Christmas Box Appeal - Ideas

We are having a present appeal at work... shoe box up to paper box size... I am letting my son do this as a project to help him realise not everyone is in a position to have gifts at Christmas. So he has chosen to do his for a boy age 8-10.
Can anyone help with ideas to fill it ?

Toiletries
Notepad/puzzle book/pencils
Hat/scarf/gloves

HurricaneFliss · 24/10/2018 19:28

I think the poor boy who's going to open the box would appreciate something more exciting than a note pad and pencils.

I did a rotary shoebox for a 6 year old boy - DS is also 6.
It had toothbrush, toothpaste, shower gel, pants, socks, gloves, pencil case, coloured pencils, colouring and notebooks, stickers. All superhero type theme.
Bouncy ball, play doh, toy dinosaurs, bubbles, playing cards, clockwork toys (no batteries allowed).

Are they sent overseas or for children in the UK?

Please don't say this is for Operation Christmas Child ( The Samaritans Purse).

If so , every year there are threads about how decent people are sucked into supporting this openly evangelical organisation.
It is its lack of clarity about its evangelical nature which has prompted many complaints from parents countrywide who have been asked to participate. Many schools have decided to support different shoebox schemes after having researched this organisation . In fact I have myself participated in the past, not realising their true nature.

What many parents, schools and bodies do not know is that behind Operation Christmas Child is the American evangelical charity Samaritan's Purse, headed by Franklin Graham ( son of the evangelist Billy Graham) who is blatantly and publicly intolerant of other religions and who
also have openly homophobic beliefs.

It is documented that the shoeboxes are used as leverage to sign up recipients to the organisations " Greatest Journey" curriculum, with little regard or respect for the children's religious or cultural affiliations.

I feel that Samaritan's Purse is at best not being truthful with the British public , and at worst is guilty of perpetuating an underhand and manipulative form of evangelising children through gifts.
There are many articles available backing this up if you google but I don't know how to link,
The Humanist Life for example.

The Co op no longer support this charity, nor do DHL who originally helped distribute the boxes. My local school and the large Children's organisation I work for have also withdrawn their support after doing some basic research as did my local Tesco after i sent them some links.

Anyway I really don't want to derail this thread, just want MN ers to be able to make an informed decision on which "charities " they support.

There are many other charities who run shoebox appeals without a hidden agenda.

@HurricaneFliss maybe you're right, but I don't see you listing any suggestions?
It was only what popped into my head.

BikeRunSki · 25/10/2018 13:05

@grandadswasthatyou has said what I was going to, but far more eloquently.

BakewellGin1 · 25/10/2018 16:50

Thanks for the suggestions so far Smile No they are for charities local to us rather then a large charity. We always try to support locally such as food bank, womens refuge, local hospice xx

You should have guidelines as to where it will be sent and things you should include. Ours required a toothbrush and 100ml paste, bar soap, flannel, comb/brush, pencil(s), sharpener, eraser, 15cm ruler and pen(s) then it was up to you but nothing that needs batteries, and they went to sub Saharan Africa so not gloves! No religious items could be included as they were given out regardless of faith

Grandadwasthatyou · 25/10/2018 17:37

Operation Christmas Child boxes are indeed given out regardless of faith. The whole point is they want to evangelise the recipients using the boxes we have innocently (and in good faith ) provided!

legocardsagain · 25/10/2018 20:07

I'd like to support a shoebox appeal and so following to see if there are better suggestions of who to support.
