I saw this on Pinterest and I'd like to play it with my family on Xmas day, there's 6 of us so I need gifts that appeal to all ranging from 3 yr old DD to 32 ye old DH (2 teenage boys and a younger boy and me also involved)

Also looking for similar fun games, currently thinking of Bingo and the big clingfilm ball of gifts game but I don't know if I'll do that as it doesn't seem very eco friendly.

I've yet to find a board game we can all play so I'm not going down that route but will have the older kids join in a game of Quirk! Before bed.

Does anyone play this game or similar?

That game is awful!

BiscuitDrama · 25/10/2018 09:32

Sorry, that was a bit harsh. It upsets me though!

I think it could be fun, if I set a timer to limit game play or a 'everyone has 10 rolls of the dice' so it's got a clear end point.

It's our first Christmas just us, no extended family and tbh I'm panicking that it won't be the same without the business of a bigger group, we also have Christmas dinner out so we won't have stuff going on in the kitchen.

I'm trying to find quick-ish games, suitable for everyone that I can pull out for entertainment.

I hope it works out for you but I imagine a 3 year old would have a hard time with giving up her gift, particularly if she likes it.

I also think it'd be hard to find gifts that could appeal to all in that range.

Maybe something consumable?

TitsalinaBumSquash · 25/10/2018 10:57

Yes I thought about chocolates or something similar.

Maybe I'll scrap the idea and think of something else, or maybe I should just stop stressing about Christmas! 😂

Obviously all the gifts were going to be in the same size boxes and wrapped so no one knows who's got what until the end and I was going to change steal to swap.

Just buy 6 gifts, keep them wrapped and then start the timer. You could also buy 6 of the same gifts and no one would know till game was over.

I was thinking of getting 6 cheap wind up racers so we can have a little race afterwards or something similar.

Wind up racers would work well as long as you got 6 different colours.

Mugglemom · 25/10/2018 11:26

Ah, well if they stay wrapped until the end, then it might work out pretty well!

A gift that is a scratch off lottery ticket, chocolate bar, and wind up racer could be good, as that's not too much money altogether in terms of expense, and it's 3 gifts in one, including another fun game and a chance to win some £!

I did a game at a birthday party once where it was similar to pass the parcel but the little prizes were all in small tins/tubs and when the music stopped you could look in and see if you wanted to keep it or carry on. If you kept it you were out of the game and the next tin came in. I think I might have had two tins going at a time. Went well.
Don't worry, I bet you'll have a great time.

We do something a bit similar with dh's family. There are 11 adults and it's all got a bit silly and excessive buying each other gifts! Everyone buys one gift to the value of twenty five pounds. They all go in the middle and everyone picks a number out the box. The person who has number one choses a gift and unwraps it. The person who gets two can then chose another gift or steal the first persons gift. Anyone who is stolen from can then replace their gift in a similar fashion (i.e steal or unwrap a new one, but they cannot steel the gift that had just been stolen from them) and so on and so forth. It is hilarious and one of my favourite parts of the day! But we do do it as all adults! Not sure if the dynamic would work with children. Beware though.....it can go on for ages!

Similar game but less upsetting.

Give everyone the same amount of wrapped sweets. Empty pot in the middle. Take in turns to roll the die.

1 - put one of your sweets in the pot
2 - put two of your sweets in the pot
3 - pass a sweet to the person on your left
4 - pass a sweet to the person on your right
5 - eat one of your sweets
6 - the central pot is emptied into your pile

Good fun. Can last as long as you like

In previous years we have embraced the German tradition of Schrottwichteln, which my brother helpfully translates as “crap elfing”. Like secret santa, but it must either be regifted or bought from a charity shop, and as tasteless and tacky as possible.

If you want a board/card game that might work for the whole family, try either Rhino Hero (a crops between Uno and Jenga!), or Dobble.

TheGhoulWhoOoOoLived · 25/10/2018 12:51

We did this game- everyone (there was 6 of us) bought 3 £1 gifts (including 2 kids) and we put them all- wrapped- in the middle.

Obviously you know what is in 2/18 but the intense swapping/stealing of the ‘interestingly wrapped gift” that everyone thought was chocolate and turned out to be incontinence pads was very funny Grin

Some were sensible, some not so but it was great fun!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 25/10/2018 13:20

Great advice thanks.

I am going to put together a little 'prize' box with Christmas cracker type tat things the kids have asked for pin (Velcro) the star on the top of the tree and snowball (marshmallows) into the hot chocolate pot (all done safely) we love a silly family game to take some time away from screens and of DD gets a bit grumpy I tell her she's on Mummy's winning team to stop the toddler tantrums, DH and the boys are a really good at fixing games now and again so she 'wins' a new hair bobble or a chocolate penny etc.

We did it as a table game a few years ago. I bought and wrapped all the presents, all relative inexpensive gifts like Christmas socks, an very random annual, fun sweets and 1 star gift I thought everyone would love. It turned out every one was trying to get one of the random cheapies. Rather than set I timer we had 3 rounds before everyone was left with their final gift. We had great fun

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 25/10/2018 20:38

I am thinking of this game too. Trick with a 3 year old is to make the gifts something she wouldn't be too attached too. I was thinking of pound shop tat, things people could wear e.f. Reindeer antlers, Christmas glasses, musical tie, flashing badge etc. A waste of money maybe but at £1 a go would be a giggle with the people we have to dinner appreciate that won't be for everyone
