chocs for Asian taxi driver

Dd goes to a special school by taxi. Just her and another lad and the driver, no escort or anything, and 99 times out of 100 it’s the same Asian driver who takes her there and back. He usually has to wait a few minutes for her as despite my best efforts, she’s never ready.
I’m pretty sure he’s Muslim as very occasionally he wears traditional dress, although usually western clothes.
I know he has young children.
Would it be ok to buy a tub of chocs, something like Roses or Heroes, for his children and give it to him on the last day of term? Or would it cause offence? I don’t have any Muslim friends to ask for advice...

I mean a vegetarian Sikh or Hindu isnt going to eat halal sweets.

i doubt he would care if they were given as an end of term gift or a Xmas gift. I know a lot of Muslims all of varying strictness and none of them would ever be offended by Xmas gifts.

Dd says he is Muslim - they chat about all sorts of things on the way to and from school, including religion Smile

Nice tin of M&S choccy bikkies or shortbread! Who wouldn’t want that?

Sounds really good and kind. You dont have to look for a halal sign surely, but as PPs above said, suitable for vegatarians, which i have been told, (apologies if wrong) would mean that pork gelatine is not included (no jelly babies or wine gums, also they dont want anything with cochineal red colouring). I would rather give chocolate to my muslim friends than coffee because, depending on country of origin, coffee (turkish) or tea (north african or indian) would be the more common drink, but it of course depends on the individual. So if you know that he likes coffee, go ahead. But also, does palm oil count as halal?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 20/11/2018 18:00

Palm oil is veggie - but it’s a bit of an ecological nono these days.

Veggie is all good though.

glamorousgrandmother · 20/11/2018 18:06

Halal just means 'allowed' it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with meat. Most chocolate is suitable for vegetarians now so there wouldn't be a problem.

Muslims do recognise Jesus just as a prophet not as the Messiah so he wouldn't be offended by the idea of Christmas. I have been in Morocco and Libya at Christmas time - they even had decorations up but not in such a big way as here.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 20/11/2018 18:23

We have Christmas - most of my family are Muslim. I’ve even been asked for some Christmas carols on cd for family in the ME.

Only idiots or right-on types would be offended! Or hideous religious bigots.
