Gift experiences for my parents (late 60s)

Has anyone been on anything good but slightly unusual? Up to about £200.
My parents are in their late 60s, they wouldn’t want afternoon tea or a spa break or anything like that. I’ve previously bought them murder mysteries, alpaca walks, air shows and classical music concerts. They wouldn’t want anything food / drink related.
Any ideas? Drawing a blank this year!

Is there anything they would really like to do, an event they would like to see you could do for that budget? We bought my parents a 2 day trip to the Prix de l’Arc de Triumph, it wasn’t too expensive (cheap hotel and coach) but it was something they had always wanted to see and really enjoyed it.

My mum revealed just before her 70th that she’s always wanted to fly in a hot air balloon. So have I so we did that recently and she loved it (as did I).

Hot air balloon? ( I don't suppose they'd want a sky dive?) Wink

Would they like a zoo keeper for a day experience? Have seen people celebrating their 50th birthdays by feeding the lions, so not just for the very young.
Walking over the top of the O2 in London. I have never done it, but heard good reports.
Trip to an outdoor theatre performance in the summer, with a nice picnic.

Do they like sport? Thinking of tickets to a rugby international, or cricket test match/one day international.
Tickets to watch a TV show being recorded. These are free, but you could tie it in with a hotel break in the location.

SwizzelsFizzers · 23/10/2018 22:14

Did they enjoy the previous experiences?

Tickets to a band they loved when they were younger? There must be some good 60s and 70s rockers still on the circuit.
Who do they find funny? Tickets to a comedy gig?
Do they like gardens? Tickets to RHS Wisley, Hampton Court Flower Show or Chelsea Physic.

Escape room! We received one of these as a present for Christmas last year and it turned out to be my favourite gift! So much fun!

Annandale · 23/10/2018 23:31

Theatre tokens?

chickenchip · 23/10/2018 23:39

Tickets and a hotel for the RHS flower show?

Our DD's clubbed together last Christmas and bought us tickets to the Edinburgh Tattoo. Was fantastic and memorable, was on our bucket list and we loved it!

Muddlingalongalone · 23/10/2018 23:43

Do they have national trust/English heritage places near to them?
My mum & dad have had a fantastic year getting out and about since they got theirs.

HeddaGarbled · 23/10/2018 23:49

I second theatre tickets. But do you think they’d actually enjoy it more if you took them?

Sometimes, being given gift experiences can give you a lot of hassle organising it all but you feel obliged to do it because it was a gift. Someone I know was given a Virgin hot air balloon gift experience. They spent about 6 months phoning to try and organise it, it was repeatedly cancelled due to bad weather, or not available on the dates they could do it.

You could book the tickets, arrange the transport and lunch/dinner, organise everything on the day so they could really relax and enjoy it knowing that someone else was taking care of the logistics. Plus your company would enhance the experience for them.

Exhibition and lunch at Tate or V&A or similar?

EvaHarknessRose · 24/10/2018 22:20

Speed boat on the thames? Thames Rib are one of the operators I think. Was suprisingly good fun.
