He is 14 6ft tall with size 12 feet.
He plays lots of sport.
He wants weights for Christmas. Where do we start?

Decathlon has great and well priced selection of weights.

Would I be able to buy a starter kit type thing?

As he is old enough to not believe in Santa (I am assuming) I would book him a set of PT sessions and a homemade voucher promising to buy him (within reason the equipment recommended by the PT) this way you get the right thing and know hr has been shown the correct technique. My 11 yr old super sporty DS has just had a block of PT sessions (I won them I wouldnt normally provide a PT for an 11 yr old!) And he has recommended resistance bands for him rather than weights (maybe because he is younger) you honestly dont want to buy a 14 yr old weights and just let them crack on, technique is crucial to avoid injury and long term problems.

Amazon do a good starter neoprene kit. Neoprene is good while your grip is weak as it keeps the weight in your hand.

Does your son know how heavy weights he wants? Weights are expensive and multiweight sets that are any good at all very expensive indeed (speaking from bitter experience) do not get cheap multiweight sets

Get him to take a look at an argos catalogue to give you an idea what is is after. Barbells? Dumbells? How heavy.

You dont what to get the wrong thing and have to carry them back to the shop!

I would second pp suggestion of buying a block of PT sessions instead. ds(14) goes to one now and a good PT that specialises in teenagers will talk to them about training effectively and more importantly safely at this age without hurting himself, especially when his growth plates will still be open.

At home ds mainly uses a pull up bar with help from a resistance band, light 2-6kg dumbbells for squat type exercises with arm lifts etc, and crunches/planks, burpees, mountain climbers, resistance bands etc.

He uses up to 30kg weights on a bar in the gym for squats and some lifting but only when supervised by the PT. I asked the PT about weights for Xmas and he says not to buy him heavy weights for home use yet as they aren't suitable at this age unsupervised and keep to the lighter dumbbells, resistance bands etc for now.

Thanks folks. I will talk to the or at the gym I go to for advise on session costs.
