Mummy's stocking

Been working hard on my list for EVERYONE as I do Christmas SO much better than DH he leaves all the present picking to me Hmm

And been daydreaming in the online Christmas catalogues if mums were given stockings (I know some families have them just not ours) what would be in mine? Apart from lots of miniature bottles of gin Ginwhat would everyone else on here want in their stockings?

Even as a single mum I would fill my own stocking. Dh and I just do stockings for each now, no main presents. Mine has had a book, socks, jewellery, perfume, make up, candles, bath bombs, face masks, hotel chocolat puddles in it. One year dh even managed to squish a handbag in, and I have just about managed to get a pair of slippers in his (they pretty much took up the whole stocking). I love sitting in bed opening my stocking in the morning as when we go to do the tree presents it's all about the dc and focusing on them.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/10/2018 22:55

Everyone in our house - family and any guests - always gets a stocking. Father Christmas would be in serious trouble if anyone ever got left out.

Esp. for adult guests, stockings might be quite small and consist of one Christmas sock with the other stuffed inside + a few little bits, but there will always be one.

whatwouldhappenif · 07/10/2018 23:01

We do stockings. DH’s is mainly consumables, sweets and toiletries. Mine is toiletries and a scarf or things like that but I love the idea of miniatures and will program DH this year Grin

FurryBuzzer · 07/10/2018 23:44

Oh t yes to whoever said chocolate orange! We always have chocolate oranges

Dairymilkmuncher · 08/10/2018 00:08

@TruelyTruelyScrumptious it's just not been a thing we've done in our little family, we have plenty of our own traditions and the kids get one that I stuff on Christmas Eve just not the grown ups.....yet!

I've just seen these stocking filler sections online shopping and thought they were for secret Santa or buying teachers gifts but really it's because all these women are getting lovely stockings!

I'm in two minds whether to fill one for myself from Santa or to mention to DH that's the new tradition Smile

I wonder what year was the last my mum did one for me or the last time she wrote Santa on a gift tag! I think I'm going to do these for my DC forever

I always get a stocking with food, drink and little things, DH does as well. Sometimes if I see something I really want I get it and give it to DH to add to mine. Everyone of any age gets a stocking when staying with us. We will have 8 to pull together for Xmas morning this year.

EmpressJewel · 08/10/2018 08:23

I had a stocking growing up, so when I had my own family, I knew it would be a tradition I wanted to continue.

Me and OH do stockings for each other and we add stuff like undies, chocolates, travel mug, bath bomb, gloves etc, lottery tickets.

I just give OH a list of stuff I would like and let him get on with it.

I have had a stocking every year of my life. Perhaps my favourite was the Christmas after dd married. Her new dh knew that I did stockings for everyone but didn’t realise that dh did one for me. All on his own he did a stocking for me full of funny bits and bobs (squeaky rubber turkey, soft toy duck, puzzles and sweets and a vintage lace hanky). I was moved to tears.

Dairymilkmuncher · 08/10/2018 13:38

@thegreylady what a super SIL Thanks

My Dh said we've got too much this year with three kids now and don't need extra faff or expense

When I see little things that would go lovely in my stocking I'm just going to get them, just treated myself to a new makeup bag HaloSmile

Dh does mine. He often goes to one museum shop and buys everything so it is often themed. Oyster card holders feature a lot. So does lego (eg lego keyring). Often a nice Christmas tree ornament. Usually a magazine too. I love getting a stocking.

PrivateParkin · 10/10/2018 23:44

Stockings are definitely the best bit of Christmas. They're where the magic is!!

My mum still makes all of us one I'm 43 and we make her and dad one each as well. We normally get chocolate, Turkish delight, satsuma and an apple, a shower gel or similar, socks etc - and a pound coin!

BiddyPop · 11/10/2018 13:06

I keep waiting until DD no longer believes to be able to introduce "family stockings" - where we all get one and everyone puts something into the other people's (but it will probably be me filling them all, realistically!). Apparently though, DD still believes. (She's almost 13, in first year (started secondary school) and as with it as you can get!).

We all know, but as DH won't allow "the magic" to be spoiled, I can't go in with "new magic" for us all. ....

Anyway, my list of things I'd love would include:
Miniatures of gin - a selection - or other nice spirits that I might drink
Good chocolates
Needles, decent headed pins, good threads, a Leatherman travel sized tool with proper scissors...and also consumables for papercrafting, knitting, baking etc
Warm thick comfortable hiking socks
I have a couple of gaps in my map collection so a map I don't have (preferably laminated)
Hiking/camping/outdoor adventure gadets
Gardening gloves, plant markers, voucher (and catalogue) for seeds
Sachets or travel sized versions of deep conditioner, face masks, and other face/body treats and treatments for when I am travelling and have time to indulge myself in a bathroom
A good book
A new Sudoku book and a pencil
Nice fruit
A nice travel mug for my coffee
A pair of earphones for everyday use - decent buds would be fine
A (decent) travel pouch for jewellery
Quirky sciency engineering things - mini bust of Einstein, a folding robot man, my own slinky, a raspberry pi.....

It's not that I want all those at once - they're just various things that I'd love to see in a stocking some day.

bastardlyandmutley · 11/10/2018 13:24

DH and I, for the last couple of years, just do a stocking for each other, no main presents. We have a £20 - ish limit. DH also buys me new Christmas PJs to open Christmas Eve which is sweet and I look forward to opening them

DH mainly gets food, chocolate and booze in his whilst I get chocolate, smellies and maybe a scented candle. Nothing earth shatteringly original but we are usually on our own Christmas so it is nice to have some presents to open.

PrivateParkin · 11/10/2018 13:46

Biddy your stocking sounds brill! I'm with your DD on believing as long as possible.

BiddyPop · 11/10/2018 15:29

Private that's my imaginative stocking - I don't get one yet [cry]

I'll probably get a piece of chocolate and some socks....

Shutupanddance1 · 11/10/2018 15:44

Me and DH always do one for each other! But I’ve had a stocking every year and years after not having one, DH now loves Christmas and his stocking!

PrivateParkin · 11/10/2018 19:18

I hope you get one like that one of these Christmases Biddy

thismeansnothing · 11/10/2018 19:31

Me and DH only do stocking presents and set a £20-£25 limit. Last year I got some salted caramel chocolates, salted caramel chocolate spread, salted caramel liquor from hotel chocolate. A mini spirograph set, notepad for said spirograph, fluffy socks and a LED light changing reed diffuser. It's as garish as it sounds but it smelt amazing and was always a giggle to have the light switched on 🤣🤣

I love the suprise each year

PrivateParkin · 11/10/2018 20:52

I'm thinking of doing a stocking for my lovely auntie this year. She loves gardening (has given me loads of plant cuttings etc) so a gardening themed one would be good. Getting loads of good ideas from this thread.

Dairymilkmuncher · 11/10/2018 22:03

@BiddyPop sounds like a huge stocking!!

I love all these ideas, I feel the need to make a grown up stocking for someone now it seems a lot more enjoyable than a hamper even

If I designed a stocking for myself, I think it would have a selection out of the below:

  1. Chocolate truffles or other nice box of chocolates
  2. Possibly some interesting cheese
  3. New thick socks to wear round the house.
  4. New rubber ducks as the bathroom ones are looking discoloured.
  5. A little bottle of essential oil
  6. Some new really sharp pins
  7. A magnetic pin box
  8. A nice woolly hat

Obviously not all of the above! But has been a nice exercise in thinking of Christmas presents for myself!
