Books for 7 year old?

Blondie1993 · 08/11/2018 15:28

Hello,

Could anyone suggest any good books for a 7 year old? Doesn’t necessarily have to be ones he can read alone as we read together before bed anyway. I was thinking of some more Roald Dahl and possibly How to train your Dragon/Horrible Histories? I wasn’t 100% sure how suitable they would be for his age. Any advice would be much appreciated Smile!

YEs to those that you’ve mentioned, and Harry Potter too.

Ones that my 7yos enjoy being read to them at the moment include

• all of Roald Dahl (apart from Boy/Solo etc). Just started listening to the Matilda audiobook in the car and it's FABULOUS.

•How to Train Your Dragon because DD is dragon obsessed (although the books are VERY different to the TV series/films).

• Harry Potter. Just finished book 1 and starting book 2. I wanted them to read these (and Matilda!) themselves but they are loving the story so much that I've relented.

Books they are enjoying reading themselves
• Wigglebottom Primary series. Particularly great because they feel like a novel but are actually 3 short stories in one book.
• Mudpuddle Farm books
• DS is loving a series called Project X, which I think is a bit of a precursor to Beast Quest.
• DD has some Unicorn Magic books she dips into.

I've also bought them an early reader version of the Magic Faraway Tree mini-books and a box set of the 100-mile An Hour Dog books which look funny.

All Book People and eBAy finds.

Harry Heape's "Shiny Pippin.." books are fab! Really funny. There are 2 so far my DS 7 loves them as does my DD 10.

Wormwoodm · 08/11/2018 17:33

My son and his friends love sea quest and beast quest books. They read them alone and have made them significantly more enthusiastic about reading.

DelurkingAJ · 08/11/2018 18:41

Jeremy Strong is great. Captain Underpants. Some of the Enid Blytons still work (Secret 7 to read to themselves). Moomin books.

Surprising recent success here was the My Naughty Little Sister books.

How about the Usborne puzzle adventure books? I loved those and DS (6) is beginning to be able to handle them.

MrsMrsMrsMrs · 08/11/2018 21:13

7yo DS likes the following:

Diary of a wimpy kid set
Tom Gates
Astrosaurs
Beast Quest (shoot me now🙄)
He was very into Horrid Henry books for a long time previously.

Stompythedinosaur · 08/11/2018 22:50

I've just finished reading The Hobbit to my 7yo, which she loved. Another hit was the usbourne illustrated viking myths.

She also like the Pierre the Maze Detective books.

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/11/2018 23:31

I thoroughly recommend this (and the rest of the series).

My DSs were hooked and managed to meet the author at a book festival and he was a really lovely guy with all the kids too.

WhirlwindHugs · 08/11/2018 23:36

Pamela Butchart there's a werewolf in my tent (and the rest of that series)

Dave the pigeon.

RomaineCalm · 08/11/2018 23:41

If he's into football/sport have a look at the books by Tom Palmer. DS loved those.

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 09/11/2018 17:40

David walliams- highly recommend rat burger. Not so much demon dentist as says about santa/tooth fairy not being real!! Awful auntie wasn't great but enjoying grandpa's great escape and gangsta granny was good too.

Hi, My 7 year old isn't ready for huge chapter books yet but I bought this last weekend for him and he hasn't put it down. He has been reading it alone and it was so lovely to hear him laughing out loud! www.whsmith.co.uk/products/dog-man-dog-man-1/9781407140391

Turn2Page394 · 09/11/2018 22:40

My daughter is 7 and she loves the Daisy books (Daisy and the trouble with burglars/giants/school trips etc.
There's also a series by the same author called 'Jack Beechwhistle' which we've not read yet, but if the Daisy books are anything to go by they'll be brill too Smile

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 09/11/2018 22:48

Artemis fowl books by Eoin Colfer are excellent.

howcomes · 10/11/2018 01:09

My son loves the Bolds by Julian Clary, there are three in the series as good chapter books to be read at bedtime. Otherwise to read himself he likes DogMan and the series called Press Start starring Super Rabbit Boy by Thomas Flintham

Wobblington · 11/11/2018 15:12

Fish Head Steve - a comic book series rather than a story book. Hands down is the fav book of DS7. He also likes the Faraway Tree / Enchanted wood Enid Blyton books but prefers the updated books to my originals. They also do young reader stories in the series which he can read on his own.

Misty9 · 11/11/2018 16:35

My 7yo is obsessed with captain underpants books (dav pilkey). He also loves the project x alien adventures series. Books I've read to him are the faraway tree and wishing chair books.

bluebirdsong · 11/11/2018 22:34

Harry Potter
Dogman
Thirteen Storey Treehouse Series
Magic Faraway Tree

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 12/11/2018 07:37

King Edwin flashy pants series by Andy Riley, really humorous and the one book at bedtime I actually look forward to reading. Also got him some horrible science books but won't know the verdict on those yet.

Was looking at beast quest but is it not good mrs

Catsize · 12/11/2018 21:14

My 6yr old loves reading Horrid Henry, Secret Seven and David Walliams books.

Blondie1993 · 12/11/2018 21:24

Thanks for all the replies, some of these look brilliant! I found some books we haven’t read in a while by Gerald Durrell - The Fantastic Flying Journey and a dinosaur one, just starting to re read them and they are great!

OP posts:
AndMiffyWentToSleep · 12/11/2018 21:28

I agree with:
Captain Underpants
Dog man
13 storey treehouse (and the rest in the series)
King Edwin Flashy pants

Oh and Dinosaur Cove

Flutternotsoshy · 12/11/2018 21:35

Bit late to the party, but dd7 has read everything (age appropriate) by Roald Dahl, The Magic Faraway Tree series, and as she's a girly girl who is slightly obsessed, loads of unicorn books.

For Christmas I have bought her the first 10 how to train your dragon books, and her uncle has bought the worst witch series (she's read book one)

Can I make a suggestion of the doctor Doolittle books? Think I read them at about age 7/8 (they're next on dd's list as well)

Flutternotsoshy · 12/11/2018 21:36

Pressed post too early!
(Where have my paragraphs gone?)

Also check the book people if you haven't already. Their bundles are brilliant value
