Thread for expensive teens

What are you getting your teens? DD’s tastes have become very designer, I totally blame all those chumps on Instagram. She likes Gucci belts so might get her one plus some perfume, bare minerals skincare and Victoria’s Secret clothes.

She doesn’t expect anything but I’d like to get her something nice as opposed to loads of cheaper stuff.

What you getting your teens this year?

My DSis 17, the only thing he wants is cash so that’s what I am giving him. He usually saves it and then might buy something later in the year. Out of ‘principle’ I would not buy a £100 pair of trainers for him but feel more comfortable giving him £100. (Just as an example, I don’t think he would actually spend £100 on trainers). I used to do a stocking full of bits of pieces but honestly realised that it was more for my own enjoyment than his. This year I will just buy five ‘token gifts’,; Lynx, Boxer shorts, chocolate, box of his favourite cereal (expensive!) and some stationery for school.

Ragwort · 10/11/2018 08:35

My son not my sister !

GreenTulips · 10/11/2018 08:39

Yep money here aswell

Kids are less likely to spend 'their own' money on expensive items yet have no bother spending yours.

Small gifts to open plus cash

I usually do

A board game
Sweets
PJs
Earrings
Money

Jaxtellerswife · 10/11/2018 08:44

My step son has very kindly specified he would like five new designer tracksuits and 300 in cash to spend.
Sure, why not double it 💁🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Jaxtellerswife · 10/11/2018 08:44

Just to be clear, he's out of luck on all of that lol

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 10/11/2018 08:48

My 2 sons also have expensive tastes. I've bought them a Chromebook laptop each which I hope will help with homework.and a printer. Also trainers Nike air max 100-140. A gaming chair each from grandparents. Designer pants and smellies are also on the list. And clothes. I don't give money at Xmas but maybe will start to in the future to spend in the sales

dancemom · 10/11/2018 08:55

Dd doesn't know what she wants which is even worse!

I've got her a Bluetooth speaker, a Gilmore Girls hoodie, some make up and a few bits and pieces.

She loves VS so I'll probably get her a voucher for that.

LucheroTena · 10/11/2018 08:59

Glad I’m not the only one. Nice to not have endless lists of tat any more but blimey the stuff they want can cost £££

Grin at 5 new designer tracksuits AND £300 cash.

We made the mistake of wandering through selfridges last week. DDs eye was caught by these hideous LV handbags covered in cheap looking patches. A steal at £1k+.

I'd give an amount of cash (£100) and some token gifts. I wouldn't buy a Gucci belt because £270 is too much for a belt imho but I'd let them buy that themselves if they wanted with my money and and any money they get from other people.

LucheroTena · 10/11/2018 09:13

See I thought a belt would be a good idea as not easy to lose it or have it nicked, unlike a designer handbag. Plus can be worn for years.

My DS is obsessed with the skate brands Supreme and Palace. His Christmas list will be full of Overpriced unobtainable things.

LucheroTena · 10/11/2018 09:19

Grin overpriced, unobtainable. That’s the thing, I think because of all these talentless celebrities covered in designer they think that it is!

I've got my daughter a coat that she was hankering after that was only £50 but she'll wear it until it falls apart, other than that she'll have cash. She's at uni and I flatly refuse to fund her extremely expensive taste in skincare and makeup, there's not wrong with cheap stuff at Superdrug 😂

My son wants all cash but needs a new PlayStation because he overheated the last one, don't worry he says they're really cheap secondhand, I've looked, they're not so he can jog on.

LucheroTena · 10/11/2018 09:20

Obtainable that is .

DDs quite happy wearing Zara, Topshop etc plus a few medium priced bits from Hollister and those type of shops. But then eyes up these ‘pieces’. Trainers are another bugbear. Why are they £100?.

I have a DS (nearly 19) who gets cash because he saves. There's no point buying him 'things' . I'm looking at underwear for him, thinking "He's just as happy sliding his bum into a pair of H&M trunks as he would be CK"
He gets shoes and clothes when they are outgrown and I need to prod him with a sharp stick to get him into shops.
He doesn't cost any less than DD , he has a December birthday so 2 lots of money !
I bought him some toiletries , he'll get sweets, underwear, Games voucher.

DD (16) loves her brands and knows what she wants. There's usually a compromise. She buys her own jeans and clothes from PLT .
TopShop jeans , trainers, bags are bought by me.
She is more influenced by her friends than Instragram etc , so no 1K bags . (thankfully)

I've bought her some earrings , ordered her tragus stud , she'll get some Victoria Secret Pink underwear. Gifts cards for TopShop and maybe Urban Outfitters.
She's already had a coat from UO but got a discount with her student card.

I;m doing a Beauty Advent for her , so I won't buy her as much for Christmas itself (she's fine with this)

Their presents go in their stockings in their rooms , not under the tree. (And they don't get up till late on Christmas Day so that's a relief after the 5am wake-ups when they were little)

NoLeslie · 10/11/2018 09:35

My teen wants an apple watch and a dog Confused. So I'm thinking of 'fun ways to wrap cash'.

nicebitofquiche · 10/11/2018 10:01

OP I think the Gucci belt will be unfashionable fairly soon. See them everywhere with lots of fakes around. I wanted the Gucci velvet bag until I saw some of the Geordie Shore lot with them. Put me right off.

adoggymama · 10/11/2018 11:22

You do realise you don't have to actually pander to your teens demands for Christmas? Maybe teach them about how some children get nothing instead of buying a ridiculous Gucci belt🤦🏻‍♀️ you can get cool looking dupes of them from top shop etc for like £15!

LynetteScavo · 10/11/2018 17:59

DS2 has asked for parts to build a gaming computer himself. He has no interest in computers, and little interest in gaming....but his best friend does.

DD wants a dslr camera, for about £500. If she showed any interest in taking any photos on her phone or my camera I wouldn't mind....apparently if we don't get one for her we are holding her back in her future career as a photographer. She also wants a Rolex. She can dream on!

zenasfuck · 10/11/2018 18:19

I'm struggling for DS this year. Can not get my head round not having a huge pile of gifts

He's not fussed, it's me

He's having a new gun for his hobby which is 500, another 120 on bullets

He'd like some timberland boots but other than that I'm completely out of ideas - he just doesn't like 'stuff'

LucheroTena · 10/11/2018 19:50

Grin at wanting a Rolex.

Well, she doesn’t want a Gucci belt, too common, loads wearing rip offs from the market. So back at square one. I’ve said emphatic no to 1 grand LV and Gucci disco or belt bags. Which she completely understands. But still. What to get. Went to Base today. Lots of people who don’t look like they have two ha pennies to rub together trying on Moncler and Canada Goose. Temps in this part of the country rarely drop below 10c...

Pressed send too soon. Families also under pressure from teens to buy expensive garb.
