£20 gift for 8yo girl

I'm doing the Met Gift Appeal and have been assigned an 8yo girl.

My kids are older than this so I'm a bit out of touch. What do you think an 8yo girl would like at around the £20 mark?

Slime kits, LOL dolls, Lego, Lottie Dolls (mine wants the astronaut one). All on the list for my 8 yo girl.

I’ve just given my niece this for her 8th birthday. She loved it

reluctantbrit · 10/11/2018 20:38

Anything Smiggle despite not liking the quality.

Racecardriver · 10/11/2018 20:41

When I was 8 my Christmas list included lemony snicket (but I don’t think you can get the whole lot for anywhere near that), paints, pencils, chocolate, bath bombs and, some kind of doll I think.

As a generic gift I think crafting things are always a good idea. A novel may be a nice touch as well. I would suggest getting a mix of things rather than one big thing.

MarcieBluebell · 10/11/2018 20:50

There's slime factory diy on argos or smyths.

MarcieBluebell · 10/11/2018 20:52

Smiggle is also a good shout.

Steviea88 · 10/11/2018 20:58

Slime, or other science making kit or a diary something like that.
Or a pomsie? Apparently all the rage this year. About £17 i think they are.

teabag20048 · 10/11/2018 21:03

Lego. Enchantimals. Sequins. Squeezemals. Anything fluffy!! Smiggle. These are the things my 8 year old likes at the moment.

giveovermypreciousss · 10/11/2018 21:05

My dd is 8. This year she wants LOL dolls, slime, squidges, barbies and the barbie scooter (£11.99 in smyths)

Asj0405 · 10/11/2018 22:47

Don't think you can go wrong with slime really this is the one my daughter's asked for.

these also keep my DD of a similar age entertained for hours.

Candle making, crystal growing, bath bomb making or anything crafty I would think would be fine for majority of girls that age.

Isadora2007 · 11/11/2018 00:57

I would go for a science kit that has lots of bits plus slime. Rather than “girly” crap. Encourage STEM stuff and some messy fun.

SixToEightInchesOfSnow · 11/11/2018 07:46

Slime is perfect fro an 8 year old girl but do consider that you don’t know her situation. Will there be anyone to help her make it? Will she get into big trouble if she makes a mess with it? I had to repaint the window sill in the living room thanks to DS and slime! Luckily for ds he doesn’t live in a volitile household and it was just dealt with but you don’t know why kind of household this girl lives in...

Personally, I’d go for something fashionable so she can fit in, so lol dolls, pomsie, are fingerlings last year?

Leatherboundanddown · 11/11/2018 21:02

LOL dolls are popular but they are really expensive for what they are. Any of the little blind bags would probably be good too. Dd would be happy with any blind bag.

With £20 I would probably get a £9 LOL, a Jacqueline Wilson book and spend the rest on stationery and pens / pencil case.

reluctantbrit · 12/11/2018 14:49

I agree with PP that slime or a science kit can be difficult. For science kits you often need supervision and additional stuff and slime can be a mess (I banned DD and her friends outside, there is still glitter on the garden table).

I think for a girl who is on the Met list means they do not have lots of money and fitting in with the crowd may be more desirable for her than extending her horizon with STEM (despite me being a STEM advocate myself for DD).

immummynoiam · 12/11/2018 16:58

paperchase or snuggle for a nice notebook and pens

immummynoiam · 12/11/2018 16:58

Smiggle, not snuggle!

mrsfeatherbottom · 12/11/2018 17:02

A Lottie doll! (Not slime - horrible stuff!)

immummynoiam · 12/11/2018 17:03

I agree they’d love slime but it’s the opposite of a gift for their parent plus ruined so fast

Bangwhistlepop2 · 12/11/2018 20:18

Have a look in The Works, loads of good value stuff in there. I filled a patterned box with stationary and chocolate for my 7 yr old niece. she loved having lots of small things to open. I would think a similar gift for an 8 year old would work.

Stompythedinosaur · 12/11/2018 21:08

I think slime is a good choice as it has a very wide appeal.

Another popular choice is a secret diary.

Thirtyrock39 · 12/11/2018 21:19

Hama beads are still popular
Also anything with llamas, alpacas, unicorns or narwhales
Sequin change T-shirt's - primarkhave a jojo siwa range

reluctantbrit · 13/11/2018 15:28

I would stay away from clothing, my 11 year old wears 13-14.14-15 currently. Far too unpredictable.
