£50 gifts for men

Alanamackree · 06/10/2018 23:01

There was a brilliant thread recently with loads of luxurious gift suggestions for women, like Jo Malone and NEOM candles and cashmere gloves (I took notes)
Any thoughts on luxurious gifts for men in that price range?

What do they like?

tentative3 · 07/10/2018 20:29

Nice toiletries (Aesop stuff is gorgeous and to me at least the scents are unisex)

Loungewear, really nice quality brushed cotton bottoms, something like that.

Food/drink

Wine/whisky glasses

Beard trimmer

Masculine sheepskin slippers

I know the thread you're talking about and it was fab but it was with a specific recipient in mind. Are you thinking of someone in particular? If so I'm sure we can come up with something if you can tell us a bit more about his likes and personality.

tentative3 · 07/10/2018 20:31

Actually, just to add another one, cookware. OH has had a really good knife before (are they unlucky as presents if you're superstitious?) and I'm probably going to get my dad a wok from the Netherton Foundry this year.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/10/2018 20:32

Niche whisky

Three pack of Paul Smith socks

Fstar · 07/10/2018 20:39

Molton brown, loccitane, fossil wallet or watch (outlet prices), watch box, under armour top (golf), m and s or debemhams housecoat and slippers, eternity aftershave

These are all things ive given to dad

Dairymilkmuncher · 07/10/2018 20:55

On my list for DH I've got written shakti Mat £50-100 so it must cost about that I'll need to re research.

It's a mat with spikes you lay on for healing and relaxation, meant to give a good night sleep! I think there is a lot to cheese from online though so I need to read some reviews.

I've also got a couple comedy tickets I'm looking for an appropriate book to put them in

Dairymilkmuncher · 07/10/2018 20:55

Oh and weights! You can get all different kinds if your man you're buying for likes home work outs

Pinkprincess1978 · 07/10/2018 21:04

If they are a coffee drinker then a hand grinder and some nice coffees - or even a coffee subscription to I think it's called pact. My husband has both - he loves a coffee gift.

If they add a drinking an expensive bottle of their favourite tipple - men often like whiskey so for £50 you curls get something nice.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/10/2018 22:05

Celtic Sheepskin do really nice men's slippers for around £50. I've bought several, pairs as presents for dh, son in law, etc. They've always gone down well.

IIRC they're made in Cornwall from local sheepskin, not imported from sweatshops overseas, and I've always found delivery very quick.

Great ideas.
I don’t have a particular recipient in mind, or rather I have several. One is a business contact of DH’s (early 70’s, rich as Croesus) and two are my brothers in law who I could draw in secret santa, and just don’t know well enough to pick something personal and thoughtful (mid 40s, early 50s) and the last is my nephew (mid 20s)
My in laws always come up with gift exchange schemes around mid December when it’s too late to trust Amazon. I don’t shop well under pressure and I hate shopping in December. I know it sounds very impersonal (and it is) but if I could buy a couple of things now, then if they don’t get used up at Christmas I can give them as birthday gifts later.

dairymilkmuncher don't spend that sort of money on one of those mats. I bought one because I thought it might help my back. It does a bit, although it's not a miracle cure and it does relax me. But there are loads on amazon for around £15 and there really doesn't seem to be much difference.

tentative3 · 08/10/2018 11:54

OK, so nothing which needs to be correctly sized.

I think I would be tempted to buy a really good bottle of wine or a bottle of whisky or port as one back up option. I'm making sweeping generalisations here but I'd have thought that might do for the business contact or either of the BILs, plus they might recognise the cost, if that makes sense. Alternatively really good glasses. I don't know where you live but we have a few independent/small local chain wine shops round here who would very happily pick something out if you went in with a budget.

Is the nephew a definite purchase or is he also part of the potential secret santa?

Alanamackree · 08/10/2018 15:30

Hmmm, a really good wine (or a whiskey) would work for bil1 and Mr. Business. And that’s not a huge hassle to pick out in December if I have to. Bil2 only drinks Bacardi and drinks a lot of it so a bottle doesn’t really feel like a present somehow.
Some great ideas I wouldn’t have thought of.

Nephew is also potential. I must sound insane but DH, ds1 and ds2 will also draw names, and I’ll have to shop for four gifts

Even just to have some ideas is great.

DH loves
Paul Smith or Burlington Arcade striped cashmere socks
Leather gloves
A good Cuban cigar (they're about £50 each)
A silk tie
Trufitt & Hill cologne or shaving soap in a rosewood bowl

MinaPaws · 08/10/2018 15:45

A rare gin? Rose-scented Sipsmith or Rhubard infused With some good Fevertree tonics
A Swiss army knife with extras that fit his interests (there's a sommelier one, a hunting one, sailing one etc)

MinaPaws · 08/10/2018 15:47

If they drink wine, a silver wine coaster for the bottle is rather nice.

wink1970 · 08/10/2018 15:49

Ugg (or other sheepskin) slippers. My DM bought DH some last year and he has lived in them, to my surprise.

Other than that, following! I struggle with DH....

wink1970 · 08/10/2018 15:52

@MinaPaws if they like wine then a really good corkscrew is imperative!

The Le Creuset "Waiter's Friend" one is particularly robust, and crucially has the double-jointed arm that helps with fragile corks!

tentative3 · 08/10/2018 16:31

Hmm, how about a cheese knife? Might be slightly less random than a cooking knife. We once got a really good deal on a Georg Jensen cheese knife but I can only see it on the website as a set with a cheese board. Still, the website as a whole might be worth a look, they had some wine accessories that would be in budget.

A washbag? Leather or Harris tweed?

A bit left field but a board game? Carcasonne or similar?

S'well bottle or similar if any of them might like/use something like that?

Scarf - I was looking at Weekday scarves earlier, they look pretty nice.

JackieReacher · 08/10/2018 16:35

don't mess about with Mr Business, just head straight to Fortnum and Mason.
(board game is good - look also at Perudo and Puckett. Which makes me think of Pickett - excellent gloves)

tentative3 · 08/10/2018 16:38

More generally speaking, and for those who are buying for someone in particular, this year for various people I'm getting/considering the following (but they are a bit more specific, in some cases, than what OP is after):

Whisky
PJ bottoms
Beard trimmer
Netherton Foundry wok
Ordnance Survey Premium subscription
Seletti Mouse lamp
Big pepper grinder (I know, random)

In the past I've had great success with audio books for OH, who drives hundreds of miles each week. I've also done running boxers/pants from Under Armour, fleece lined over shirt things, a mondaine watch, a subscription to our local mountain bike centre, comedy tickets, a gliding experience, a zip wire experience. I'll keep thinking. For some reason I have plenty of ideas this year but I usually struggle, so this thread has the potential to be very useful to look back on next year!

3stonedown · 08/10/2018 18:06

Ahh good thread! Always struggle for step dad but a shakti mat (cheaper Amazon one) and some nice gin would be perfect

Sadik · 08/10/2018 19:40

I would think most people (unless non drinkers of course) would be very pleased with a good bottle of port at Christmas time - or perhaps madeira to be a little more original.
