Struggling for gift ideas for the men in my family

My Dad is in his early 70s and a carer for my Mum. He is not materialistic and enjoys gardening. Gifts that have gone well in the past include rose bushes, gardening magazine subscription, subscription to national geographic and books.

BIL very into the idea of healthy eating and food exclusion diets but rarely succeeds with them. Has very few/no interests. The last few years I have bought him hampers from yumbles.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions.

Does your dad feed the birds in the garden? Maybe a bird feeder or bird table soon with a bird food hamper and bird spotting book?

BIL, maybe a healthy eating cook book? Does he drink? Something to wear? Nice scarf for the winter?

Men are so tricky, luckily we don't bother too much with adults now, I'm just gifting food and wine.

I just do vouchers these days! Much easier and seems a little more thoughful than just money.

RHS membership
Gardening gloves
Kneeler
Trug
Choc on Choc edible garden tools!
Waterproof radio for the garden

Jackshouse · 22/10/2018 19:03

Thank you all. My Dad either has all of the above or does not like them expect the garden radio. That is a genius suggestion.

Smoothie machine for BIL?
Steamer?
Subscription for fruit and veg deliveries?
Voucher to a good organic/healthy restaurant?

As your dad is carer for your mum, what could you get to pamper him a bit?

Does your brother like cooking to go with the healthy eating or not so much? Maybe some nice cooking equipment like casserole dishes or fancy knives. I am looking at a biltong dryer for one of my relatives as he loves the snack and cooking.

Gardeners mug for your dad? They come with lid to protect the tea/coffee.

From your Dad - DVDs of gardens which he's unlikely to visit? Google gardens national trust dvd for example

Some good ideas.

BIL does not cook. He bought DS knives for Christmas last year, lucky I was able to prewarn him to not give them to DS wrapped up on Christmas Day.

He is a pseudo health nut. He would wear a tin hat if some where in the Internet it said it was healthy but he won’t have a sensible diet or do any exercise.

I will have a think again about him.

Will definitely go with a massage for Dad (parents have them through a charity service so I know he will like it) or tha garden radio.

I wouldn't use a radio in my garden as it is very inconsiderate to neighbours and I suspect/hope many people wouldn't either. if you think he would like music while gardening maybe some sort of wireless headphones?

I bought Ben Macintyre's The Spy and the Traitor for my FIL. Still only in hardback so expensive.

Pull ip bar for BIL?

Jackshouse · 27/10/2018 12:06

BrokenWing he has a corner shop. The neighbours over the back who he get on well with are quite deaf so wouldn’t notice and the other lady to the side never uses her garden.

Annandale that books sound just like his sort of thing. Sadly I don’t think BIL would appreciate anything to do with exercise.
