I really need help with my hardest person to buy for...

My Father In Law...

He retired early and spends his life in his house. DH originally told me he loved antique books, so we would always get him that. Turns out DH was wrong.. Hmm and he was a bit baffled by the antique books.

I used to buy him boxsets, but with recent gifts of Netflix, now TV and them having sky movies it’s a bit of a non gift.

I tried for a few years to get him something ‘to do’. Some theatre tickets.. they didn’t go. Really nice chess set, and encouraged my DD’s to ask him to teach them... lasted 5 minutes and I think it lives in the spare room. Camera and book about camera... pretty much as well received as the chess set.

DH said ‘just buy him a shirt’. That’s all very well and good, and I could, but I want to get him something he likes at least once!

The closest I came was when they were having their extension and had been talking about the colour and kinds of things they wanted but largely couldn’t be bothered so would just keep their old stuff.. so I made them a ‘living room in a box’ with new lampshades, throws, cushions, ornaments, candles, a piece of artwork and some framed pictures. He said ‘this is nice’ and I was so pleased Wink... sadly no other rooms are being done!

Any ideas?

Leave it to dh.

ShrodingersSturdyPyjamas · 09/09/2018 18:06

Ask him?

Or let your husband buy a present for his own father?

I never buy presents for my OH's family. That is his job.

NicoAndTheNiners · 09/09/2018 18:08

Alcohol.

dementedma · 09/09/2018 18:08

garden centre voucher?

ziggiestardust · 09/09/2018 18:09

I think we need to know a little more about him...

Is he mobile? Would a National Trust membership be something he’d go for? Or the historic royal palaces; they cover Hampton Court, the Tower Of London, Kew and a few other places...?

My own father was very much the same; I seemed to ‘miss’ every year. Even vouchers went unspent and left on a shelf, very puzzling.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 09/09/2018 18:09

If I leave it to DH he will buy a shirt. And I know that’s fine... but I’ll be there to give the gift and I don’t want it to look like I couldn’t be bothered.

He’s not very mobile, he likes his chair Grin

How about an Amazon Echo (Alexia)

SoyDora · 09/09/2018 18:12

Why would it look like you can’t be bothered? It would look like your DH couldn’t be bothered, surely?

NeverTwerkNaked · 09/09/2018 18:12

Just leave it to your DH. Maybe buy a token to go with whatever DH gets, eg a little food hamper or a nice bottle of wine?
It sounds like you are into quite extravagant gift giving whereas maybe they aren’t?

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 09/09/2018 18:13

Alexa is a great idea, we got one for Father’s Day :)

Or do you have children? If so a shirt plus a framed photo of the children. Just token things. Then at least if they aren’t appreciated you haven’t chucked heaps of money down the drain.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 09/09/2018 18:14

I’m really not, it’s not about the price. Some of the books we got him were probably £9.99. It’s about what it is...
Even for my children I don’t concentrate on price or how even it is. I just get what I think they’ll like.

Reading lights....most older people struggle without corrective lighting and are often embarrassed to mention it.

These people do attractive ones

At least he'll be able to use them to read all those antique books!

BangingOn · 09/09/2018 18:15

Does he use a tablet or laptop? A tablet tray to use on his lap from his favourite chair?

Loopytiles · 09/09/2018 18:16

Let DH deal with it, it’s his father - a shirt sounds fine! My dad is a minimalist and likes to receive useful, simple clothing like shirts, with a gift receipt just in case.

sirmione16 · 09/09/2018 18:18

Is there someone he really likes that you could get an autographed something from?

PurpleTigerLove · 09/09/2018 18:34

I used to buy for my in laws until one year when Mil didn’t like the present i thought she would love . Never again . Now husband buys his dad a bottle of whiskey and a magazine subscription for his mother . I stay out of it .

Fstar · 09/09/2018 19:20

Food hamper of his fav things to eat? I always do this for my dad which he lkkes, otherwise he is so hard to buy for.

buckeejit · 09/09/2018 19:25

Absolutely an Alexa dot & smart plug so lamps can be attached to it. I still love saying Alexa-lamp on & hey presto, there is light!

BigBlueBubble · 09/09/2018 19:27

My DF is impossible to buy for. The only gift I’ve ever bought that he loved was a framed photo of my DC and a personalised mug with DC’s footprints and the word Grandad.

wheezing · 09/09/2018 20:14

Agreeing with others that this should not be your problem. Your DH can get his the shirt.

Alanamackree · 10/09/2018 07:11

Last year someone on mumsnet posted the opinion that men don’t want something new, but a new version of something that they have and love already,
It has transformed my approach to gift giving.

So if your dh is giving him a shirt just ensure that it’s the brand he likes with the right kind of cuffs and collar.

If he likes his chair, he might appreciate a lap blanket. You can get heated ones that you plug in (is there a convenient socket near his chair) or one with a high percentage of wool/cashmere.

Or heated slippers.

Or an over arm remote control organizer

BeaLola · 10/09/2018 09:40

How old is he & how does he spend his time during the day/weekends ?

If he goes to the local pub how about an engraved tankard they could keep there for him for his regular pint.

Is he into football or rugby - tickets for him & your DH to enjoy an afternoon together or how old is your DC(s) ? - something they could enjoy together
