Need to buy presents for backpackers

HI All,

Starting to think about Christmas and the first present that needs to be bought is for a backpacker. They are in Australia so I will need to post it ahead of time.

It is a hard one because I want them to have something to open on Christmas day but it has to be light and be something that is usefull and worth them carrying around.

Any ideas?

Kindle?
Jewellery?
Gift voucher for the country they are in (Oz stores often email vouchers)
Carepack of favourite unobtainable foods

DickensianHysteric · 26/09/2018 20:06

A packet of their favourite biscuits or sweets from the UK. That's I appreciated most when I was in NZ!

A decent water bottle?

redsummershoes · 26/09/2018 20:09

a night in a proper hotel?

Experiences. They can exchange too

Care pack and a night in a hotel - I would have bloody loved both of them when I was travelling! A nice hot bath with no-ones hair in it Grin

Icedgemandjelly · 26/09/2018 20:10

It's also really.nice to get British sweets but customs can be funny

defineme · 26/09/2018 20:10

New underwear!

When I was backpacking my mum sent me two new vest tops which were lovely as took hardly any room but so nice to get some new clothes when wearing the same things every day. I reckon a multipack of knickers would be lovely when backpacking too so you could replace the ones you had been carrying around. Also a lightweight slim novel. And something cheesy and christmassy like one of those cards that plays a tune when you open it.
A night in a hotel is lovely idea but let them choose which night as they may have made plans with friends already for the night of christmas day etc.

Did I miss whether they’re Male or Female? Ladies might appreciate a luxurious beauty product - moisturiser or lip gloss or a little piece of jewellery. Or how about a solar charger for their technology if you want it more practical.

Can you buy something online and get it delivered? I live in Australia and have found that postage to the UK usually costs more than whatever I bought! The supermarkets here have an "international" section and there are a few branches of The British Lolly Shop so it is no longer hard to get British sweets and chocolate (and Australian customs are fierce). What about tickets to a show/concert/festival - check out ticketek.com.au and ticketmaster.com.au. If you give ages and genders I can come up with more local stuff (we are in Sydney).

My mum sent me a lovely xmas care package to oz many years ago, and the only thing I still remember is a silly walking penguin toy Grin
So it doesn't have to be practical!

Icedgemandjelly · 28/09/2018 17:17

I would have loved an Xmas care package. My parents just put 30 quid in my account 🤔😭

Drummingisfun · 28/09/2018 17:58

I was away for xmas when backpacking and my Dad paid for us to have 3 days over xmas in a rrslly nice hotel. Was such a treat to have a nice bathroom, huge unlimited breakfast and a rooftop pool.

CherLooksYoungerThanMe · 28/09/2018 18:21

Gift vouchers for a hotel chain? Hilton or Marriott, something like that. Then they can have a night or two of comfort when they want it.

Sethis · 28/09/2018 18:25

Are they camping or just hostelling?

Polkapjs · 28/09/2018 18:27

Ooh hotel would be ace!!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 28/09/2018 20:11

Hotel with a spa and great room service - lush!

GiraffeObsessedBaby · 28/09/2018 20:38

My brother went backpacking for a good few years. I got him something similar to the link with a few printed photos and a few empty. He loved it and still has it now he's home. He said it was just ace as it was easy to pack and made him smile every time he opened it out.

iTunes vouchers?

Rmcamp900 · 05/10/2018 15:48

So many great ideas!!!

In the end I went for a back packer towel. It is from some girls that have come back themselves and designed it.

I really like it - practical and a luxury and happy to support a small business. I am also going to steal a couple of other ideas on here - just small silly things. Stuff to open.

www.soltern.com is the company.

Just to follow up with the thread, she is hosteling.

I think camping is a bit too hard core for her :-)
