Hey everyone,
need some help, want to buy father-in-law a lovely bottle of red for Xmas, he loves the stuff and knows his stuff! I heard him say at a restaurant he likes a dry red..... if that's any help.

I have minus 50% knowledge when it comes to red wine, I dont drink it, and on the rare occasions I do drink I go for a bourbon whiskey or champagne,
every time I look I keep moving back to the Veuve Clicquot and Makers Mark thinking mmmm I like that bottle.......... have to remind myself I am buying for fil NOT me!

Any help is much appreciated, TIA

Can you ask him what his fave is?

Have you got a local wine seller near you? Go and chat to them about the sort of thing he likes (see if you can get more details, such as grape variety, country) and your price limit

Dry red I’d take to mean no sugars obviously but also the right blend of tannins and acidity to leave that dry feeling in your mouth. I’d look at Cabernet Sauvignon, possibly Merlot or maybe Syrah. But I second going to a local independent wine shop and asking for their recommendation. Or look at his wine rack next time you’re round to get an idea of what he usually drinks.

@ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers I have no idea... you may as well be speaking Japanese to me!
No we dont have an independent wine shop here, I live in a tiny town in the arse end of nowhere, I dont want to ask really he will get onto me then, ill take a sneaky look in his wine rack next time I'm there why didn't I think of that?!
thanks MN's!!

Chateau neuf du pap. You can get a good Bottle between £13 and £20. Beautifully dry. And he'll know it

French wine from the burgundy region like Beaujolais village.

Wine snobs prefer a cork and the bigger the bottle indent in the base the better. No for a pressie I'd avoid screw caps with flat bottoms.

In November's there are some great discounts. So you could get some great wines at the supermarket for £10- £16

Chateaux neuf de pap! Lovely and you’ll be able to get one from any big supermarket. Look on the top shelf in th French section.
