How many gifts do your kids get to unwrap?

AvoidingDM · 26/10/2018 09:50

I'm not interested in value just number.

I'm counting a gift as anything from a Playstation to a Selection Box.
I'm well aware people have different budgets and shop in different places.

I have a big age gap between my kids, so sticking to the same budget is pointless I'd rather aim for same number if items.

They will each have:-
2 gifts from Grandparents
5 from Aunties and Uncles.

I was thinking 5 or 6 things from us / Santa including books, main gift, selection box. Stocking will be a hand full of small things under a fiver.

pintsizeprincess · 26/10/2018 14:08

2dds , prob between 15 - 20 from santa. stocking each with mostly glittery sparkly tat and chocolate with the odd useful thing thrown in it. Also probably 6 or so each presents from family.

Alanamackree · 26/10/2018 15:19

From Santa: One big present each, five smaller presents and about nine stocking presents

1 from me/dh (probably a book)
2 from 2 sets of grandparents
4-10 from 4 sets of aunts/uncles

Potentially 22-28 counting everything. It is spread over multiple times and locations at least.

Tomboytown · 26/10/2018 15:32

A lot
But I do disguise the necessary underwear/socks etc as presents too.
Possibly 40-50 in total.
I still get about 20-30 from my parents/sibilants!
We’ve never just got one present each

Boohissmiss · 26/10/2018 15:34

Around 30 from Santa and 15 from family

Yura · 26/10/2018 15:39
  1. one from us, one from each pair of grandparents, one from
their uncle. i don’t lime mountains of stuff
Lovemusic33 · 26/10/2018 16:15

This year probably 10 maximum from me.

Relitives tend to give them cash so they don’t get much else to open but they are teens now and the presents are more expensive rather than toys. They do get a stocking but not wrapped gifts in them.

Chelseajunior · 26/10/2018 16:22

1 main present from santa
(and a stocking with approx 10)

Around 20 from us

15 from family..aunties, uncles etc.

Asj0405 · 26/10/2018 17:22

I keep it the same every year
5 from Santa
5 from us
10 stocking fillers

There's usually 10 from family and friends

We only buy 1 gift on their birthday and have a family day out so don't mind going mad at Christmas

didireallysaythat · 26/10/2018 17:41

Probably 4-5 from us, 2-3 from my brother, cards with cash from GP. Stocking maybe 5 (Santa only does shall stuff in stockings). Seems like too much but maybe I'm off the mark.

Theonewiththecat · 26/10/2018 19:09

Probably about 20 in her stocking (from FC)
And probably about 15/20 from me and DH, and another 15/20 from the rest of the family.
Not all on Xmas day though. :)

Villanellesproudmum · 26/10/2018 19:53

Usually around 10 but this year it’ll be 2 (MacBook Air and DNA genetic kits) and probably £10 from my parents and £10 from her Auntie. No other family. Mainly because the main gift is so expensive!

PodgeBod · 26/10/2018 21:32

Roughly 20 from Santa plus stocking
About 5 from in laws
About 18 from my side

So 43+stocking

Some of these they will open when they see people so it's not all on Christmas day.

RoseMartha · 26/10/2018 22:04

8 -10 small bits in stocking ie lip balm, choc coins
One main

12 from relatives

TheWiseWomansFear · 26/10/2018 22:34

I got 50-100 as a child worth 1k or more... I am realising this is unusual though ...

Lilicat1013 · 26/10/2018 23:08

My two are aged five and eight, they have additional needs though so are developmentally younger than that.

They are having a cuddly toy to take to bed on Christmas Eve, my younger son is having Skye from Paw Patrol in a pirate outfit and my older son is having the bear from 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'

The have five toys in their stocking from Father Christmas. My older son is having toy figures of various types because that's what he plays with. My younger son is having a light up toy, a wooden train, bubble timers, a set of wooden yoghurts and a beanie Everest from Paw Patrol

Under the tree they have an annual each and eight toys. Some of things under the tree are fairly cheap, the majority under £15 but they are physically bit (a marble run, a bowling set etc). My older son's main present is a Leapstart 3D and my younger son's main present is a singing Elsa doll.

They receive presents on Boxing Day from my mum and my two brothers. From other family members they receive money which is put in their savings or vouchers which are used later in the year.

Isadora2007 · 27/10/2018 01:18

I don’t have a number. Surely you buy differing amounts each year? I’ve just flicked through my Xmas eve photos from 2014-2017 and each child (4 of them) has had different sized piles each year... ranging from 8/10 plus stocking to 23/24 plus stocking.

pennygirl26 · 27/10/2018 02:48

40-50 from us. 10 to 15 from santa. Stockings with little bits in. Normally 5-6 each from my sister my mum last year for my daughter was about 10 maybe more not sure. Then my husband has his parents 2 sisters and auntie who all buy for them. Some neighbours buy also. I have about 3 or 4 cousins who buy for them aswell. So they get far to much.

pennygirl26 · 27/10/2018 02:52

We also play hunt the money but I suppose that's not a gift as such.

MrsJonesAndMe · 27/10/2018 08:09

A stocking, one or 2 from us, one from sibling to the other, one from Father Christmas and one from each set of grandparents.

So, a stocking and about 5-6 bigger things.

MissMarplesKnitting · 27/10/2018 08:28

Each child gets:

Stocking full of small bits like mini figures, hatchimals collectibles, top trumps, new colouring things, choccy etc. Probably about 8-10 items in each.

One really wanted gift from santa. We remind them santa had a lot of kids to buy for, so he has a budget per child and anything more than that Mummies and Daddies have to add to it and send the extra money. This stops them demanding the world on a stick because it's from Santa. This is the gift they really, really want. Santa normally adds a soft toy too.

About 5 from us. This is one 'big ticket' or so item like one of the larger Lego sets or Sylvanian house type things, a smaller toy or two plus a book, new onesie, and usually a game.

Then about 5 from relatives (small family!)

I try not to go overboard....

AvoidingDM · 27/10/2018 16:44

I don’t have a number. Surely you buy differing amounts each year?

I used to buy whatever i thought, no real limit. Yes it varied every year. But combination of factors, second child, house overflowing with stuff, oldest wanting more expensive things, no ideas what to buy youngest (partly because of overbuying for oldest and hand me downs. I'm making an attempt to cut back what I buy, cut back what ends up at the charity shop after 18mths, so I'm trying to keep the excitment without the mountain of stuff.

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 27/10/2018 17:18

I don't think a number from others really helps you in that regard though does it? I mean sure, some people will wrap and count every single item down to bath bomb, sheet of stickers etc and others (me!) would count a bundle of books as one gift iyswim. There's huge variation on this thread alone but I doubt there's much correlation between amount of gifts and excitement levels.

Posters tend to be pretty good with suggestions if you post age, interests, budget?

AvoidingDM · 27/10/2018 17:56

As I said in the opening post. I was curious as to the actual number of things. It seems that cutting back to having a just a dozen things to unwrap seems on the low side of average. It appears that the average on here seems to be around 20. Some much less, some much more.

I don't want Christmas morning to have an anticlimactic feeling - was that it!

Admittedly I wouldn't think to split sets of books. I've a friend whos 'elves' have fun mixing up socks Grin so may well steal that idea. But I can also add in some non-bulky DVD's, clothes and other smaller things make the opening phase last a bit longer to bulk up their piles.

Depending on what they like you could consider useful but still nice items? DD has just turned 9 and isn't hugely into toys now so we're finding we have to think outside the box a bit. Thankfully she's still mad about lego elves so we've got a large one as her "main" gift but some other things we've bought (that may or may not be appropriate for yours):

She's mad about elephants, I got a lovely elephant cushion for her room. It also happens to be yellow which is her favorite colour.

She's a voracious reader (I mentioned a pile of books) and just yesterday I spotted metal elephant bookends. In yellow Grin! The books and bookendss will go in her room too.

The bundle of books will be put inside some pretty new storage boxes which will be wrapped. She has lots of craft and writing stuff so could do with the extra storage boxes which are really cute and I know she'll love.

So those are useful gifts for her room and wouldn't be the most exciting gifts to some but DD will absolutely love them because they're all specific to her likes and interests Smile.
