Let’s talk wrapping paper

I’m always overwhelmed by the choice of wrapping paper in the shops. Each year I spend ages deliberating and often just end up getting annoyed and grabbing some random packs from by the tills.

I just wondered what everyone else does? Do you follow a theme? Different paper for different people?

I’m planning a trip to my nearest John Lewis next week as they have some very pretty paper online and I quite fancy a mooch around their Christmas department

Any special tips on wrapping gratefully received too!

I follow a theme for gifts that are going under my tree (they need to look nice with my tree colours) but gifts that are not going under the tree can be wrapped in anything though I try to pick nice paper.
I haven’t found any paper yet this year, I looked in Morrisons earlier and all theirs seems to be white with glitter.

I normally just buy loads of whatever paper, and use a single paper for each person. This year I'm attempting to actually make my presents look nice, so I've got a selection of red, tartan and stage themed papers.

svengoren10 · 07/11/2018 14:07

I've just bought mine this morning. ALWAYS buy M&S wrapping paper. Buy a big 14m roll for all the kids presents then buy the nicer 4m rolls for adults presents for under the tree

han01uk · 07/11/2018 14:08

I also usually buy a colour theme, but having read that no wrapping paper can be recycled I might go natural this year....brown paper, hessian bow and a leaf sprig!

LockedOutOfMN · 07/11/2018 14:16

I try to use gift bags that can be reused as I consider them slightly less wasteful/environmentally damaging. Also, I hate wrapping and am crap at it. The DCs' gifts go in their cloth stocking and their cloth bag for the larger gift(s), which we reuse each year. Their gifts aren't wrapped beyond a bit of tissue for anything delicate and fragile (which we also reuse).

I do have a roll of Christmas paper that I bought 2 Christmasses ago, when that runs out I'll switch to brown paper or something that is definitely recyclable.

vodkaanddietcokeplease · 07/11/2018 14:16

I bought red and gold paper/gift bags in the sale last year so I'm rolling with that!
Just need to get some Santa paper for the kids but I'll just grab some when I'm next in town from Wilko or somewhere...

PartridgeJoan · 07/11/2018 14:21

I usually get really into wrapping and go with a theme that matches our tree decorations (since I usually wrap early so they're sat under there for a while!).

I've just discovered that wrapping paper isn't recyclable so this year I'm going for brown paper with decorative ribbons and tags. I've seen some beautiful presents on Pinterest and I think (hope) they will look just as nice!

Bumbumtaloo · 07/11/2018 14:24

Usually I buy different paper for each person but all part of the same theme - for an example a 3 roll pack. But this year I have actually bought gift tags, for the first time in years and have just bought two different papers for the adults. For our DD’s I have kept with a different paper for each of them (we have 2 DD’s). I only buy for my friends DC and they have birthdays before Christmas and so I literally hand their mum the presents I have bought and she decides what to give them for birthday/Christmas and wraps them.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 07/11/2018 14:24

I buy brown parcel paper that can easily be recycled.

Lovemusic33 · 07/11/2018 14:28

The range are selling rolls of brown paper for a good price. I like the idea of brown paper and ribbon/string but I like pretty bright paper for the kids presents.

I've always colour coded my DC's presents & just use whatever nice paper I have for everyone else but like loads of other posters I'm switching to brown paper.

This year I'm using up the paper I already have & then next year I'll get brown paper & may use colour coded stickers or ribbons for my DC.

I actually love the look of brown paper so quite looking firward to starting with that.

My DB uses newspaper & string & it's looks brilliant! Him & his DW are very artistic so theirs look like something off pinterest.

GiantKitten · 07/11/2018 14:40

Paper that's just printed can be recycled. It's the foil/plastic/glitter kind that can't (& the brown of course).

GiantKitten · 07/11/2018 14:41

OOps, sorry, brown CAN be Blush

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 07/11/2018 14:42

I either use up ones I've collected or left over (often for stocking)

Then I use brown paper and I try to wrap nicely and sometimes get creative when I have the time with labels or ribbons 🎀

RiverTam · 07/11/2018 14:43

We have a random selection of whatever we like the look of. Never really expensive stiff thick paper as it's much hardly to wrap and you have to use masses of sellotape to get it to stick down.

Santa always uses different wrapping paper, though

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 07/11/2018 14:45

@RiverTam

Oh gosh I was asked last year why I had the exact same paper as Santa 🎅

I quickly replied "he gets so much that he left me some of his spare as I had no time to buy any this year, how kind of Santa 😅"

Figmentofimagination · 07/11/2018 14:46

Red, green or gold paper for my parents and sister, they have a colour scheme for their trees so I always stick with that for them. Nice festive paper that isn't too garish for all other adults. Bright fun paper for children. Santa has his own roll for the 1 present he brings every year. No glitter paper as it gets everywhere and is really hard to stick tape on. Also buy lots of gift bags for hard to wrap presents, and reuse them if possible every year. Usually buy gift bags from card factory as I like their different coloured same pattern bags that are on offer.

PhilomenaButterfly · 07/11/2018 14:48

I have 2 different types. One from us and one from Father Christmas. 🎅

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 07/11/2018 14:49

I buy one enormous fat roll of fairly plain paper from Costco, eg gold embossed paper, and a big box of bows and ribbons to tart it up.

Plipplops · 07/11/2018 14:49

We're going with a big roll of brown paper and going to potato stamp it with stars/snowballs/Christmas trees with white poster paint. I like the idea that t's recycled paper to begin with and also that it's easily recycled afterwards.

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/11/2018 14:52

We aim for one paper per person if it goes under the tree, however, we're going to use what we have and then make sure whatever we use can be recycled. We also have a stash of gift bags that hopefully rotate around the family, I always reuse mine.

BillyAndTheSillies · 07/11/2018 14:56

Last few years we've got our wrapping paper from Matalan. We've found the quality amazing, Usually buy three packs of three to stick to a theme.
That includes about 20 rolls of identical wrapping paper bought last year to keep the magic of Father Christmas alive for DS for the next few years.

Ploppymoodypants · 07/11/2018 15:00

Another one who has gone with the brown paper and raffia to save the environment. I used the previous years Christmas cards as labels. (Cut up obviously) and have some Christmassy style ink stamps to jazz it up a bit. They look lovely and I can’t wait to have them under the tree.

Ggirl27 · 07/11/2018 15:37

Father Christmas wraps my DCs presents in different paper so there is no confusion as to who each present belongs to, a different design for each DC. Family get different paper entirely so my DCs don't guess that Father Christmas is me! I get all wrapping paper from CostCo in huge rolls which last a few years, it's good quality which make wrapping easier and I always go for red green and gold which is the most Christmassy to me.
