At 2 they will reconisge pictures of the man, but wont understand what his job is.
3 they kinda get it, by 4 its definatly there.

hidinginthenightgarden · 14/11/2018 09:23

My 3 yr old gets excited by the word Santa but don’t think she really comprehends it. Age 4 is when they fully grasp it. 4-8 are the best Xmas years with full belief.

HairyToity · 14/11/2018 10:02

My 2 nearly 3 year old would say hohoho at pictures of father christmas and was able to tell Father Christmas that she wanted an elsa doll. At 3 she got it, but took it in her stride and not tremendously excited. At 4 the excitement really was tremendous and she couldn't get to sleep on Christmas Eve.

HairyToity · 14/11/2018 10:03

P. S. At 23 months she had no understanding, but enjoyed opening presets Christmas morning.

HauntedPencil · 14/11/2018 10:04

I've found closer to 3 than 2.

HauntedPencil · 14/11/2018 10:05

My 7 yo is already not really thinking he's real.

It can be a really small window!

Avegemitesandwich · 14/11/2018 10:07

I think 4 is probably the best age. And then suddenly they are 7 and starting to doubt things. It really is a tiny window actually isn't it Haunted Sad

AvoidingDM · 14/11/2018 10:37

See i though 3, but a colleague said her just 2yo got it last year.
Yip i get its a small window. My oldest was 3 before he got it. I think he still believes at 7 but I'm honestly not sure how convinced he is.

My 3 year old can talk about Santa. As in she understand he comes and brings presents (and she knows she wants a Moana doll) but she really doesn't understand much more than that. She just had her Birthday and she asked if Santa brought her those presents. :D She had no idea what was going on last Christmas but loved it all anyway.

But you're not wasting your time, keep talking about it, that's how she'll learn. :)

Willow1992 · 14/11/2018 11:32

I didn't think DS really got what was going on last year (he was 3 yrs 3 months) as he didn't seem very bothered or excited in the run up to Christmas but I made a fuss about santa anyway, we left out the snacks and I put santa footprints in the house for him to find in the morning.

He got more than I thought, because actually he still remembers and talks about what happened last year still in great detail!

At 2 it went completely over his head though. I think like PP said, he got that Santa was a man with a white beard but that was about it.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 14/11/2018 11:54

Ds mostly had it last Christmas (2 months shy of his 3rd birthday). He's been excited since August this year...

DevonshireCreamTea · 14/11/2018 13:52

My DS was 18 months last Christmas and didn't understand at all. 2 and half now and is really excited, reading Stick Man seems to have done the trick lol

Camomila · 14/11/2018 14:01

DS is 2.7 and understands father christmas brings presents at christmas...and christmas is when its snowy/there are decorations.

Although he didnt know what christmas was then, he remembers last christmas ('it was snowy with my grandparents'). We were on holiday over christmas so we took lots of photos /videos of him in the snow and he likes to look at them...maybe helps remembers it?

Frazzled2207 · 14/11/2018 16:52

Last xmas my youngest was 2.5 and definitely "got it"

PodgeBod · 14/11/2018 21:10

Last year mine was 2y10m and recognised Santa but wasn't excited or much bothered on Christmas eve. The next morning she was thrilled with her stocking but I don't think she really connected it to Santa. This year she gets it, and seems most excited for her stocking. My other DD who is recently 2 doesn't get it at all.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/11/2018 22:18

God is 3 1/2 and certainly gets it this year, don't think she really did last year.
I'm not sure Gds (2 1/4) has quite got it yet, but he'll probably catch the excitement from Gdd. I have 2 lovely 'The Night before Christmas' books to read to them.
Gdd has already dictated a wish list, including mermaids and 'a real baby, boy or girl'! We will have to explain that sadly, Father Christmas isn't allowed to bring real babies.

Jackshouse · 16/11/2018 08:00

DD was 1.5 last year a knew that Santa Claus would bring her presents of toys and sweets. She has just turned 2.5 and know he will bring presents but she seems to think he will bring her 2 presents if she is a ‘super tider’.

I am don’t know if I should tell her when it is Christmas Eve. When went on holiday in May she did not go to sleep until 11 because she was too excited.

SleepySofa · 16/11/2018 12:53

DS didn't really get it last year when he'd just turned 3, but he's definitely got it now (just turned 4).

ThriftyMcThrifty · 16/11/2018 15:30

My daughter is three and asks each night at bedtime if Santa will come. She’s so excited.

user1471426142 · 16/11/2018 19:48

Mine was 18 months and she sort of got it on Christmas Eve and was super excited but cried floods of tears on Christmas morning when she saw her presents. I think she was just totally overwhelmed. I think she will understand this year based on things she’s said and I’m hoping for a slightly happier child on Christmas morning!
