Homemade Christmas Tree Decorations

Hello! Looking for inspiration for homemade Christmas tree decorations I could make ( not for children) that don't look like crap 'homemade'. I have basic sewing, knitting and crochet skills but happy to try anything. They will just be for my own Christmas tree so can be fairly labour intensive, thanks in advance!

I've signed up for the little box of crochet advent box- I think it's 24 decorations to make.

NorthEndGal · 16/10/2018 12:02

@Budgieinaberet thanks! Made 65 of them, by the end my hands were shaky, but I tell myself it makes them look "rustic" haha

Last year I saw some really nice decorations on Zara (plain white baubles with gold polka dots) and just couldn't justify it!

I bought some clear glass baubles and gold, red, white and green posca pens and did a few different ones - some gold polka dots, gold stars, white 'snow' polka dots, some holly... it worked out so well and they looked so lovely on a green tree with white lights! Unfortunately I can't find any photos but it was so easy and effective!

Thanks for all the replies so far, getting some great ideas.

northendgal Those would look so nice on a Scandi/Nordic rustic themed tree!

Alanamackree love the milk maid, don't think I have enough patience to sew all 12 for this christmas though Grin.

SisterA what a good idea, definitely going to keep my eye out for some clear plain baubles, never come across posca pens before will order some on Amazon.

I made a crochet snowflake last week by following a youtube tutorial (I only learned to crochet in the summer), it was a bit fiddly but came out pretty well

Had to chop a tree in the garden but made these decorations from the branches. I plan to send them as Christmas cards. If its not to their taste they can remove the bells and ribbon and recycle/burn

I made some gingerbread a couple of years ago. Worked brilliantly, until a couple of weeks in - they got soggy, so fell off. Dog loved them thoughGrin

I didn't make them but bought them homemade at a school fair when we were living in the Middle East - there was very little in the way of Christmas decs to buy locally.

Ping pong balls, completely covered in glittery sequins fastened on with pins pushed right into the ball. Then thin gold braid fastened round twice (to make 4 quarters) and making a loop for hanging on top.

They are brilliant, they catch the light and sparkle - I still have them decades later.
Would post a pic only they are in a box somewhere with the rest of the decorations up in our black hole of a loft!

Needless to say I used to hang them fairly high up on the tree, out of reach of our dog, who might have fancied chewing them.

Have a look on Pinterest - I did something like these one year. Got sheet music from the charity shop and used that - looked lovely, I thought.
