Convertible bike

Hello!
I’m looking for one of those trike bike convertible things, the ones that convert from small child up to around 3/4 years old, long handle to push little one around that then comes off. No idea what the best one is to get or even if I should wait till after Christmas to get a bargain? It’ll be a birthday gift. Can anyone help please with recommendations? I hope I’m making sense! Wink

We got one for my son when he was 1. He used it until he was about 2 and a bit. I got it second hand for about £20 and I’m glad I didn’t pay more. They all do the same thing. It was a smart trike, but I’ve seen some that recline etc. None of that is needed and none of it helped him ride a bike.
As soon as he was 2 we got him a scooter, then the trike fell from favour. I guess because he was independent and fast.
At 2 and a half he got a balance bike, and by 3 he could ride a bike.

Hadn’t thought of a scooter at 2, thank you! Also the balance bike too. Flowers

Is there another bike type thing that anyone else would recommend instead? I’ve seen the little tiger, two different types. One that the seat turns round to face me when I’m pushing him. Another that looks a little more basic.
Or is there something more suitable than a smart trike? FTM and haven’t got a clue! Grin

Those trikes are pointless. Never seen a toddler looking happy on one. No suspension, uncomfortable seat. Stick to using a buggy.

I’m after something fun for him, I’ve got a good pram for him already but wanted something to play in the park on. Just not sure what to get Confused

What are the scuttle bugs like?

Scuttle bugs are great!

Smellybears · 25/10/2018 19:13

There’s a scuttle trike as well. What age have you used the scuttle bug from please?

Scuttlebug from 1, though he didn’t get good on it until about 18 months. Whizzes around on it now like a demon (age 2 and a bit)
Other son (4) still enjoys it!
Good value for money
This is the one I have- not the 4 wheeled one

I saw one the other month in home bargains, wish I’d picked it up then!! Would you recommend this over a convertible trike thing or a balance bike?

Depends how old your little one is. I wouldn’t buy a trike again I don’t think. My son did like it, but only because it made a change from a buggy. He didn’t develop any useful skills.
Scuttle big would be my first step, then balance bike (and 2 and a half) then a bike (no stabilisers... as the balance bike means they can skip that step!)

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 25/10/2018 21:51

Balance bike from about 18 months

Smellybears · 25/10/2018 22:19

It’ll be for his first birthday in January. So torn now over the scuttlebug/scramblebug/balance bike.
I’ve gone from thinking definitely buy a trike, to now definitely not a trike 😂

I wouldn't bother with the trike. We bought one brand new when DS was small and I'm sorry I wasted money on it. When he was little enough for me to be using the handle, he could still steer himself with the handlebars and it was a pain in the arse. When it was time for the handle to come off he was too big and the thing was awkward for him to go on.

I'd wait a bit and go for a scooter or an ordinary trike.

Smellybears · 25/10/2018 22:31

@SantaIsATwat that was why I was leaning toward the trike, the handle. I won’t bother with one then! Love your name by the way 😂😂
He’s getting a little sit on car thing for in the house for Christmas. After something to take him to the park with for his birthday as we go most days.

I’d highly recommend this wooden trike which converts into a balance bike...

I bought one (2nd hand) when my little one was 16 months old and he absolutely loves it!! He’s so confident on it and it will last him until he’s about 3 years old.
He started using it inside the house and now rides along beside me at my normal walking pace when we go out! It really is brilliant 😊

That looks fab! I’ve seen one called wishbone which looks very similar to that but it’s around £140 Shock I really do like the look of that, it’s good that it converts from trike to bike. Thank you!

That trike bike thing looks fab. I did buy mine a balance bike for Christmas when he was 13 months but it was too big for another 6 months. Some kids ride them earlier but he was small for his age!

Something else I've seen is a seat on a wheel with a parent handle. The kid just sits on the seat with feet on foot pegs and gets pushed along. Must be great for balance. I'll have a Google and see if I can find one as it's hard to explain.

Smellybears · 26/10/2018 14:04

That seat wheel thing sounds good! I’ll have to get googling that as well! :)

I think I have managed to find it, is it called a unirider?

OP posts:
ItWasntMeItWasIm · 26/10/2018 22:21

Yes that's it! I'm so impressed you found it with my terrible description 😄

It says age 2-5 but I would give it a try with a one year old! I bet a child using one of those would develop amazing balance.
