My eldest will be 9 at Christmas. I'm racking my brains trying to decide what to get her for Christmas and also her birthday.

Absolutely everything I suggest she either shrugs her shoulders, or says it's boring 🤦🏻‍♀️ she's only really interested in Barbie but my mum has bought her a barbiturate playhouse and she's got so many of the Dan things I don't really want to get any more.

Any ideas? I really hate getting stuff for the sake of it, I don't want her to miss out but I'll be wasting money getting something she'll never use.

I'm thinking that maybe I should just give her money or vouchers.

Barbiturate playhouse?!?

Barbie playhouse! 😂

Is there a craft she enjoys?

Polly99 · 12/11/2018 07:59

LOL at barbiturate playhouse!

It sounds to me as though she has enough stuff. How about getting her some sort of experience instead? A day trip somewhere with you (and no siblings)?

silkpyjamasallday · 12/11/2018 08:03

Would your daughter be interested in learning to make clothes for her Barbies? I used to love doing that at her age, you could get her some lovely fabrics and needles, thread etc. Or Fimo clay to make food and other things as accessories?

Joboy · 12/11/2018 08:08

Just give money

neurotransmittens · 12/11/2018 08:30

Does she still believe in Santa? I'm asking because the first Christmas after my DD 'found out' (10yo) she was meh about the whole Christmas list and gift giving thing.
She couldn't get excited about what she would like and shrugged shoulders.

Personally I think it's a little early to be giving money (if she still believes) as it takes some of the magic away but I agree with you on not wanting to buy for the sake of.
Perhaps a toy store voucher, Smyths etc?
Body shop gift set? Hairdryer? Is she into sports? Mine got hockey kits and equipment around 9 or 10 years but clothes vouchers and money are mainly all they ask for now they are older. I miss the toy store years Sad

popcornwizard · 12/11/2018 08:37

Ask her to write a Santa letter with everything she wants on it. I'm going to make my kids write them forever, although hopefully the requests will be a little less random now that they 'know'.

ContessaHallelujahSparklehorse · 12/11/2018 08:39

I want a barbiturate playhouse

Arrowfanatic · 12/11/2018 09:16

My eldest is 9 and isn't a big toy player anymore.

This year she has a fingerling, Harry potter mug, Fantastic Beasts Annual, joke book, a watch, a Nintendo game, jenga and some Harry Potter Lego. Plus her stocking has a little bit of make up (first time she's had any), lip balm and I'll pop a couple of those blind bags she loves so much in too.

Angelkd · 12/11/2018 09:32

Id still get her barbie things that she doesnt have then get her a few craft etc bits girls seem to love that.all my boys have asked for is jurrasic world toys even tho they have lots of that so ive got them that and a few bits they havent asked for x

mrsoutnumbered · 12/11/2018 10:24

Thanks all! Some great suggestions, definitely will be adding a lot of them to my shopping list once payday arrives.

I think the fimo is a great idea, she'd definitely like doing that.

@neurotransmittens yes she does still believe in Santa! I didn't expect her to by now but I'm happy to keep the magic alive as long as she wants to believe in it!

OP posts:
mrsoutnumbered · 12/11/2018 12:06

@popcornwizard she did a list and it had 2 things on it - a game and kinetic sand.

it's good that she doesn't want loads of stuff, but it's just really bloomin difficult to buy for her!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 12/11/2018 12:18

Nothing! If she can't be arsed to raise even a modicum of interest what's the point.

MaryJaneMay · 12/11/2018 12:27

I had the same problem with my two! They have so much plastic rubbish that they play with for 5 minutes before getting bored with it, so we bought them a book subscription from www.littleboxofstories.co.uk. They love it. They get a box addressed to them every month with 3 new books all wrapped up in arts and crafts paper and they have colouring pencils stickers and activity sheets and a surprise like a cool pencil or flash cards etc. We have a pretty awesome book collection for them now and the books get handed down.

mrsoutnumbered · 12/11/2018 12:34

@HollyBollyBooBoo

I can't really work out if she's just being mardy, or if she genuinely doesn't know what she wants. I know she'll definitely feel gutted if she gets nothing.

She's going through a phase of being stroppy and grumpy at the moment!

I know it’s a mumsnet chestnut but the something to wear/read/need idea might be useful.
Rather than buying toys for the sake of a big pile, think about other types of gifts. Is there something that she’d like for her room (maybe a lamp or rug), a new book series, some clothes, a new (fun) school bag?

user2085372673 · 12/11/2018 12:47

Just give her money and tell her she can choose when she is ready.

I was reading a thread on here yestersay and it said that everything around you will one day become land full of it doesn’t become an antique. She doesn’t want anything so don’t just guess.

If you really wanted to you can get out £10 notes in different shapes boxes and she can open those.

CountFosco · 12/11/2018 13:03

I have a 10 and 9 year old DDs. They are each getting a cushion, a cool bedside light and a hardback book for Christmas from us. Probably all stuffed in one of those big lego storage boxes. We've just moved house and they now have a playroom so they are all about the cool stuff for their rooms now. Clothes from GM (and a requested skateboard for one January birthday). From the rest of the family books, DVDs, boardgames (I have 3DC, boardgames are very popular), science kits, crafty stuff and lego. Stockings they get fruit, chocs and sweets, toothbrush, pants, socks, tights, shampoo or bubblebath, notelets, DVD, CD, lego figure, small playmobil, decoration for the tree, crafty stuff, card game, random small noisy toy (Simon was and remains a big hit).

Rixera · 12/11/2018 13:07

I second the stuff to make for Barbies idea. Still love making dolls clothes and furniture!

mrsoutnumbered · 12/11/2018 13:13

Absolutely right - I definitely won't be getting her toys. I think I will get some things for her room, the fimo (as I know she'll enjoy that), and some other useful bits and bobs. I have wasted so much money on toys over the years I am not going to do it again this year!

So a few bits and bobs I know will get used and if I'm under budget, then money or vouchers! Thank you all for giving clarity!

My DD9 has/wants/ is getting:

Sewing machine
Rollerskates
Go pro camera
Leopard print onesie
Arty crafty stuff (blow pens, modelling clay)
Gravitrax
Cozmo Robot (too expensive!)
Necklace
Books
Games
Basketball hoop
Amethyst (she loves rocks and crystals)
A knife for whittling sticks
Harry Potter nightie

I often buy things I think she may like rather than what she has asked for.

BlueChampagne · 12/11/2018 13:28

Blankets from Next were a surprise hit with my 2. And there must be tons of Barbie merch - onesies, duvet sets etc which are also useful!

BlueChampagne · 12/11/2018 13:29

Loved the Barbiturate playhouse ...

plaidlife · 12/11/2018 14:47

My pair loved a trip to ifly, which is indoor skydiving. No special equipment needed but high adrenaline activity.
