SN gifts thread

Last year there was a very good thread (or part of thread) with requests and suggestions for gifts for children with various SN. I can't find it so I thought I would start a new one.

I am looking for ideas for DS10 who has ADHD and is dyslexic. Audiobook suggestions welcome, also anything to make spelling fun, and easy-read but interesting for his age books.
Are there any 'fiddle toys' that people recommend for older children?

Do add your own requests!

For those who like sensory play, playdough, moon sand etc... I have found something on Amazon called ‘floof’, I’m tempted to buy it for dd.

We've decided on the Blue Bot for DS and wavering between a new bike and Hape dominoes for his Jan birthday.
Bike is a hard one as DD would get his smaller one but then she's getting a present but for his birthday.

What would you advise for a 7yo boy with ADHD? Great thread, thanks!

drspouse · 13/11/2018 11:58

What does he like?

PhilomenaButterfly · 13/11/2018 12:04

Roblox, Lego Ninjago.

drspouse · 13/11/2018 12:08

Is it your DS or someone else?
Maybe ask what he's got if someone else's?
For our nearly 7 (but not very into "what everyone else has" and also poorly coordinated so not into Lego models) we're getting the robot above and probably Hape dominoes or new bike for birthday.

PhilomenaButterfly · 13/11/2018 12:25

No, he's mine.

PhilomenaButterfly · 13/11/2018 12:29

Blue Bot looks fun, not sure how long it would last though. Hmm

drspouse · 13/11/2018 12:54

What do you mean how long it would last?
Do you mean in terms of physical/battery (they are designed for schools so quite robust)?
Or in terms of what to do with it (there are lots of more advanced things you can do, add ons you can get)?

Lovemusic33 · 13/11/2018 14:40

Just bought this for £11.99 on lightening deals on Amazon. Looks like a good sensory light.

Oh gosh I'd love to get DS something like that but he is going through a phase (well I hope it's a phase) of throwing everything in his room at the wall when he's cross.

Lovemusic33 · 13/11/2018 15:12

drspouse it’s hard isn’t it, my dd breaks most things, usually by taking them apart or being to rough with them. The only thing that survives is the iPad (in a pretty good case).

PhilomenaButterfly · 13/11/2018 21:50

drspouse I mean in terms of physical. DS will just throw things when angry.

Sand timers are a good visual for SN children, they are on eBay you can get all different sizes, there is 1 that is huge but didn't buy that as it was around £30 and don't trust my ds not to smash it but the smaller ones are £6.99 so not too pricey but still a good size.

I use them for things I need him to do, such as homework (!) practising reading spelling writing his name etc the sand timer is 10 minutes so he must sit and do his homework for 10 minutes with me until the sand has run out then he can play, so I'll do that a couple of times a day so he has done 20 minutes of homework in a day, or I say 10 minutes until bedtime and get the sand timer out as his visual warning or 10 more minutes on the iPad etc etc.

Must say the sand timer is used quite a lot in this house Grin

drspouse · 14/11/2018 09:13

Yes we used ours this morning for "when it's run out you're too late for breakfast". It didn't.

Bumping this thread in the hope of getting some more ideas!
Ds is 8 and has non verbal asd, we have got him some smaller gifts but need a main present still.
Past presents he has liked or things he plays with include:
Tablets
Wireless over ear heaps phones
bean bag chair
Marble run
Jolly penguin race
Re-useable sticker books (Mellissa and Doug one)
Cog/gears toy
Slinky
Optical toys like georeflectors, mirageascopes and symmetry mirrors
Trampoline
Yoga ball
He also loves helium balloons and really likes google maps street view. He likes CBeebies and Mickey Mouse characters.
He is really hard to buy for as doesn't play with a lot of toys, Any suggestions welcome thank youSmile

I have got dd (ASD) a mermaid sequin cushion, B&M have them for £6.99 and they are a good size, she already has a small one that lives in our Campervan and she loves it.

Icansmellcolours · 20/12/2018 11:19

Thank you for the idea about the mermaid cushion. I ordered one from amazon and have just received it looks great think ds will love it Xmas Smile

HalfBloodPrincess · 20/12/2018 12:27

Ds is 18 months and doesn’t have a diagnosis yet, but it’s looking likely he has Asd (when talking to the paediatrician, they all say ‘when’ he gets his diagnosis rather than ‘if’)

At his language and play sessions they have these building blocks that are completely mirrored. I’ve tried looking online but can only find ones that are wooden with mirrored tiles stuck on.

Does anyone know the kind I’m looking for, or what they’re called? Ds loves them and I’d like to get some for home if I can.

Thanks

I don't think these are quite what you describe, but would they do?
