I am looking to buy a few board games for xmas that we can all play as a family. The kids are 6 and 3. Any ideas of things to suit us all? We have hungry hippos, mouse trap that can bugger off back to the atticfrustration and loads of orchard games.

Dobble (is a junior version) and UNO are card based family games.

Mine have enjoyed the junior versions of: Monopoly, Cleudo and Game of Life.

Never heard of Dobble. Would a 3 yr old understand uno?

Dobble is fab-have played with people from 3 to 95!

Tumbling monkeys is always a winner here. And old fashioned card games - snap, snap jack, old maid, go fish, etc.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 28/10/2018 21:02

Trouble! Simple, fast and the popper thing is loads of fun and avoids the inevitable argument about who threw the dice too soft / half way across the room etc.

Crocodile Dentist is a winner here; no batteries, no loose parts make it even better.

We love the Orchard Toys range as well. There’s a post box game, a caterpillar game and a Dinosaur Lotto game that keep my 3 year olds and my 5 year old busy (plus me, I’m 38!).

Aldi had a great magnetic fishing game in their toy event last week, I think Lidl have something similar from this Thursday.

Not quite board games but connect 4/ guess who are great imo!

Pictionary? Not a board game but charades? Napoleon is brilliant is the 3 year old can read.

Dixit is fabulous and offers a real level playing field for all ages

UNO is great, suitable from around 2.5, with a bit of help of course. Mine played a lot of cards too at that age, so portable! Old fashioned games liked ludo, frustration etc with the dice inside the popper in the middle. Think they were about 4 before they got the hang of cluedo but you could try. Check out charity shops, you never know what you will unearth

Qwirkle is fun for all ages.

My 3 year old loves junior Uno and Dobble, would definitely agree with pp! We also enjoy Monza, but she definitely has to be in the right mood - boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/4209/monza.

DS2 (2.5) adores Uno (we play open hands, clearly!). Monopoly Deal has been a huge success here with DS1 (6) although a 3 year old would need to play with someone.

Cooperative games are good at that age. We played Forbidden Island at a friend’s house recently and that went down well.

rosablue · 28/10/2018 22:00

Labyrinth here was the big hit from age 5 up so might be too old for 3 yr old. Ds2 has regularly been the winner when he is the youngest through to ages of 80 plus. I’ve also seen the teens/20 something’s carry on playing when he’s thrashed them and gone to do something else, so they don’t need to play to humour him Grin

Pass the pigs and Yahtzee. Are also good but again might be too old for the 3 yr old.

Just seen they do Kids Dobble _ I think I'll get that for us and our nearly 4 year old.
