I'm 23 and this is the year my mum is toning it down (will probs still be around £500 + gifts for DP)

TheWiseWomansFear · 03/11/2018 18:41

If money was tight though I'd still be very happy with £50 or under, it's the thought

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/11/2018 19:42

Toning it down to £500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Justabadwife · 03/11/2018 21:18

I don't think my mum toned down my presents and I'm 27 we just don't get loads to open on Xmas day anymore. She spreads it out.
She said last Xmas she would get me 2 big ticket items which we got part way through the year.

Wow this thread is eye opening! The whole of Christmas including the meat and presents for 15 people, decorations etc costs us c. £900 and I thought that was a lot!

woodhill · 04/11/2018 11:39

I usually spend £100 on each dc but now there are OH, this incorporates that amount.

If they wanted a bigger present I will combine it with birthday.

Not really. The kids used to get maybe 400£ of stuff each when younger but now want apple laptops / iPhones / cars etc it is significantly more. Maybe 3-5x the cost.

Ragwort · 04/11/2018 17:01

Just because your DC ‘want’ a car surely it doesn’t mean you buy them one? Shock I can’t believe what I read on here sometimes.

Lovemusic33 · 04/11/2018 21:46

Ragwort I’m shocked too. My parents stopped spending money on me when I started working (18). I bought my own first car, paid for my own phone and clothes.

I’m shocked at the amount of people saying they spend £400+ on there grown up kids. I know things are harder these days and the cost of living is high but buying them cars and laptops when they are in there 20’s seems crazy to me. My dd will probably go to uni and I will do what I can to support her but I won’t be buying her cars or laptops for Christmas.
