Gift ideas for our hosts for Christmas day?

This year we are spending Christmas day with our closest friends. They have invited us round for the day and evening. They are very generous whenever they have us round and I know they will provide plenty of food and drink throughout the day.

We are taking the turkey and pigs in blankets for the meal and will be taking our own drinks. Just looking for ideas for a gift we can take for them as a thankyou for hosting us. What kind of thing would you appreciate from your guests?

Big box of chocolates for them after you leave, otherwise they'll share them with you.

A beautiful glass Christmas tree decoration and some Christmassy fresh flowers.

livingthegoodlife · 23/09/2018 16:33

Yes, Christmas themed bouquet of flowers (pre arranged). Perfect!

ALemonyPea · 23/09/2018 16:35

How much are you wanting to spend? How about a Fortnum and Mason hamper?

Or a nice case of mixed wine and a fancy box of chocolates?

Ricekrispie22 · 23/09/2018 16:59

A good board game or jigsaw puzzle.

Drink, take more than you will drink and tell them you have, a nice bottle of fizz.

I'm with recklessgran - a beautiful glass Christmas tree ornament / other decoration (which would mean I'd remember a lovely day whenever I hung it in future) and flowers (rather than food because there's already so much food and drink around at Christmas) would be perfect for me.

Almondio · 23/09/2018 17:19

You're a lovely guest and friend! We host Christmas every year for family and whilst parents bring the turkey, some wine and a bottle of fizz, the other people (usually teo other couples) who attend bring nothing.

Makes me pretty sad actually. It's not about grand gestures, but even a bottle of wine would be appreciated.

We normally bring a Christmas ornament, not necessarily if they host Christmas Day but also for any hosting during Christmas as I think it is brave to open your house during December, there is always enough to do to add a party or just drinks to the mayhem.

I try to avoid sweets as there is enough food already at this time and candles only if I know they appreciate it. DH hates anything scented, he gets horrible headaches so I always gift candles on as even unlit they can cause problems. I had to put the flower bouquet I got from his company after DD’s birth outside as they contained lilies.

I always make a Hogmanay hamper if anyone's hosting us at Christmas. I normally put in a really nice bottle of fizz, black bun, cherry cake, sultana cake, Madeira cake, shortbread, crisps and nuts.

A voucher for a local restaurant so they can let someone else cook for them

Monr0e · 23/09/2018 19:03

Lovely ideas, thank you!

I love the idea of a Christmas ornament or special bauble they can use every year. And a lovely bunch of Christmas themed flowers. We will be taking a bottle of fizz too.

And thank you @Almondio for saying I'm a lovely friend.

Any tips or ideas where we might get a beautiful Christmas tree decoration for them? Thank you

You can always find a good variety of decent gifts at your local garden centre. Also look at the charity shops in town as well for ideas and inspiration. They often stock decent Christmas cards and gifts for sale. Online you can find some amazing deals on books etc as well. Your local garden centre might also have a Christmas wreath on sale.

TBH at Christmas when every surface is covered with decorations and bottles and boxes I would find flowers a bit of a faff to arrange and display as lovely though the idea is. I would take plenty of fizz and maybe send flowers to arrive just into the new year - I love flowers after Christmas to cheer the house up once the decorations are down. I do like the idea of a bauble though.

A bottle of wine always goes down well
