Babies first Christmas budget?

lizzyttc2017 · 14/11/2018 11:11

I've just finished shopping shopping for my little girl who will be 7 months this Christmas. I spent £150 in total but she did need some new toys as she only really has rattles and tethers. I know everybody's financial situation is different and it doesn't even matter what other people are doing but is this an acceptable (not too extreme) amount to spend? Just want to make myself feel better and not like a crazy Christmas lady who has spent too much on a baby who won't even get it 😂

My son will be the same age and I think that’s a huge amount of money to spend but why should you care what I think? Is anyone else buying your baby presents?

HerSymphonyAndSong · 14/11/2018 11:15

However, you have a very lucky baby and I’m sure it will be great fun come Christmas Day

Ploppymoodypants · 14/11/2018 11:17

Wow, if all goes to plan we will have a v small DD, a month old. We are planning to put £100 in an ISA for her and have bought a ‘babies first Christmas’ Bauble for the tree. That’s it really...

But if your DD needed a few things then why not give them as Christmas. She will live flapping the paper around and you would have needed to buy the things anyway.

MumUndone · 14/11/2018 12:30

I won't be getting my baby anything! But he has an older brother so already has all the toys he needs. If he was my first (and a bit older like yours) I'd likely spend about £100.

countrybunny · 14/11/2018 12:35

I've spent around that - I know it's excessive but I'm excited and he's grown out of all his 'baby toys' so ready for some more interesting. Who cares what others think? Why not spoil your baby?

Reccy2018 · 14/11/2018 12:36

I'm not expecting to get anything for my 7 month tbh. Can't see the point, but I'm a bit humbuggy anyway. She's got new clue it's Christmas, doesn't know what presents are, and has close family that will get her some bits. If it makes you happy, you have the money to spend and it's not plastic tat that'll end up in a landfill for thousands of years, I say knock yourself out.

Emma765 · 14/11/2018 12:40

I'm just buying mine things she needs anyway and wrapping them up. She will be about a month old.

AvoidingDM · 14/11/2018 12:43

Sounds ok to me.

I don't get the logic of not buying for babies, people buy stuff for cats and dogs, and babies do need toys.

To the poster who said their baby has older siblings toys, beware of the "why did Santa not bring baby anything?' question from older sibling, best to have a couple of things.

blackcat86 · 14/11/2018 12:43

Everyone's situation is different but that is rather a lot IMO. DD will be 4.5 months at Xmas. I had a budget of £50 and still have £5 left. She has a projector which does a light show, a peek a boo elephant I found on eBay, linkes, bug socks, wrist rattles, a vtec puppy and some sensory toys.

louise987 · 14/11/2018 12:45

Spend as much as your comfortable with.
Personally when my DD was under 3 and didn't really get Christmas I had a budget of up to £50, things like sleeping bags, clothes, books and some simple toys - it was more token things for her to open rather then her actually getting real presents. Same as others too - I asked family to put money into her ISA when she was small, same reason, she really didn't need more toys.

Each to their own! She sounds very lucky.

Reccy2018 · 14/11/2018 13:03

I also think buying shit for pets is totally ridiculous but I quite enjoy my humbug status so just do what makes you happy!

lizzyttc2017 · 14/11/2018 13:19

I've calculated and actually spent £130 not that that makes much difference 😂 I don't want her to have too many things so I might see if my mum and dad want to claim anything from them as I know she wasn't sure what to buy. (They are mostly wooden toys and books that will last a little while, not just lots of plastic tat and as I said she was in need of some new toys). I don't know why I'm feeling so bad about spending this much haha, I'm so cautious of spoiling her (just an over excitable Mum obviously 🤷🏼‍♀️😅)

My first daughter was 2 months at her first Christmas and we spent about £200 on useless rubbish Hmm

Second daughter was 8 months so we spent a bit more, probably same at you.

Son will be two months first Christmas this year. Budget is about £30 but really only so the girls' don't think he's been left out by Santa.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 14/11/2018 13:28

She’s too young to be spoilt, but might be a bit overwhelmed

Sweetooth92 · 14/11/2018 13:28

Its my sons first Christmas this year and he will be 11.5 mo. I’ve spent a lot more than that on presents but he will not be drowning in them. He’s had a teepee and big cushion for his room to read his bedtime stories in and a climbing frame for the lounge that will last him years, and a duplo train. For his birthday a few weeks later he will be having his party. And a token parcel to open, maybe a teddy. Family and friends who have asked for suggestions we’ve said things he will like over the year as he gets older.

Don’t feel you have to justify your spending, you have brought what you feel baby needs or would like and that’s that!

Stringofpearls · 14/11/2018 13:35

My little one will be a similar age and we've spent about £100, lots of it is things she needs - socks, ear defenders, cardi etc and then she's got one main present which is a rocking unicorn suitable from now until she's about 3. I don't think you've gone crazy, it's more about what you choose than what you spend. If you'd bought her a £150 designer baby coat that will last about 2 months I'd be a bit surprised, but it'd still be your choice.

TeddyIsaHe · 14/11/2018 13:40

I started a savings account for dd for xmas and her first birthday (will probably add a lump sum for the xmas and birthday also) She’s the first grandchild on both sides so was massively spoilt anyway.

TeddyIsaHe · 14/11/2018 13:41

For this xmas and birthday that should say.

Cattenberg · 14/11/2018 13:53

My DD will be 9 months old and I've probably spent about the same as you. I even bought a stocking and paid an extra £5 to have her name embroidered on it Blush, but it should last for several years. I bought her so many baby books that I've given her most of them already. I don't know if she's bored with the ones she's had for a while, but I sure am.

HashTagLil · 14/11/2018 14:00

Stringofpearls

Why does your baby need ear defenders? Confused

TeddyIsaHe · 14/11/2018 14:12

Not answering for String but dd has had some since she was tiny and they’re great! Means she’s been to fireworks displays, Pride carnival, a daytime outside summer gig all with her little ears protected. They’re great for flying as well as they prevent the horrible ear popping sensation.

Stringofpearls · 14/11/2018 14:19

@HashtagLil Sounds weird doesn't it! They've been recommended as we're going on a long haul flight in a few months, they are baby/toddler ones Grin

chloem93 · 14/11/2018 14:22

If you can afford it, why not? Smile I wish I could do the same but my financial situation is a lot different! Plus my baby will still be a newborn around Christmas Day so everything I'm buying now to get ready for her arrival is eating up all of my money 😂 but next year she will be 1 give or two a few days or week and I'll spend what I can on her! Don't feel guilty for spoiling her at this age, I think you should just enjoy it as lots of people do say 'they grow so fast!' Wink

NationalShiteDay · 14/11/2018 14:30

Baby will be around 7mo and am getting things he needs but wrapping them up from Santa - nice bibs, new bowl etc for weaning, couple of teddies. More so older DC don't think Santa has forgotten him

Ceecee18 · 14/11/2018 21:11

DD was 5 months her first Xmas. Spent around £100 (the Jumperoo was most of that) but it was all things like stacking cups and other 'developmental' toys/books that we would have bought over the next few months anyway. She'll be 16 months this Xmas and we've done the same again. Mostly of musical, animal sounds and nursery rhyme books and toys that we would have bought her over the next few months anyway.
