Hi,

Sorry if there is another thread already on this subject (and an extra sorry for posting when there's still 3 months to go but I'm trying to be prepared this year Grin)..

What are your necessities for Christmas? I'm talking mainly about food and drink but happy to hear about any other necessities such as board games, Christmas CD's etc!

Thanks!

We do a buffet at Christmas, no one particularly enjoys a roast and there are only 3 of us.

So breakfast must have delicious pastries.
Lunch is a good cut of beef, nice bread, good cheeses, nice picky bits which we just pick at all day.

Christmas cake and Wensleydale

Good red wine

Lots of gin and tonic.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/09/2018 18:53

Marzipan chocolates (from Lakeland )
Lemon Pannetonne )I think Lidl , could be Aldi)
Sainsbury bakery shortcrust mince pies

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/09/2018 18:54

Oh and the TVTimes and 4 different coloured pens (to mark what we want to see)

ShowOfHands · 19/09/2018 19:01

Radio Times and highighters!
Cheese footballs/twiglets/treelets
Trays of salty nibbles like pretzels and similar
Chocolate Orange
After Eights
Mixed nuts and raisins
York fruits
Tins of chocolate

That's my childhood right there.

at picky bits. Did you know that's always voted as one of the most loathed phrases on MN?

thismeansnothing · 19/09/2018 19:09

Quality street (in a tin not the tiny plastic tubs)

Christmas Chutney from the chutney man at Manchester Xmas markets. The year he's not there it will be a very sad christmas!

Hot fresh orange juice (no bits) with a shot of amaretto stirred in

DH has to make Nigellas gingerbread stuffing which we now call 'cake-on'

I have to make Mary berries fruit cake as an Xmas cake. And my grandma's local authority school dinners Xmas pudding recipe

Pigs in blankets. They are the law!

Husband insists on stollen but I don't like it

Pickled 'things' (onions, walnuts, chutneys), cheese and crackers, a glazed baked ham, Christmas cake (made a couple of months ahead), some sort of fruity liqueur for me, whisky for DH, chocolate coins for breakfast (for DS!)

it yourself.

Desserts - not everyone likes christmas pudding. I normally
put ice creams or lollies in freezer for children

At least 2 Tins of Quality Street (cos they are only half the size
they used to be!!)

Shadow1234 · 19/09/2018 21:40

Might sound silly, but some of these are things that i have
run out of leading up to xmas, and overlooked them because I was concentrating on all the main food and drink
items.

Tin foil and cling film.
Table napkins
Salt
Apple sauce/mint sauce (depending on meat you buy)
Duck fat (if you use it)

2018SoFarSoGreat · 19/09/2018 22:55

DidIReally what is this baked bean sized cake you speak of? You mean you can make them in different sizes? I have been pondering poncing in this regard but had it in my head that you could only use a giant square tin like the one that Shortbread comes in - the big size. How does this work?

torthecatlady · 19/09/2018 22:59
