Do your decorations match your home decor? I have a dilemma!

I can't believe I am going to ask this but I am!Blush Grin

Do you make sure your Xmas decs and home decor to match? If so how do you the it in?

This year we've decorated and after years of plain and sensible went a bit crazy and now have a tropical rainforest/jungle theme in our lounge diner. Plain white walls, wood floors, greige sofa. I have dull gold pinepple chandalier and lamp as well. I love it but it's very different to the old white walls and plain grey curtains. Its bright and full on!!

I'm now worried that my Christmas decorations won't match and make the room look a bit too busy.

Last year we splashed out on a snowy tree with red berries and cones. It cost £££ but is stunning. We bought lots of green and gold decs too.

I also have alot of the red and white Scandinavian style decs but can't see they will work now.

How would you decorate for Christmas? I'm really stuck. Ive had a look at pinterest but theres not much inspiration. Can anyone help me with some ideas. Any advice or tips appreciated.

Dare I say it but I've considered buying plain red curtains and then getting red Xmas themed cushions etc. I know thus is a bit extreme. I can't really afford to do this tbh. We've spent all year renovating downstairs and literally only hung the dining room curtains up 2 weeks ago. I think dh would go mad if I did a change of soft furnishings for Xmas.
I've attached some pics of the fabric the curtains cushions and dining room seat pads are made from so you can see what I'm up against!!

Why don't you just have your tree bare with clear lights ?it will still look nice love your decor btw it's gorgeous

TheWoollybacksWife · 25/10/2018 17:45

Green and gold would look lovely with those soft furnishings and your tree sounds lovely. When you have the funds you could perhaps add decorations in what I call peacock colours - teal, fuchsia and purple along with the green and gold.

My decorations do match but that's more by luck than good judgment as my soft furnishings are red/cream/grey and my tree is red/gold/ivory.

SixToEightInchesOfSnow · 25/10/2018 17:48

I’d lose the Scandi stuff and just go with green and gold. When we moved 3 years ago, we did change all our decorations and buy a bigger tree and we have a gorgeous bay window now and our living room is more traditional. DS has the old tree and decorations in his bedroom.

Mrsfussypants1 · 25/10/2018 17:55

Oh that looks lovely. I had a similar dilemma, we've done the same as we've moved into our new home and its very sleek and modern. So it was goodbye to our Scandi chic theme tree and time for something colourful and different. I think a tree decorated in emerald or other shades of rich green, or golds. perhaps some peacocks. Have you had a look at john lewis, next and marks and spencers Christmas department. They all have some themes for the year to give inspiration. Matalan, wilko, asda are good for that too. And Sainsbury's do good decorations. I have to admit my guilty pleasure has been watching YouTube videos of people decorating there trees or showing you Christmas decor departments. We've gone for the opposite of our minamilist scandi, and to be honest I'm bored of seeing it in everyone's homes, and gone for a rainbow theme and I treat myself to a fun collection of glass decorations from paperchase, marks and spencer and john lewis. A recreation of childhood trees, and after seeing Nexts Christmas tree in window adored with multicoulred lights I'm very tempted to follow suit as there seems to be a rival of them.

youarenotkiddingme · 25/10/2018 18:07

Yep - my tree secs match my lounge/diner decor. And my wrapper paper and bows all match too including my Christmas plates and table cloth etc.

Therefore Xmas round my way is teal and pink with cream and chocolate brown thrown in.

It's not as awful as it sounds 😂😂

Knittedfairies · 25/10/2018 18:38

I’d go with your green and gold decorations, and you could possibly add a few teal bits. It will look wonderful!

Ricekrispie22 · 25/10/2018 18:58

First world problem!

FireflyGirl · 25/10/2018 19:14

I have dull gold pineapple chandelier and lamp

When I grow up, I want to be like CartwheelCath! I am in awe, your living room sounds amazing!

We still have the neutral walls and curtains because neither of us has any inspiration about interior decoration, so my Christmas decorations have nothing to match and I can go mad!

Course, if you were really trying to match your decor, you'd have a palm tree... Grin

Idontmeanto · 25/10/2018 19:30

Is it really sad of me to have to have made my lounge red and beige so it goes with red and gold Christmas decorations?

Pinkyponkcustard · 25/10/2018 19:41

Ish - mercury glass gold and vintage baubles. My living room has mid century patterned curtains though so it compliments in style rather than colour.

Defo green and gold with those colours, could you have another tree in another room to show off your Scandi treasures?

CartwheelCath · 25/10/2018 20:06

Thank you everyone and yes I know this is a first world problem!!

I saw some peacock coloured decorations somewhere the other day and did wonder if I might add a few to the greens and golds and see what it lools like. Your replies have given me the confidence to stick with my green and gold but maybe add some peacock colours too.

We've always lived in army housing with magnolia walls and unmatching carpets and hideous curtains until we moved here into our own home 3 years ago. I 've always had neutral and plain so this new look is a bit wild for me. Poor dh is still adjustingGrin although I love the vibrancy of it I just suddenly had a OMG what about Xmas moment!! So thank you for your help.

We are almost finished decorating another small room downstairs that we are putting a sofa bed and the boys (teens) PlayStation in. I think I might get away with my Scandinavian style decs in there.

Yes.
A random assortment of gifted/homemade/multicoloured loveliness with a story behind most of them.
I realise I don't fit in here, I'll leave now.

CartwheelCath · 25/10/2018 20:25

Actually Mokepon you do belong here. I know how poncey I soundBlush. I'm just nervous having so much pattern that's why I was asking.
Alot of my decs have sentimental meaning.
Last year was the first year I bought new baubles that matched and a new tree in 15 years.
Our old tree still went up last year in our hallway with all the kids decorations on it as always (was always in the lounge). It's got homemade stuff a bit crumpled now and stuff my brood made at school when small. Despite being 20 19 and 17 they still want to hang their Thomas the Tank, Disney Princesses etc in the tree!! Nothing matches but it's a tree if memories. It worked well in our old style lounge but think I might get a headache with it and all my new patterns too!
I would never knock what anyone chooses to do. I love seeing people's decs and old decs too. I love the history and memories behind them all.
Just after many years I fancied a change last year. I spent alot of money last Xmas on a theme then had a bit of a panic when i realised id also spent a fortune decorating my living room (I'm 45 and it's my first time being able to) and it might look an awful clash!! But yes I agree it's poncey!!GrinBlush

As I said in my OP- I can't believe I'm asking this!!

It all works together and I choose paint colours depending on the Christmas decorations I like which is possibly taking things a little far.

I absolutely second the peacock colours for your tree and your home is lovely.

Mokepon · 25/10/2018 20:33

Ah I see what I wrote sounds as though I'm being a bit judgy, sorry, it wasn't meant like that.
I also love all the decorations, it's just that ours are a bit organic.
I totally let the dcs have free rein, maybe in another 10 years I'll get to have lovely coords but for now its homemade paper chains and an invisible tree ( can never see it because of all the stuff on it!).

Cherulewis · 26/10/2018 09:44

I have changed my decorations over the years, I had silver and navy blue back in the 90's, a definite purple phase at one stage, then had chocolate, gold and bronze when I had a brown leather sofa. Now it is white, silver and clear.

I am one of those poncetastic Christmas people who has empty boxes beautifully wrapped in silver and white complete with ribbons. All the other real ones are stashed behind Grin

The children's stockings are homemade so I chose the material that matches too, in every day life I don't even wear matching underwear so I have no idea why I do this for Christmas.

Your curtains are beautiful, greens and gold with a splash of bright peacock blue decorations would be lovely.

Lovemusic33 · 26/10/2018 16:24

I have the same dilemma, I have changed my decor this year in my living room, I have gone from pretty basic grey and red too bright pinks, orange, purple Indian/boho kind of theme. My Christmas decorations are pretty Nordic and snowy, I’m not sure they will fit my new decour but my decorations have sentimental value as well as costing me a fortune over the past 5 years. I think I’m going to just use them as it seems silly buying more.
