Games for 3 year olds

Hi,

My son will be almost 3 at Christmas (birthday the start of January) and I’m looking for some games we can play together as a family. So far we’ve tried a couple of orchard games - smelly wellies and farmyard head and tails - picture dominos and a Thomas card matching thing. He hasn’t really been interested in them and certainly hasn’t got the idea of turn taking or playing the way the game was actually intended!

Anyone got any suggestions? Is he too young for things like twister, hungry hippos and kerplunk or do I try other orchard games?

All suggestions welcome.
Thanks!

Orchard Rots games re great, and my children have started get them at around three, but at that age they’ve needed to be in the right mood, and only play for a short while. My just turned three year old currently loves Dotty Dinos and Shopping List.

Other games he likes include Pip up pirate, Hubgry Hippos and Peppa Pig snap.

I think with all of these games at this age, you have to be a bit flexible with turn taking and accept that the game may be aborted early on ocassion.

Happy playing!

Thanks equimum is forgotten pop up pirates! I’ve heard good things about the shopping list so will def get that!

My 3 year old loves hungry hippos. I just make sure I play with him so the balls don’t get lost

He also enjoys crocodile dentist and pig goes pop

The shopping trolley game is good, think it's an orchard one. Mine all liked it from about 3 onwards. Good old snakes and ladders is still popular with my dc too.

Doh nutters, Buckaroo and Elefun were popular in our house when my children were about that age. Definitely not quiet games though !

I find my almost 3yo copes better with dotty dinos than shopping list, I think because there is a dice to pass on in dotty dinos which is easier to understand.

At that age DD liked the the Orchard toys ladybird spot counting game, the cupcake one and the shopping list one. Hungry hippos and pop up pirate too.

She's 6 now and kerplunk really winds her up. Takes forever to set up and not very satisfying once you get going 🤣

Mine loved “sneaky Squirrels” at that age, although my eldest always struggled with the other squirrels stealing his acorns! (Highly competitive)

Actually some of the other games at the bottom of the linked page look really good too! (It’s not an affiliate link)

Lunchbox (also orchard) is like shopping list but a bit easier.

Pop up pirate was a big hit at that age.

Dobble

My nearly three year old liked the old MacDonald lotto from orchard toys - it was slightly easier / quicker to play than the shopping game

Orchard's 3 little pigs with it's houses to build and Scaredy cat are firm favourites of ds who is 3 and a half.

Haba also have some good games, Amazon have loads of them. We like "My first orchard" and Shiverstone Castle.

UniversalTruth · 01/10/2018 16:56

Oh yes, forgot about Haba games - I was looking at Animal upon Animal. Also, search Amazon for games by Peaceable Kingdom - I haven't got any but I like the look of the co-operative games such as Snug as a Bug.

My recommendations would be:
Funny bunny - ravensburger
Yeti in my spaghetti
Hisss by gamewright
Pengaloo from blue orange games

I always take a look at gameplay on utube to give you a proper idea if you don’t know the game.

DD2 is 3.5 and loved playing Uno junior over the summer. Dominos are good for counting, as is snakes and ladders. She also played junior Alias this weekend, which is a bit like Taboo, and I was pleasantly surprised at her ability to give clues - if they're quite verbal it's a good one.
