My Mum is easy to a degree. I often buy her make up or jewellery or give her money but wouldn’t mind something original.

My Dad I find really difficult to buy for! He’s 55, spent a lot of his life self employee, just done an MBA, wouldn’t appreciate money or anything extravagant. Last year got him a jumper and tempted to do the same but boring! A book? Boring...

Thought about air fryer for Mum and Dad as we love ours and they like kitchen gadgets (and Mum loves chips!) but they are more expensive than I remember at about £180 for the Samsung one we have.

Mother in law likes No 7 so could get her something related to that altho got her a small No 7 mascara and eye shadow gift last year. She loves her dogs.

Also it’s MIL 70th on Christmas Eve so want to get her something decent this year. Can’t think what. Maybe jewellery but not use what she wears. They don’t live close so only see her a few times a year. Thought maybe a nice scarf or shawl or something. Boring again. Obviously DH can have some input but will her, really?

FIL difficult as I don’t know. He loves fishing. He likes making chips apparently so thought maybe an air fryer for him also as I was telling him that we love making chips in ours but again they’re expensive especially to buy two!

🤔

Considered No7 or M&S advent calendar for MIL. Would a 70 year old appreciate an advent calendar? My Mum is 55 and wouldn’t appreciate it but that might not be anything to do with age!

How about some nice stationary?

www.castelliitaly.com

DoraNora · 23/10/2018 21:41

The tefal air fryer is currently around £100 in Aldi ...

GreenTulips · 23/10/2018 21:41

Tell DH to sort his parent christmas and birthday out.

Not sure why woman take over these basic tasks - they raised him, he should know what they like.

AliceRR · 23/10/2018 21:45

@Maccycheesefries I love stationery and don’t know this brand so will have a look! Not sure if MIL would like it. Will speak to DH

@DoraNora I saw that actually. Not sure what it’s like and was thinking of getting the one we have as we know it’s food but Tefal must be ok as it’s one of the most popular ones I think or even “the original”...

@GreenTulips We will probably do it together. Well, who am I kidding. I will sort out my parents and “we” will see to his 😂

@AliceRR I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea if it's any good - am just currently mulling over whether to get it myself

Maccycheesefries · 23/10/2018 21:48

It's an Italian brand and stocks grown up prints rather than the pink, fluffy unicorn crap around atm.

AliceRR · 23/10/2018 21:49

@DoraNora We have the Philips even, not Samsung and it was between that and the Tefal at the time. I might read some reviews and otherwise see if the Samsung one goes on offer for Black Friday 🤔

@Maccycheesefries I love it but then I have a Filofax (a nice one, the Heritage)

Tickets to a play/show/concert?

Voucher for afternoon tea/boat trip/whatever they might like.

Something for the garden, like an olive tree in a pot.

AliceRR · 23/10/2018 21:54

@NancyJoan That’s a good idea. We nearly got sports tickets for my Dad and brother but then dropped it into coversation (before buying) but my Dad didn’t sound interested! MIL might like something like that.

I actually thought about taking my Mum and MIL to Emmerdale set as we live near there and they both watch it but would MIL travelling here (about 100 miles away) so FIL would have to drive her and they haven’t been up here in the 11+ years I’ve been with DH. That’s another issue.

AliceRR · 23/10/2018 21:55

@NancyJoan but tickets for the in laws to go to something isn’t a bad idea

Membership to National Trust, or similar.

Subscription to a magazine. My FIL loves his Private Eye arriving every fortnight.

Ceecee18 · 23/10/2018 23:38

I've got the tefal actifry and love it. I've had it for a few years now, actually got it as a Christmas present and had one in a houseshare before that. Never had a problem with them.

AliceRR · 24/10/2018 08:08

@NancyJoan There must be a fishing subscription I can get for FIL!

@CeeCee18 Thanks that’s useful to know.

Re the question about whether a 70 year old would like the M&S advent calendar. If it helps I am that age and would absolutely love one. In fact, last year when I bought one for my daughter I bought one for me too!

AliceRR · 24/10/2018 20:09

@Meercat23 Thanks that’s helpful to know. I think maybe MIL would enjoy it.

I bought my aunt (who has everything) a title.
Basically you get a square foot of land in Scotland and the ability to use the term Lady (or lord) in front of your name legally. (And if you visit you get special perks, guided tours of the estate etc etc)

She got a kick out of getting her bank cards etc made out to Lady Fluttersaunt

AliceRR · 24/10/2018 20:24

@Flutternotsoshy how much does that cost?

OP posts:
Flutternotsoshy · 24/10/2018 20:27

They were doing them on Groupon two weeks ago for about £17 plus PNP.

There's loads of sites and various packages ranging from budget up to ridiculous depending on perks

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 24/10/2018 23:43

Fishing coaching with a professional for FIL? (DH recommends Andy May!)
