What do you put in your stockings?

mumof2sarah · 11/11/2018 20:05

So I've ordered all 4 of us new embroided stockings which I want to fill and leave on the edge of the beds (like I'm sure most people do or something similar).

I want to make it easier on myself by putting the same or similar in each one.

What do you put in your stockings?

There's me and my partner then my DD-teenager and DD-7 xx

So ours are quite big, my mum made them and they turned out larger than she was expecting so have had to put slightly more in than anticipated. But have stuck to the same pattern as when they had smaller ones. Something useful, something fun, something to read, something to eat (times this by whatever amount you need to fill it) then add one unwrapped thing sticking out the top- small cuddly toy/fluffy socks etc depending on age.

The useful things tend to be more fun than usual- socks with their favourite show/team on. Bath bombs in fun shapes etc

Food tends to be a couple of chocolate bits and a mini cereal (something far more sugary than usual)

Books are a mix of fiction and nonfiction fiction and tend to have an annual of some sort.

Toys/gift wise is totally individual. But it ends up being roughly the same balance in all stockings.

huggybear · 11/11/2018 20:13

I struggle with a stocking for my husband (I know some people might find it weird but we like it!) and it's almost always edible bits. He doesn't really want or have much 'stuff' and finding big gifts is hard enough, let alone a couple of little bits. I might get him a posh shower gel or something - something he will definitely use and will add a little luxury to every day!

Sorry I don't have any children but will follow with interest.

mummyof2boys30 · 11/11/2018 20:17

Dont do for adults here but kids is normally food (box pringles, christmas kinder, tube sweets), glass bottle coke, toothbrush (electric this yr) usually expandable facecloth. We also got larger knitted stockings this year so need more to fill

WeeM · 11/11/2018 20:17

Toothbrush, soap/shower gel, choc coins, iTunes voucher, slippers, socks, tangerine, sweets

Adviceandguidanceneeded · 11/11/2018 20:19

stinkypoo · 11/11/2018 20:32

Small toy presents, chocolates or sweets, satsuma, tights, maybe a dvd if there's space.

Tailrunner · 11/11/2018 20:38

DDs (9 and 6) are getting noise putty, rainbow slime, Harry Potter sweets, Harry Potter map, Harry Potter snowglobe, Harry Potter Lego minifigures (do you see a theme Grin), bath bombs, slipper socks, small pikmi pop, playmobil blindbag, a snowman squishy and if I’m feeling generous I’ll add a gift card so they can download some new audiobooks.

DP has crap trumps (like top trumps but rubbish cars), wallet ninja, gin infusion tea bag things and gin mini’s, chocolate orange, cycling gloves, cufflinks and some nice moisturiser and lip balm which he likes but won’t buy for himself. I’ll top it up with chocs, nice coffee or beer depending on space.

ThreeTree · 11/11/2018 20:40

For my husband the list is normally includes:
Socks
Boxers
Body spray
Deodorant
Steripods

Littles flavoured coffee
Various chocolate bits (chocolate coins, Hotel Chocolat and Charbonnel & Walker)

And then a couple of different things each year; mini games, Blu rays, tie, cuff links, scarf etc. This year I am planning on a self massage ball, dobble and maybe a travel mug.

Me, my dh and ds all have one and it’s usually the same stuff.
Chocolate coins
Satsuma
A Christmas bauble (we collect them)
A small token gift - for dh it’s socks or a dvd, for ds it’s a toy or something similar.
Ds is only two so we may develop them as time goes on but the top 3 items will always be there

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/11/2018 21:01

I bought some gorgeous prelit tapestry ones for my teens .

DS (he'll be 19 in December) will get all his presents in his stocking (not because I;m buying him nothing but because they are small)

He'll get a Dec 1st CEH with his PJs and Robe and other bits .
On Christmas morning :
His £50 note in a ribbon tied box
A voucher for Game
Cologne
Terrys Chocolate Orange
Bits for his guitar

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/11/2018 21:04

DD likes make-up, clothes

She'll get earrings (and some jewellry for her piercings (tragus/belly but they'll be early so she can have them fitted)
Gift cards (TopShop/Urban Outfitters)
Underwear (VS Pink)

She also has a CEH on Dec 1st .

WheelchairWoes · 11/11/2018 21:08

Toothbrushes
sweets
blind bags
little toys like squishes
Usually a pair of mittens and a hat too

mumof2sarah · 11/11/2018 21:17

Is CEH for like December box? (I'm sleepy and can't figure it out ha ha)

I do my girls a box on 1st that includes a cpl of Christmas movies, Christmas activities (colouring books, paint own baubles etc), Christmas slippers, stuff for a hot chocolate station for the month, their Christmas cards to write for their friends etc etc so they actually get use and wear from them all.

I'm loving the stockings ideas though will probably end up buying too mmuch 😂

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/11/2018 21:26

CEH - Christmas Eve Hamper but now I don't need to get them wound down and off to sleep at a semi reasonable time (indeed with teens they'll go out with mates , wander in at 2am and sleep till 10am)

DD likes ££ pyjamas so she'll start wearing them as soon as she can Xmas Grin, we've done them on the 1st for the last couple of years now .

mumof2sarah · 11/11/2018 21:28

@70isaLimitNotaTarget thankyou I feel so silly that was so obvious lol. Told you I was tired. I can't wait now, I way to excited already for the whole season x

I read somewhere when my dds were little to do stockings with:
Something to eat
Something to make
Something to keep
Something to use

I did chocolate orange, small craft kit, ear rings or jewellery if old enough, if younger an ornament for tree, toiletries... Make up now but could be everyday ones.

Now I follow same basic rules.. Four adult dds, all get chocolate, small craft or stationery type item, one special item.. This year its a charm for charm bracelets they all have, and set of nice underwear.
Then I fill with flannels, toothbrush, their fave shampoo and a few nice bits of make up.
They each get individual items that are luxuries for them.. One likes cooking so she gets expensive olive oil etc, one likes her make up so gets the expensive branded items I know she can't afford herself..

Basically I love doing the stockings and we are lucky to be able to fill them with the luxuries the girls can't afford by themselves

mumof2sarah · 12/11/2018 07:50

Hi everyone I'm loving all these ideas... I'm just curious where the toothbrush idea comes from.: so many do that but I've never thought of it before, is it a traditional thing to put in? Not knocking it, I've just added it to my list but I'm just curious xx

Ours are 4 and 6 but also have slightly bigger stockings than intended!
We put in
Orange in the toe, chocolate coins.
Pants and socks (these bulk it out a fair bit which is good).
A magazine or similar (last year they got the first of a subscription so we may keep the December issues aside to do this again). This fills up the leg bit.
Then a couple of small toys. I also have two big tubes of Smarties from Poundland that will fill it up again.
Trying to cut down on plastic so cardboard tubes for the smarties and foil for the coins is ideal.

Small, but high value items like theatre tickets go under the tree.

DinglyDoorDancer · 12/11/2018 11:55

DS (3 yrs old) is getting:

Chocolate coins
Christmas skittles set
Coloured pens
Glittery glue
Small wooden trucks
Stickers
An apron for baking
Cute bandaids for his doctor’s kit
Letter from Father Christmas (from Polar Post)

Troika · 12/11/2018 15:47

Stockings are the main event here!

They always have
A shiny coin
A satsuma
A tree decoration
Chocolate coins
A tube of sweets
A box of Christmas animal biscuits
A toothbrush
Shower gel/ bubble bath
Deodorant for the older ones

Then lots of bits and pieces depending on their age/interests. So dd1 is getting make up type stuff, ds some football themed stuff as well as a few toys, dd2 is getting small toys that build on existing sets (or ones she is getting for Christmas eg playmobil figures to go with her present of playmobil).

They usually each get a game or activity too as well as a bigger present.

My grandmother always used to put one leg of a large pair of opaque tights in the stocking and put the presents in that so that they could overflow the stocking whilst still being contained. I do that sometimes when there’s too much to fit in.
