Christmas Day afternoon tea

DS (6) has asked that instead of roast dinner on Christmas Day, can we have afternoon tea. We have Christmas here and apart from the 3 of us, it’s his 3 grandparents so we are all willing to indulge him. He doesn’t particularly like roast dinner.
I want to make it special and Christmassy though.
We’re thinking of doing a roast meat in the morning, either beef or pork, and serving hot sandwiches at 11.30 when they arrive.
Then about 3-4, have an afternoon tea- thinking smoked salmon/ egg mayo sandwiches, sausage rolls and decent pork pie, scones with jam and cream, Christmas cake, mince pies and maybe something chocolatey.
Anyone done this? Any other ideas?

We are not doing a roast this year either. We are also doing the roast meat to have hot sandwiches and then late afternoon a buffet style meal.

I do like the idea of afternoon tea with scones with cream and jam.

Some little french fancies, brownies or cookies in she shape of christmas tree? They are loads of fab ideas on pinterest. My niece loved fruit skewers

Nemesia · 04/09/2018 19:55

Yule log for the chocolate hit!

Whatififall · 04/09/2018 19:58

We always go for afternoon tea on Christmas Eve.
Usually get little pigs in blankets, turkey & stuffing sandwiches, there’s Christmas cake, mince pies, little Christmas pudding truffles (I think it’s a Nigella recipe), mini trifles in shot glasses. Love it.

What a really lovely idea!!

FayKnights · 04/09/2018 21:02

That’s such a lovely idea! Pinterest is your friend for ideas.

GreatWesternValkyrie · 05/09/2018 01:23

Lovely idea, I’ve done this a few times too. Some of my favourites (that take into account my lack of cooking skills!)

  • Mini Christmas puddings with cream or cream cheese frosting
  • Duck eggs for the egg mayo sandwiches to make them extra delicious.
  • Mini prawn cocktails in shot glasses, with a little splodge of (cheapish!) caviar is really nice. They’re always one of the first things mine make a beeline for!
  • Cocktail blinis with smoked salmon, cream cheese and lemon juice

Then cholesterol tablets for dessert 😁

My dc would love this. They aren't into roast dinners at all Sad. But would love a special Xmas high tea.

Ricekrispie22 · 05/09/2018 06:02

Ours always has to have mini stollen bites www.goodhousekeeping.co.uk/food/recipes/mini-stollen-bites
We also have mini yule logs but I don't make them, I just buy chocolate mini rolls and dust them with icing sugar.

What kind of thing does your Ds envisage or like?

KnotsInMay · 05/09/2018 06:57

I mean, he might have seen something that has given him a particular idea in his head.

And with the best will in tne world might be not happy with Brie and cranberry parcels and stuff he doesn’t like!

Allthepinkunicorns · 05/09/2018 07:08

We are doing an afternoon tea on Christmas day as we are going out for a meal on boxing day instead. I'm thinking of having turkey and cranberry sandwiches. Some Christmas cake or mince pies etc. Might buy some fancy cakes from somewhere. Might also get some pigs in blankets.

Shampooeeee · 05/09/2018 07:31

This sounds delicious! Does he like crab? Crackers with avocado and crab are delicious and very easy if you buy a pot of crab meat.
I once went to an afternoon tea where the egg mayo sandwiches came decorated with a quail’s egg. They looked lovely.
You could put dried cranberries and orange zest in your scones. I would go all out and get clotted cream!

EyeDrops · 05/09/2018 14:14

What a fabulous idea! Could you have some kind of winter-spiced scones? Turkey & cranberry sandwiches sound amazing too, and obviously Christmas pjs and Yule log! I really want to do this now too!!!

TheWoollybacksWife · 05/09/2018 14:19

The supermarkets have sold Christmas tree shaped crumpets for the last couple of years if he/you like them.

Lovemusic33 · 05/09/2018 14:35

Afternoon tea sounds perfect. I don’t do a roast Christmas Day, if we are home we tend to have a roast either Christmas Eve or Boxing Day as I don’t want to be cooking all day Christmas Day (and the kids don’t eat it), we tend to have a buffet type lunch instead.

ziggiestardust · 05/09/2018 14:40

You could get a Christmas tree cookie cutter and make the sandwiches into the shape of Christmas trees 🎄

I bet M&S will have LOADS of bite size bits and pieces; what a lovely idea!

NoWordForFluffy · 05/09/2018 17:18

We do all day buffet on Christmas Day too then I do a roast on Boxing Day.

I'd take a look at the usual suspects' Christmas offerings from October and see what lovely stuff you can get. It doesn't have to all cater to DS, though I'd get his favourite stuff for him. Adults can choose favourite bits too!

Bloodybridget · 05/09/2018 17:39

What a fantastic idea! And you won't have to make any fucking gravy!

Flipflop789 · 05/09/2018 17:51

I want this now! Yum. Sounds great (off to pinterest i go) Smile

FireflyGirl · 05/09/2018 18:39

Reading with interest. Might do this for MILs bday on 27th.

@Bloodybridget 'fucking gravy' Grin Grin

Chrisinthemorning · 07/09/2018 17:47

Thank you for all the replies and great ideas. It will definitely be things for grown ups as well as DS. He’s a picky eater so we’ll do him things we know he’ll like and see if he’ll try others.
I ran it by my parents- fine - and by MIL who thinks we are bonkers for thinking about Christmas in September Grin
Need to buy a cake stand!

I would love this for Christmas Day instead of the usual roast dinner. Can I come to yours

PearlandRubies194 · 09/09/2018 12:36

Op - thank you for this thread!

It’s just me and my daughter (6) this year and she doesn’t really enjoy a roast. So after reading your post and the fab comments, I’ll dedintely do a nice buffet instead!
