My DD is 7, does bushcraft etc. Any recommendations for a child's safety pocket knife? Ta x

We have a camo Swiss army knife. Not sure there are safety ones? Defeats the purpose IMO and we agreed supervised use only etc and he's been responsible.

We got a martiini knife for our dds (5 and 7yo). They aren't a safety knife, but I tend to think a sharp knife is safer for a sensible child as it won't slip across the item being cut.

We got that brand because it is the same as the bushcraft knives that dp and I use (the dc's ones are smaller), they are beautiful knives.

Obviously they are used with supervision.

I agree with sharp rather than dull blade, and only using under supervision.

I’m a Cub Scout leader (and parent), and while the other cub pack don’t allow knives at all (they present knives to those leaving for scouts), we allow parents to make the decision and bring well stocked first aid kits. We also do knife safety training every spring (before 1st residential - the only time knives tend to appear) and reminders before every other residential.

Our Cubs only start at 8.5, and many of the Parents don’t get knives until much later. But they all share them on camp anyway....

Also, we tell them to only get a basic, and small size (not teeny tiny size - but not the larger size either - “standard” ) Swiss Army knife (victorinox) or similar, and not one with loads of tools.

Upgrading in future years is fine, but at that age, they only really want a blade and maybe a screwdriver or something. But not the “49 tools that mean you can survive the apocalypse” versions! Apart from expense, they’re too heavy for small peoples pockets/belts.

And get some identifying marks on it - engrave the blade, score name into handle, at the very least decent permanent marker on it.

Opinel do some lovely ones with rounded blades. The blade itself is very sharp and great for mucking about whittling etc but it isn't pointy so less chance of accidental stabbing. a sharp blade properly used is safer than a dull blade.
