My DD 8 has is really into natural history and all things animal. She has asked for a bat detector for Christmas (we live very rurally) any other ideas or inspiration that springs to mind?

Thanks....

Bug Hotel
Wormery
For the spring - butterfly raising kit (you can buy the habitat net now and get a voucher for the caterpillars)
David Attenborough DVDs.

The Natural History Museum has an online gift shop too.

Rock tumbler polisher thing? I’ve seen some on amazon but no idea how well they work!

If she’s 8 you could look around local zoos & sanctuaries for a feeding voucher?
I think they start around the age of 8.

I fed penguins last year at Birdland & it was amazing.

National geographic do a subscription.

Bug kits, the works or Smiths might have a collection on books on animals.

There’s a book I had as a child, The Amateur Naturalist by Gerald Durrell, which I adored. It’s maybe aimed a bit older, but if she’s a good reader then it should be fine. It’s full of descriptions of different British environments, and photos of the types of life you can find, and how. It also has all sorts of projects, from building a wildlife pond, to how to do taxidermy, which my mother certainly didn’t let me experiment with, but was fascinating to read.

It’s available really cheaply second hand on Amazon.
