing game, and a VERY pared down version of mah jong when we were kids, and pretty young. Sill mah jong lovers now, although we play the full game!

DadJoke · 19/11/2018 10:11

Holidayshopping If you have not played Codenames, then I can tell you it's not confusing - a very simple game you can learn in 10 minutes. If you have played it then YMMV.

Fitting with your requirements:
Who's in the bag? (guess famous people)
Articulate (describe a word without actually saying it)
Pointless (like the quiz)
Wits and Wagers (everyone guesses, bet on the answer)

Recommendations for game which will work for primary aged dc and elderly parent with some memory loss would be really helpful. Is there actually anything out there?

DadJoke · 19/11/2018 11:11

dulcefarniente

Uno is pretty good and simple number/colour card game. Whot is similar.
Pass the Bomb - think of something in a category

Darkbaptism · 19/11/2018 11:49

dulcefarniente have a look at Tsuro (I mentioned it above). You place times one at a time to make a path with the aim of staying on the board but driving others off. Very easy to learn and has been popular with my primary school child and grandparents too.

Darkbaptism · 19/11/2018 11:50

Place tiles not times.

Gentlygently · 19/11/2018 11:51

Can anyone recommend one that:
Isn't too (or at all) competitive
Doesn't involve writing/spelling (DS dyslexic)
Suitable for age 5 and up but enjoyed by adults?

user187656748 · 19/11/2018 12:39

Right I think I might get two Tsuro and Takenoko

Has anyone got / played Obama Llama? Looking for a game for teens / adults that we can play in a group (2 families etc)

nordicwannabe · 19/11/2018 13:04

@dulcefarniente Dobble works well for us in a similar family set up. You look for matching symbols each go, so no complex rules to follow or stuff to remember - which means that someone with impaired memory and processing can still win.

As mentioned, Uno is also simple enough for a young child or elderly relative to be able to follow the basic rules (or for the other players to say which cards can be played) although they are unlikely to win if they can't use wild cards strategically, which can be a bit discouraging.

ClickyJoints · 19/11/2018 13:14

@Holidayshopping and @Gentlygently try pass the pigs - although it's not a board game it's always a hit in our house. You basically throw two pigs and you get different points depending on how they land. You can either choose to bank your points or keep throwing (but then you risk throwing a 'pig out' which will make you loose your points for that round. )

startingafresh1 · 19/11/2018 13:32

I'm tempted by both Tsuro and Takenoko, could anyone tell me which of these would be better as a two player game please?

DS is really into all things Japanese at the moment so both sound perfect but we often play games just the two of us so I'd prefer whichever of them would work best...

Thank you.

BlueChampagne · 19/11/2018 13:46

We love:

King of New York (a bit more to it than King of Tokyo)
Smash Up (loads of expansions for future presents)
Settlers of Catan
Isle of Skye
Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space (EFTAIOS)
Agricola
Caverna

Gentlygently how about Lego Creationary?

Darkbaptism · 19/11/2018 14:53

startingafresh1 they both work well as 2 player. Tsuro is fast paced and we generally play a few rounds. Takenoko takes longer so we just play one game.
