Christmas Tree + Toddler = Help?

Looking for some ideas on how to keep 14 month old DD away from the Christmas tree this year.

We only have a small living room, so we have a little (6 foot) half tree. It’s pretty light, and I’m preempting DD being capable of pulling it down. I know for a fact the lights and sparkles will be irresistible to her.

Any ideas for toddler proofing?

Everyone said our son would pull the tree down - he didn't! I just repeated - don't touch over and over and he didn't! I think maybe we were lucky! He's now nearly 4 and will want to "help" decorate it. We ill of course redecorate it when he's in bed!

Put the decorations and lights up high and maybe put something under to make it difficult to reach or up high. Last year we put train tracks round so daughter spent most of her time dismantling it!

  • Put the tree in the playpen if you have one, or hide it behind a piece of furniture or put it up on a table (depends how high your ceilings are);
  • Don't put any breakable/valuable/sentimental baubles on;
  • Don't put it up until very near Christmas; - - Give her her own tree to play with. You can get small fake trees for a couple of pounds, soft/unbreakable baubles;
  • Prepare to be sick of saying 'No'. You could try recording it on your phone so you just have to press a button Grin

I’d buy a smaller tree you could put on a side table that she can’t reach for this year.

We didn’t have decorations at the bottom...both my girls were desperate to pull them off. We also put cushions, basket in front of it x

This is what I’m dreading most!!!

3 kids, 1 dog and not ever had a problem. The kitten might be our undoing this year though Grin

@hedgyhoggy I was just about to say we've two toddlers and it's only ever been the cat who's got the tree over! Grin

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 26/10/2018 11:32

Hedgy I’m hoping that’s the case, but DD seems to have a homing beacon on dangerous/fragile/unstable stuff in her vicinity, and a Christmas Tree with lights will be too much to resist!

Think putting tree in the play pen or baby gate combo or behind furniture or get small tree that will go on table is best plan

We wrapped large boxes and put them around the base to stop ours getting too close! Plus only put unbreakable decorations on just in case. Seemed to work.
