Toy storage!

I know this is only loosely Christmas themed but after some advice. DS is 2 and I admit that I spoil him quite a lot when it comes to toys I think he will like. I recently bought a large ottoman for the living room that is overflowing - I know I need to do a cull soon for the charity shop. He also has two bookcase slings in the living room that are full.

My mum has bought him a train table for his birthday just before Christmas, that he will love but will have to be used as a coffee table when not in use (otherwise we just don't have room for it- my grandad is going to make a "lid" for it). It will at least take care of the storage problem for his wooden train tracks.

I think I can just about make room for everything he has for his birthday and Christmas (been super organised and finished his shopping already because the next few months are going to be a bit financially tight so wanted to make sure this was sorted before having to cut back).

But I was wondering what people do about sets of toys that come with various parts and keeping it all together? For example he will have a couple of Happyland sets. I could keep them in their boxes but they will quickly get damaged. If they get put in the Toy box, the various parts all get separated and then won't get played with. I could buy plastic storage boxes for each set of toys that needs to stay together but it just seems so wasteful.

Has anyone else managed any great solutions to keeping everything together? Is there something really obvious that I'm missing? We have a reasonably large living room but all the wall space is now taken up and I don't really want stacks of toys in the middle of the room. I'm also a minimalist which goes against my urges to buy DS everything- which means everything has to be put back in the evening so DH and I have a clear tidy space to relax in.

Our ds's toys go along the back wall and in the bay window. I hate seeing children's toys in boxes personally

PurpleMac We had a brilliant Happyland storage box when the DDs were little. It was a playmat for the figures and the buildings etc with things like a pond, a road, parking spaces etc on it, then it zipped up into a box. You just moved all the people, cars etc into the middle of the mat then zipped up the sides and put the lid on.

Just had a look and it was this:

Kallax storage from Ikea is great. I had happy land in a couple of the solid baskets that slot in to that

I suggest good storage in his bedroom (we have kallax 4x2 on its side for dd so she can access everything and Rotate toys downstairs for a couple of weeks.

So the happyland would live in a box in the toy box? We have "really useful" boxes that stack and tuck in a corner oron a bookcase.

We have Kallax shelving (ikea) which currently holds boxes of toys but will still be a nice and useful piece of furniture when the dc have outgrown their toys. Bigger sets that don’t fit in the boxes are displayed on top.

Another vote for Kallax here. I’ve given up keeping all the figures with their individual sets but at least they’re all in the same box. At the moment we have a duplo box, happyland box, musical instrument & puzzles box etc. Big pieces on top like pp

Kallax all the way. We have a few playmobil boxes, a superhero box, Lego box, Star Wars box... you get the idea.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 09/09/2018 09:06

We have this in the playroom and it holds so much. (Can also put stuff on top of it) and you can get plain boxes to go in it so it’s more neutral for a living room etc.

We have big squares of fabric for DC to play on. At the end the toys are scooped into the middle of the fabric and the corners are tied together to make a sort of bag. Then the bag goes in the cupboard.

its only for stuffed toys, but you can pop them into this bag, that then becomes a beanbag once sealed.
