I’ve already posted this in Chat but, unsurprisingly, have only had one response to my very dull question!!! My daughter’s boyfriend is doing a charity bike ride from London to Paris in the new year and needs a helmet. I’d like to buy him one for Christmas but have no idea where to start. Money is limited to around £30 (ish) I want to get a safe one but don’t even know if a decent one is available at that price. Any help would be gratefully received.

Try Go Outdoors, the staff in my local one are very helpful

Or Halfords.

Raera · 03/11/2018 11:56

PS he'll need to try it on, a good fit is important

Really useful advice, thank you!!

I think I would buy him something else to be honest. A cycle helmet needs to be fitted.

There are plenty of other cycling things you could buy though, tops, gloves, socks, water cups etc

I have a cyclist for a Dh who often does long distance bike rides, he recommend chamois cream (helps prevent chafing!!)

Bearbehind · 03/11/2018 12:44

Surely if he’s doing the ride in the new year he is training now so has a helmet already or needs it before Christmas?

It’s a nice thought but I’d choose something else.

Stompythedinosaur · 03/11/2018 13:03

Surely he'll need the helmet before Xmas for training?

plymouthmaid · 03/11/2018 13:23

Any suggestions as to accessories I could buy? Chafing cream in my amazon basket, thanks!!

Waterproof things for over trainers are a game changer!

Go to a good independent bike store, tell them you budget and who it’s for and they will quite happily help you spend it.

Assistants in independent cycling stores are generally incredibly enthusiastic and helpful.

However as suggestions you could buy:

Gloves
A skull cap for under his helmet
Fold up waterproof
Gilet
Cycling top
Arm warmers
Over shoes
Socks
Neck buff (it’s a circular scarf thing)
An emergency identity bracelet
Mini pump or CO2 canisters
Energy gels
Chamois Butter
Tool pouch
Water bottles

Gore tech gloves
Arm warmer sleeves
Buff
