My 2 year old loves watching YouTube kids on my phone in the car. It's light and easy for her to use.She is a nightmare in the car. I was thinking of getting something that she can access easily that can have songs and short videos she can access. I was wondering what people could recommend.

Kindle Fire is generally the one people recommend on here, and that's what we've been looking at. I wouldn't bother with the kids one, just buy the normal one and a kid proof case. They're normally reduced for black Friday.

I would recommend a iPad. Our 5year old & 3year old and 2 year old use them with ease. We lock it down with parental locks and guided access so they only can use you tube kids. The older they get, the more we will unlock. This also covers volume, other wise they would blast it out and drive you up the wall.
Another plus side is with our apple family sharing, means they all can download apps when they get older, we would get a notification and either grant it or decline it on our mobile.
Also their emails are set up for them ready for later life.
Also a chunky rubber case to protect the pad and a good quality screen protector. Their screen protectors have cracks but the main screen under is good as new.

Ooh good thread op hope you don't mind if I stick around and see the responses too?
Looking to buy DS(3yo) one for Christmas but and iPad is definitely out of our price range, so far I think we're looking at the Amazon fire kids one...

Stupid question but with the iPad how do you get internet access in the car? Is there something you can get?

There are little portable WiFi devices you can buy but they can end up costly. If you have hotspot allowance included on your phone contract I would just use that.

You'd need 3G, which I think you have to pay for on a monthly SIM only basis (could be wrong, I don't have 3G on mine). If you have Netflix though you can download things when you're on WiFi that she can then watch in the car without internet.

Amazon fire is fantastic. Usually get for around 30 on black friday. You can transfer videos etc into it as well

floatingcloud · 05/11/2018 13:28

Yes Wi-fi dongles do work but do add a extra monthly outgoing.
We use our Netflix account for the car. At home you can download episodes, for example 10 episodes of peppa pig. Once downloaded onto the iPad, it's available as offline content on the Netflix app. No Wi-fi needed in car. There is a limit to devices and episodes as per Netflix rules. But worked for us and covers most car journeys. Content can be changed as and when you want when at home.

You can't get YouTube apps on an amazon thingy.

I've got my son a Samsung tab a 7, it came free with a phone upgrade but is £106 on amazon. It's doing well so far!

Imustbemad00 · 06/11/2018 23:59

You can get YouTube vids on the amazon one. You just have to go through the parent profile and add them to your child’s account. They are really good. And I’d get the kids one for the 2 year warranty and access to all the kids stuff for free for 2 years.

Imustbemad00 · 06/11/2018 23:59

Got it for around £70 last Black Friday

KC225 · 07/11/2018 03:08

A tablet for a toddler?

That is so sad.

GinIsIn · 07/11/2018 10:26

@KC225 would you say it’s more, or less sad than coming on a thread with a very clear title, purely to be unpleasant...? Hmm

GinIsIn · 07/11/2018 10:26

OP, the Amazon kids tablet has one massive advantage over all the others - they have a no questions asked replacement policy!!

BertieBotts · 07/11/2018 10:29

Otterbox cases are toddler proof. If it is just for the car a cheap second hand DVD Player might be a better bet. Or you could stream the Internet from your phone and connect using WiFi. Should be called Hotspot in the settings, try it out with a second phone.

I also recommend the Amazon fire tablet. They are normally around £30 on black Friday. You can download episodes onto it or buy an sd card and put films on. There's loads of great child friendly games and the parent lock features are fantastic.

KC We use them at the nursery i work at both for observations and for children to explore ICT which is am area of learning we have to cover in the EYFS. I work with 2, 3 and 4 year olds and as long as there are clear boundaries and time limits (we use sand timers - you can get 3, 5 and 10 mins ones) they can be a valuable tool to aid development. They take photos, learn to take turns playing games, and look at things of interest. A video of a volcano is much more interesting than a photograph, seeing the royal wedding sparked interest and influenced their play. As long as a tablet isn't used as a babysitter or in place of interaction they are a fantastic educational resource for our children growing up in a technological world.

My dds have had them since around 4 and at 10 and just turned 6 they are still going strong and are great for them to look up things for homework, practise phonics and times tables. Plus they play games and chill out after a long day like I do reading mumsnet or playing candy crush on my phone!
