Gifts for baby sibling who already has loads of hand me downs??

I’m struggling to think of what to get for DD who will be 10 months old at Christmas. She has a 4yo sister so already has a ton of baby & toddler toys and books ready to be handed down. She’s also got plenty of her own cuddly toys and special things like money box etc. as she recently received some very kind baptism gifts. I’d wrap up the old baby toys but unfortunately eldest DD still remembers them and she’s getting very concerned that Santa won’t know what baby sister wants as she can’t talk yet and will baby sister get any presents?!!

I need ideas for Santa, me & DH, and grandma (I suggested Clark’s shoe vouchers, bibs, sleepsuits, clothes and premium bonds but she likes to do a big pile of what she calls ‘proper’ presents and after 4 years of trying to fight it I’ve given up trying!)

Any ideas??

We're in a similar situation although our eldest is only just two. I've suggested a Lamaze toy for her, the flappy dragon is good! Also got her a baby black and white book, other than that I'm a bit stuck!

We were on this position a few years ago, I got some really nice versions of stuff I'd probably buy anyway, like cups and bowls etc and a mini princess dress up costume becausethats what dd1 liked and thought her sister should have. I believe Disney store do them in baby sizes.

We bought our youngest a train set. He was too young for it but we thought there was no harm in establishing that one of the "big" toys was his, not the eldest's, even if he had to grow into it. In practice they shared of course, but we felt it was important that he had ultimate claim on some of the shared toys. It was then added to in later birthdays as he grew into it. Also your DD will have a long stretch between birthday and next Christmas so buy ahead suitable toys for older one year olds too.

I agree with Toasty that her own special plate, cutlery etc can be nice. My 9 year old still has his special spoon and melamine plate!

Still we didn't have a grandma buying piles of presents - ours just them a top or something. I imagine after 4 birthdays and 4 Christmases of that you are well supplied with toys!

Things with their name on that big sibling can’t steal.

Character bedding and backpack.

WellTidy · 07/11/2018 17:17

ANything with their name on! Also, things for their room is a nice idea. Maybe a door plaque, wall stickers, a sign, lights, bedding , book case or shelves etc. Gltc has some lively more unusual novelty shelving units which look like a gift, not just a practical item.

Bath toys? I’m regularly culling them as they go all mouldy and horrible which leaves room for replacements.

WellTidy · 07/11/2018 17:19

ALso, bath toys. Tomy does a rocket which is lovely.

A toy which you may not have is tomy toomies pic and pop walker, which really amused my DS at this age.

A bubble machine.
A wigwam, or tent, that can be put up indoors until the weather gets warmer.
The latest "That's Not My ......." book, as in one your older DD won't already have.

Squeaky Eggs.

My nephew is obsessed with them.

AvoidingDM · 08/11/2018 06:26

New books- you'll be bored reading same stuff even if LO isn't

Additional items for stuff you already have ie extra Toot-toot cars, duplo, trains.

New scooter if oldest is still using theirs
Replace any toys that have been broken or damaged

Replacement crayons

I will have a 10mo and 4yo at Christmas. The 10mo is getting various bits to complement toys we already have (bits of Grimms and Grapat open ended wooden toys), clothes, books and a bib from us. Grandparents want to a do a big present so are getting a walker. We are going to give away the walker they got DS1 because we don't need two.

That really does sound like buying for the sake of it. Would they not rather put money in DCs bank or get a voucher for clarks to buy first shoes or something?

Some good ideas here! I hadn’t thought of bath toys but yeah they do get pretty grim and need replacing...

How about a waterproof snow suit or a nice fluffy all in one?

Christmas decorations/toys
A nice nativity set they can play with when they’re older
Bedding would work well - you can keep it until it’s needed
Pyjamas (we can never have enough)

Do you do anything crafty? I’m making ds2 a jumper this year (I’ve already planned making teddy bears for both boys for next Christmas!)
