I read a lot and my house is slowly filling with books. I’ve always thought I would miss the feel of a book and that I’d find the light from an e-reader dazzling but I’m tempted by the prices of e books and crowded book shelves. Thinking of asking Hubby for one for Christmas. Is there any recommendations on what to get? TIA

I have a kindle paperwhite and I love it. In no way does it replace real books but it's very handy for holidays, reading in bed and travelling. It has an adjustable light which can be set very low and it doesn't tire your eyes the way that a phone or tablet screen would.

I love my Kindle Paperwhite and it goes everywhere with me.

I do still love 'proper' books and spend time browsing Waterstones but the Kindle wins for convenience.

Oh god I love my paperwhite so much. I read a lot and we just don't have the space for all the books! Also kindle books are cheeper.

The light doesn't bother me at night you can turn the brightness down if you need to but it's not a blue light so it won't keep you up.

I carry my kindle in my handbag for reading at breaks at work. It is great. I couldn't be without a real book, though. I have the paperwhite and it is great.

I love my kindle touch. Its not a backlit one just looks like a book page but with adjustable font sizes and a lot lighter

As I have just said on another thread, I swore I would never have one but 5 years ago bought a Kindle paperwhite. Reasons being, my house just couldn’t take any more books and I hate to throw them away, we live outside the UK and had a very limited range of English language books, I thought it may be better than carrying a book in my bag, 6 books on holiday etc.

I love it, and use it everyday, if it broke I would be lost!!! Main advantages are being able to buy a new book at any time, as long as you have WiFi and having 300 books in your handbag. Personally I would buy a backlit one, you can read in any light, it really isn’t too dazzling and you can adjust the brightness according to your preference

I have a Kindle Paper white and I love it. I read the odd physical book but my Kindle wins hands down. I turn my bedside light off and just use the light from the kindle, turn it down so it's not too bright. It's great that you can lie in bed and buy a new book when you want to.
Don't hesitate.

Joanne1991 · 05/11/2018 00:06

I got my Kindle 2 year ago and I love it but I still buy the odd hardback or paperback book but the kindle wins every time especially for travelling in the car or on a plane but mine came in handy for the hospital

The only downside is if you are reading books with pictures, because the pictures are all at the end. I find that irritating when reading reference books.

Theworldisfullofgs · 05/11/2018 07:22

Kindle paperwhite. Love it.

Recent book had pictures where they are in the book. Travellers to the Third Reich btw - v good.

Still buy real books but these tend to only be non fiction now.

hugoagogo · 05/11/2018 07:26

I have a nook which is rather ancient now, but still going strong even though barnes and noble no longer support them in the uk.
Everyone tells me that Kindles are great, but I am put off by being tied to amazon for everything.
I like being able to buy books from other sites and borrow them for free from libraries.

Another vote for the Paperwhite.

Cutesbabasmummy · 05/11/2018 09:31

Absolutely love my paperwhite. It's my second kindle after my original Kindle keyboard gave up.

burnedout · 05/11/2018 09:42

Another vote from me. I also resisted Kindle for many years but am now a convert. I have the Kindle Oasis which is great, though possibly not worth the extra money over the Paperwhite. Pros of Oasis: metal, looks and feels high-end. Cons: can be slippery, asymmetrical, more expensive. I thought I'd use the Bluetooth audio function but I never do. Audible is exclusively from my mobile and that works fine.

Almostthere15 · 05/11/2018 09:51

I love my paperwhite. I hesitated after I broke an earlier generation model to go with paperwhite because it felt so much more expensive but it was worth it.

Spam88 · 05/11/2018 10:37

Bloody love my kindle. I'd definitely go for one with the light. They're not backlit, they're sort of lit from the side across the screen, so it's not dazzling in any way, doesn't tire your eyes or keep you awake, and is still perfectly visible in bright sunlight. I have the voyage which I don't think they do any more, that was the top of the range one before the oasis. I went for that over the paperwhite because I wanted to press the side rather than the screen to turn the page because I was used to the original keyboard version with buttons on the side. FWIW, there was nothing wrong with the old one, I just wanted a shiny new one. It's still going strong 7 years later.

I never thought I’d buy an e-reader because I love the feel of books. I have insomnia and other mental health issues and was advised by my psychiatrist to get back into reading, I had lost interest, for something for me. To kill to birds with one stone, so to speak, DH bought me a paperwhite for Christmas, I chose one from Amazon Warehouse as it was about £30 cheaper, it said it was used in excellent condition but when it arrived it didn’t look like it had even been touched. I absolutely love it and have really got back into reading. I love that I can read in the middle of the night without putting any lights on. I would definitely get one.
