Ideas for family overseas

It’s so expensive to post anything to them, so I end up either doing 4xhats and scarves or amazon vouchers - some years we just swap vouchers Blush Anyone got ideas? Adult couple and young adult child.

I am German with family back home. If an item is larger I buy it at Amazon Germany and get it shipped directly to my mum/PIL. I then send a small parcel with some treats separately.

No point in just wasting money on postage if I can get it gift wrapped and delivered for me.

Thanks reluctantbrit. Coincidentally I have used amazon.de in the past but have noticed more and more things saying they will not ship to Switzerland (where they live). I tried to buy Migros vouchers once but wouldn’t let me pay without a local billing address.

Next Direct posts direct to Switzerland and I use it a lot for family in Asia & Australia.

Matching PJs?

What's your budget for each present? And is the young adult m or f?

Thiswayorthatway · 10/11/2018 18:21

When I lived in Switzerland I had a PO box in Germany to (legally) get round the import tax on parcels. Is this an option?

Hohocabbage · 10/11/2018 19:48

I think it would be an hour or two to reach Germany sadly! Thanks for all the replies, I didn’t expect so many. That’s interesting about Next, will have a look! I’d spend 50 or 60 overall. It’s a nephew in his 20s. Could maybe get an Alexa they could all use it?

Amazon won’t deliver an Alexa dot there either Confused
Could buy one here and post it - assume a UK Alexa would work in Europe? Can’t see why not...

Would galaxus.ch be anything? I used to see them advertised everywhere when we lived in Switzerland - I don't think you need a Swiss address or credit card either.

Hohocabbage · 11/11/2018 11:02

Great thanks i’ll have a look.
Next say they won’t deliver to an address other than the account holder (?) so that wouldn’t work.

Is that not only fir the first order? If so, order something for you which you can then return, then order for Switzerland.

Gift vouchers for a well-reviewed/favourite restaurant. Could be found with a bit of googling/asking them?

Thiswayorthatway · 12/11/2018 11:27

Be very careful about sending anything direct, the Swiss are very keen on import tax. Postmen carry a credit card machine and you pay on the doorstep before you can receive a parcel. Manor.ch is tbe closest local equivalent to John Lewis.

Thanks for the suggestions, and the warnings!
