Newspaper from the first Christmas he was born?

Finfintytint · 07/11/2018 16:15

What are his interests, hobbies?

turkeyboots · 07/11/2018 16:17

We got DHs late grandpa a subscription to BBC History magazine which he really enjoyed.

TalkingOrmer · 07/11/2018 16:17

this book is very good and was reduced to 5.99 the other day.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 07/11/2018 16:19

What does he like? Last year we gave my FIL some beer from a craft brewery in the village where he used to live, that went down really well.

Alanamackree · 07/11/2018 16:20

News archive subscription if he can manage the internet
Heated jacket/waistcoat
Heated throw
Jumper with high wool content
Wrist warmers

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 07/11/2018 16:22

Does he have a garden? Bird table with food?

TalkingOrmer · 07/11/2018 16:22

Sorry - the Ordnance survey book was reduced to 7.99.

this is also a good one

StrongTea · 07/11/2018 16:23

I have an uncle in that age group, I make up a sort of hamper with small gifts, scarf, socks, mug, biscuits, book. Small toiletry set.

Deminism · 07/11/2018 17:20

Bottle of whisky.

PizzaPlanet · 07/11/2018 17:37

One of those heritage dna kits?

Talith · 07/11/2018 17:38

You can get some lovely memory books from the 50s 60s 70s... Even earlier. I'll dig out a link. Gone down well with my elderly relatives including those with dementia.

Talith · 07/11/2018 17:52

I can't find the exact ones but they were large A3 size, hardback. Not desperately expensive but with one for each decade from the 30s onwards. Amazon searches will pull up similar.

I'm struggling with my dad (84) - I've spent the last 40 years giving him either a book or a record/CD. Now he only reads on Kindle (and you can't give specific books!) and his hearing is such he really doesn't listen to music. My parents are lucky enough to have a decent pension so any bits of tech (tablet, firestick etc) they want they buy for themselves.

Last year I did a subscription to Cinema Paradiso - might be of interest to anyone whose parents still use DVDs and who like arthouse / foreign cinema.

I've also done theatre / concert tickets in the past which again gets 2 parents in one hit Grin (but tricky now because of dad's hearing - really only a decent gift for mum)

Other past hits were a historical Ordnance survey map of the area where we live / walking boot bags for the back of the car / expensive walking socks.

This year I think mum might get some nice socks + a kindle voucher, Dad a good bottle of madeira or something like that. Boring but I know they'll actually get used and appreciated...

BlueChampagne · 08/11/2018 13:20

thegreylady · 08/11/2018 16:35

The Ordnance Survey Puzzle Book is £4.99 from The Book People.

wentmadinthecountry · 08/11/2018 22:28

A voucher for tech support from me or one of the DCs every time he switches his bloody ipad to flight mode or similar!!

Dad is 90 and his dw 92 - history books, history magazine subscription, last year we got them a hamper of local stuff (she's French so loves all that). Nice whisky?

It's hard, isn't it?

mumontherun14 · 09/11/2018 15:29

I buy a few hamper kits off Ebay and make them up for my DH's grandad and my mum & dad. For DH grandad he loves gardening so I got him tools, gloves, bulbs, seeds etc and put it in the hamper with socks, chocolates and nice biscuits. He loved it. This year I was thinking of making him a photo calendar with all his grandchildren for each month of I can get myself organised to dig out all the photo's! Snapfish do nice photo gifts x

Annandale · 09/11/2018 15:33

Socks - but Brora cashmere (£35?) Izzy Lane bedsocks (£22) or Bridgedale merino walking socks.

Penhaligan's stuff for that Jermyn Street vibe.

AlexaAmbidextra · 10/11/2018 05:36

In desperation one year I bought my old Dad a fleece gilet. He would never wear jumpers/cardigans but absolutely loved this. He wore it all the time indoors and it kept him snug under his coat when he went out in cold weather. It was such a successful gift that I just replaced it every year.

diodon · 10/11/2018 05:49

Thanks @greylady that puzzle book will be perfect for my mid-70s FIL.

Flamingoose · 10/11/2018 05:55

One of those calendars you make up with photos of all the kids / grandkids? Snapfish or similar do them.
