Any ideas?
Finding each year more difficult. Things are getting smaller but more expensive.

I agree! It gets more difficult and more expensive each year! Mumsnet has been great for stocking threads for teenage boys in the past so I’ll be watching with interest......

Stockings aren't compulsory. Who spend money on tat that don't need? I stopped doing them for my 14 and 11 year olds last year, they're old enough to know that Christmas isn't about presents and stuff but about spending nice time with the people you love and enjoying some food and booze.

PsychedelicSheep · 06/10/2018 13:36

They do get a present or two each from their dad and I, but there's just no need for excessive spending on crap.

PsychedelicSheep · 06/10/2018 13:37

Why spend money on tat they don't need? that should say!

TwigTheWonderKid · 06/10/2018 14:04

I agree PsychedelicSheep but there is something very satisfying in assembling a thoughtful stocking. They don't have to be full of crap.

So far for my DS this year I've bought him:
An LED beanie hat
Sugru
A sloth "Squshy" which he is theoretically too old for but which he will secretly love.
A fire steel

Plus tradition dictates that there is always a chocolate santa, chocolate coins, a shiny £1 coin and a satsuma.

Ricekrispie22 · 06/10/2018 15:38

Nanoblocks
Gadget decals
Soap on a rope
2019 calendar
Grow your own Venus flytrap
Heat change mug
Baffle puzzle
Popsocket

greenlanes · 06/10/2018 15:55

Loving this thread already. I have already:

christmas bauble (related to his interest)
pack of small Xmas choccies - Xmas tree/puddings
stationery bits - eg found erasers in the shape of his initials going cheap in Smiths clearance
flashy bike lights - from Lidl
small lego sets

and most importantly new Xmas wrapping paper that he hasnt seen before!

But I am off to look up sloth Squshy - my son is obsessed with sloths!
I have tried him with Sugru previously - looked mega but I dont think he is using it quite right so i am not replacing that.

Courtney555 · 06/10/2018 16:03

I don't think stockings should have presents. I think it's all about the magic and tradition, so they should be filled with nominal but traditional things.

DS is 10. He gets some variation on a torch each year. Some form of very traditional toy, like a little glider to put together, or those army men that you fling in the air and have parachutes... You're never too old for those. A selection box or gold coins. Something manual like a rubiks cube.

That's more than enough for an initial thing to open on Christmas morning. Last year DS was so involved with the glider he didn't open any of his tree presents for about 2 hours.

TwigTheWonderKid · 06/10/2018 20:55

greenlanes I found the squishy sloth in The Card Factory.

aldgadgie · 06/10/2018 20:57

DS (12) always gets a lush bath bomb in his stocking. I normally put in

Love presents in stockings, we (even me and DH) all have a stockings and open them in bed together on Christmas morning.

BrokenWing · 07/10/2018 14:22

stockings dont need to be full of crap and they are a fun Christmas tradition so ignore the bah humbug. generally ds's is full of things ds needs/uses/wants, past stockings have had:

Vouchers - xbox, iTunes, scratch card, driving experience, cinema vouchers for over Xmas hols with popcorn/sweet pack.
Clothes - adidas socks, touch screen gloves, footie team scarf
Football stuff: every year he gets a football (it's a big Stocking), maybe shin guards/stays, goalie gloves, etc. things he would get during the year anyway
Accessories : new wallet if he needs one, earphones, money tray for bedroom as he always had loads of change lying about, phone power bank, phone case
Smellies: deodorant, Aftershave
Games:if they are into puzzles, books, mini games etc they can be good if not don't waste money on them

This year he is into the gym and doing stuff at home so will get a small resistance band set for his gym homework, gym socks.

Last year we got ds a jar of black face pack cream to help with his spots which he actually loved and still uses every week or so on his tone.

A mini rubber/foam ball, usually rugby for shape, he always had one of these in his room he tosses about and last year's is a bit burst.

Treats : nice chocolate, pud in a mug, favourite sweets. Always a lindt santa.

All stuff he will love, use and most be would have needed anyway. Watch them over the next few weeks to see things they could use/need.

Stockings are my favourite part of the day. The dc's bring them I to our bedroom and open them on my bed while I have my first coffee of the morning.

Ds is 12 this year, he always has
Socks
Underwear
Chocolate coins
Chocolate orange
Magazine
Some kind of gadget / toy
Toiletries
Deoderant

Thank you Twig, I've just ordered him that beanie hat as well Smile

GVmama · 07/10/2018 19:52

Some great suggestions, thank you! We will be adding a tub of slime into our DS's stocking this year, with the usual socks/ chocs etc.

mamaduckbone · 07/10/2018 20:04

I haven’t started yet this year and will have a 13 year old by then but last year’s included...

  • socks
  • toiletries
  • a book
  • a (cheap, 2nd hand) PS4 game
  • a couple of bits of tut that he’s too old for really (slime, make a zombie modelling clay)
  • chocolate / sweets
  • a mug
I love stockings - I try to put a few things in them that they would need anyway.
rainingcatsanddog · 07/10/2018 20:15

Ds will be 12 at Xmas but in y8 which includes 13 year olds
