Christmas Markets in UK- where is a good one?

DH and I are planning to abandon our DC ( Xmas Shock - they will be 19 and 16.6 by Christmas so fair do) and go to a Christmas Market maybe mid Dec.

What I'm after though is :

Big city (we live in East London but we've been to the London ones over the years)
Some usual shops ( big shopping centre is ideal) to get some presents

Overnight stay (Travel Lodge type)

And .....if I can get out of driving , that's a bonus Xmas Grin

I know that Christmas Markets are in the towns and Big Shopping Centres are out of town .
If there was a trip that took us from London to the shops then had an overnight stay (or 2) and the markets the back home.
I don't really want to be stuck in traffic (I can do that at Lakeside) looking for a parking space. It would need to be a Fri/Sat/Sun

Not interested in Brussels or German markets btw .

So , any ideas ? TIA Xmas Grin

Bath is lovely but last time I went (2016) it closed on around the 12th December so don't leave it too last minute!

Living in Manchester city centre the market's get on my nerves so don't bother with them. All sell the same overpriced tat however manchester does have a lot of other things to see and do.
I've been to Birmingham and that's decent but I don't know what else there is to do. I've only been for drinks and its ok but nothing to write home about

York, Manchester has no atmosphere its grim.

I have done, Birmingham and Lincoln here and would never do either of them again, we know people who have been to Manchester and say it's good, we were there jsut after it finished so it was still half up and it looked fantastic. Going to that one this year.

supercalifragilistic2 · 27/08/2018 13:38

Lincoln has always been good and you can easily walk from the main shopping area to the part with the market.

You can easily get a train from London - Newark, then from Newark to Lincoln.

It does get very busy!!!! Market will be first week of December. Book a room early! Plenty of travel lodges/travel inns around the city, as well as smaller b&b places in the older part of the city (where the market is)

I've been to the Southbank, Hyde Park and Borough Market in London (they are all very pretty but its more to look at , though Borough Market has some nice foodie bits)
DD and I always go to Oxford St on the 23rd Dec which is lovely , fairly quiet for London , we mosey into the shops and buy some small things. I certainly wouldn't venture to Lakeside or Bluewater on the 23rd !

DH is going to Belgium in October so he'll buy chocolates Xmas Grin

I find Birmingham quite samey. It's big and good to wander down as it's through the town but I wouldn't make a special trip for it knowing what's there.

We are going to Vienna just as the xmas markets open, am hoping it will be far better than recent UK ones I've been to!
