Fortnum and mason

Is fortnum and mason worth the price ?
I want something lovely for my grandparents who are in their sixties , they enjoy nice things but are on a budget and would class m&s as a treat . So is fortnum & mason stuff worth the price and if so is it worth getting a small hamper or just buying more stuff and putting it in a cheaper basket ?

I bought a sachertorte cake from there many years ago and still dream about it! Perhaps buy something like that if you're nearby?

reluctantbrit · 15/09/2018 15:29

I would say yes but ai always do my own baskets s then I can tailor it to the taste better,

BurritoSquad · 15/09/2018 15:35

@HollowTalk
That's good to know ! I really would hate to spend so much if it was just average !

@reluctantbrit I was planning on doing a custom basket but was wondering if the actual basket is worth the price ? As if I bought a cheaper basket elsewhere I could afford more things to go in it . Or would that look cheap ? I have a budget of £120 and the medium basket is £40

The baskets/hampers are lovely and have the F&M logo on them

Mama1980 · 15/09/2018 15:45

Definitely worth it, their stuff is dreamy :)
I treat my mum every Christmas to a cake and some condiments.

ajandjjmum · 15/09/2018 15:45

It is lovely and special as it's from F & M, but I do think you have to look at the contents carefully, as some of the items are not things that we would regularly use. Same with Harrods.

Nanasueathome · 15/09/2018 15:46

I was desperate for the Christmas Hamper last year and bought it a couple of days after Christmas, when it was reduced
The smaller hampers are nice too...around £60 for them

BurritoSquad · 15/09/2018 15:48

So does anyone have any recommendations of things that are really nice ? My grandparents aren't fussy and will try most things

My mum raves about the Christmas pud so I'd definitely include that.

AdaColeman · 15/09/2018 15:51

Have a look at amazon east2eden baskets before you decide, they are about ten pounds, so it would give you a bit more to spend on the actual food items.

Even without the basket, the F&M items will arrive in a nice box with their logo, and are beautifully packed, so that would be another option for you.

Mama1980 · 15/09/2018 15:52

The Major grey mango chutney is delicious and different.
Their Christmas puddings are wonderful, very rich and high quality.

Urbanbeetler · 15/09/2018 15:55

I think their stuff is astronomically expensive! I sometimes go after Christmas when they have huge reductions and I can just about afford a pot of jam.

I would buy a hamper basket and make up my own hamper for someone using nice stuff from the best range in good supermarkets, or better still, stuff from small local producers. You would get twice as much for your bucks but I agree, not as swanky as a F&M hamper!

HRMumness · 15/09/2018 15:56

I've just ordered a huge bunch of things for all our Australian family (both mine and DH relatives live there). We order biscuits, tea, chocolate and fancy jams / mustards for them. I'm sending it just before the surface mail cut off Halo.

They do say that the contents of the basket are worth more than the price but then you have a giant basket / hamper thing floating around. I always prefer to buy things people like rather than the chosen hampers (and its too expensive to send to Australia like that anyway). I'd find a cheaper way of wrapping it to be honest so you can spend more on things you like.

Scaredcrow · 15/09/2018 16:48

I was treated to two hampers last year one was f&m it was lovely BUT the contents of the other one tasted just as good and there was more of it.
The biggest difference between them being the quality of the basket, if a fab basket is important and money no object go for f&m but I can definitely recommend an Aldi hamper too.

MaNeOi · 15/09/2018 18:09

Depending on where you live you should just gift afternoon tea for two - I did this for my Aunt a couple of years ago and was a massive success!

Ivgotasecretcanyoukeepit · 15/09/2018 18:14

It’s a yes from me. I always gift F&M hampers as well as buy my own. They are always of a good quality.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 15/09/2018 18:16

It’s absolutely worth it IF the recipients are familiar with the brand and cachet. It makes them feel v spoilt. Recipients have always told us it feels like a once in a lifetime event when it arrives! Otherwise although the products are brilliant, similar products can be sourced cheaper.

Musicalstatues · 15/09/2018 18:16

Colossus chocolate biscuits!!!

SoupDragon · 15/09/2018 18:25

Consider making up your own hamper on one of their bags for life The wicker hampers are lovely but would they use one or would it just be hanging around? (I have a tiny hamper and the logo just looks spray painted on anyway)

BurritoSquad · 15/09/2018 19:10

Thanks for the suggestions ! Please keep the recommendations coming , there's so much to choose from

I think it's a good point - do they know F&M as a brand? If so I think it's a lovely idea but would possibly get my own hamper/basket and just buy stuff from there. The Christmas puddings are fantastic.

BurritoSquad · 15/09/2018 19:35

Yes they know the brand . They would never dream of paying that much on something for themselves though

I think it would be lovely then. I had a quick look on their website on the back of this thread and they have some lovely looking things, especially in the Christmas section!

Almostthere15 · 16/09/2018 09:13

I love their food and always treat myself to a Christmas order if funds allow. I think the suggestion of their bag for life is a great one. You could combine contents from there and elsewhere depending on what you wanted to include. Their Christmas pickle is a joy and I love their lemon curd. The nuts in a jar are fab too. I've tried crackers but they seemed average at best. I wasnt fussed for the tea either.

I think m and s do great chocolate so I'd get that from there and depending on what you're adding my nan loves the tinned ham etc from there but I've never tried it.

OrdinarySnowflake · 16/09/2018 09:36

Yes. Particularly their ginger and dark chocolate biscuits - food of the gods.

I used to work down the street from F&M and lots of gifts from there. It's all so lovely and the staff are so very helpful.
